Guests/Visitors: - Bob Britcher (Judge), Kerri-Anne Cook, Warren Lindsay and David Bryce President Ian Hinrichsen opened the meeting at 7.05pm and welcomed all members, guests and the Judge, Bob Britcher. Ian thanked our new newsletter editor for her first edition and discussed the recent Burleigh Heads outing from the previous Sunday which included night shooting of the drum circle and the fire twirlers. Club attendees managed to shoot interesting shots and luckily headed home by the time the rain arrived. N.B: please send some of your images (8 10) resized as for critique to outing@beaudesertcamera.org.au as soon as you are able. Shirley Baldwin arranged sample sizes of the new club shirts for members to try on during the night. Gwenda, a founding club member, wore the first club shirt displaying the club s motto Expose Yourself to Photography emblazoned on the back thanks for the reminder, Gwenda! Page 1 of 10

2 Camera equipment donated to the Club was on display, Ian reminded club members to the secretary if they were interested in tendering for any of the items. Mark Connop reported on Ace of Frames, a business which does framing and supplies matting located at Nerang: Ph or web site:- Critique images for May are Subject Minimalism and Open and are due on 30 April 2017 (see website for resizing etc.) Brent Randall advised club members on the planning for the Open Studios (our weekend is 20/21 May at The Centre ). Brent Encouraged those present to take a copy of the Open Studios Event booklet, discussing briefly the advertising involved, including posters, radio interviews etc. and explained what is going to happen and how we can help. This event is an opportunity for a few members (max. of 5) to exhibit about 10 to 12 samples of their framed work. Club member Sue Rodwell was very pleased to sell one of her nature photos at last year s display. Brent also promised to provide some more information regarding the opportunity the Canungra area is offering for people to have a pop-up studio in a shopfront in their town on the first weekend of June. This would be on an individual basis. Beaudesert Library requires photographers to take images of the Earth Day celebrations being held on 22 April 2017, Brent also advised that Llinos is the contact for the Library if you are interested. The Scenic Rim Regional Council is also launching a Photographic Competition for the cover of their new Guidebook. The winner will not only get the kudos of having their image on the cover but will also win $1,000.00!! Look out for the Secretary s for details of this great opportunity. Finally, for general business, we were reminded that Club dues need to be paid ASAP if you wish to maintain your status as a member, receive club information, compete in Critique and attend outings and workshops. Ian then introduced our judge for Critique, Bob Britcher, who is a member of Ipswich Photographic Society among others and a longstanding PSQ judge. Bob s wide-ranging interest in photography stems from his childhood in the bush around Inglewood and Goondiwindi. Bob stressed, as all our judges do, that his opinion is ive. He encouraged us to ask questions and to consider his advice on improving our photography, even if we decided to do our own thing anyway! He said that our critique images are competition images and as a judge, he must look for the pros and cons in each image. Bob then explained how he judged the images and here are some of his thoughts: The importance of shooting in RAW rather than Jpeg to retain as much digital information as possible The need to have a point of focus and to separate that from an obtrusive background by use of blurring, vignetting, cropping, toning down over-exposed areas etc. Always eliminate anything in your image which does not add to the story or whatever it is you are trying to achieve with the image Work your photo/ i.e. if possible always take more than one shot, use different standpoints, change perspective, get up high or down low and so on When colour becomes a distraction e.g. in a portrait, try converting to B & W so that you can concentrate on the face, the line etc. This often works for street photography as well. After supper (thanks to Jill as our new convenor), Bob judged our Enlargements, giving each individual print helpful comments. Comments included advice on cropping, composition and the rule of thirds, the need to allow sufficient space for the to move into, the need for every image to have a focus point, how to counter flat lighting with timing if possible, avoiding too much over-bright sun and diffusing the background. Bob emphasised technique in both the capture of the image and in the post-production process and in the use of our own creative interpretation in both areas. Bob Hall placed first in the Enlargements, with Mark Connop second and Yvonne Van der Horst third place. Bob gave us a brief look at some of his People photos taken over the years including some of the well-known personalities in the photographic world and some excellent character work. Unfortunately, because of the time, we Page 2 of 10

3 were unable to see as much of this as we might have liked. Ian presented Bob with a club mug as a remembrance of his visit and thanked him for his marathon effort. The meeting broke up around 10pm. 8 SUBJECT DEFINITIONS Subject Self Portrait Sport Minimalism Still Life Weather Family Life People Definition An image of yourself taken by yourself. You must be the person who pressed the shutter button. A photograph depicting any aspect of a sport. Keep it simple. Less is more. Minimal means few, the least, as little as possible. A minimalist photograph is one that conveys a scene using as few elements as necessary. Still Life images can be just about anything that does not move. The definition of a still life is an inanimate object but other s are loosely termed as still life as well. These include flowers, food, etc. They are life forms but they do not move. A photograph depicting some aspect or effect of weather - rain, storm, wind, lightning, cloud, sun etc. An image depicting some aspect of family life. The family need not be human. Photograph of people. This section includes candid photographs and formal portraits Nature photography depicts living, untamed animals and uncultivated plants in a natural habitat, geology and the wide diversity of natural phenomena, from insects to icebergs. Photographs of animals which are domesticated, caged or under any form of restraint, as well as photographs of cultivated plants are ineligible. Minimal evidence of humans is acceptable for nature s, such as barn owls or storks, adapting to an environment modified by humans, or natural forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves, reclaiming it. Nature Scape Open The original image must have been taken by the photographer, whatever photographic medium is used. manipulation or modification to the original image is limited to minor retouching of blemishes and must not alter the content of the original scene. After satisfying the above requirements, every effort should be made to use the highest level of artistic skill in all nature photographs. The APS definition of Nature is too complex to completely define here. Please go to the website for details: A landscape is a photograph of natural scenery with land and sky based elements displayed in a pictorial fashion. It may include evidence of man, people, animals, even part of the sea provided that none of these additional elements dominates the photograph. A seascape is a photograph of natural coastal scenery, a wave study, or a picture of the open sea, provided always that the sea is the centre of interest of the photograph. People, boats and man-made structures may be present as incidental to the photograph. that is treated pictorially, embodying the elements of good design, arrangement or composition, which reflects the personal interpretation of the photographer.
