2 A slideshow was then presented showing this month's critique images with audio comments from remote judge Robert Cullen followed by a Lightroom presentation of some of the images with Robert's suggested improvements. Supper by Tom Moon. Malcolm and Shirley then presented images of their recent Solomon Islands Kayak Tour followed by a short presentation by Cliff Pottinger showing why images need to have a resolution of pixels per inch when inserted into a PowerPoint Presentation. Some discussion then took place regarding the upcoming workshop on Saturday 16 th August and an outing to Waterhen Lake at Oxenford on Sunday 24 th August Critique Images This month's Critique Images were judged remotely by Robert Cullen. Robert has developed a great way of presenting his comments about the images with the use of audio. Along with a lot of work by Cliff, (thank you Cliff ) each image in the Slide Show was presented to us with an audio comment from Robert. I think everyone in the room really appreciated how this was done. This was a great way to overcome the difficulties that Judges must have in struggling to read their notes in the dark while making their comments regarding each photo. Robert had also taken the time to show in a separate presentation a few of his suggestions and how they would look/ improve some of the images. This was also very helpful, and great to see what his suggestions would actually look like regarding the photograph. SUBJECT Industrial 1st: Malcolm Baldwin Sparks Fly 2

One possible definition is this: Abstract Photography is photography which contains a design of patterns or shapes where the identity of a subject may not be easily evident. However, there is no standard, universally accepted definition of abstract photography. Actually, it isn't easy to create a clear-cut definition of an abstract concept. For the September critique, abstract photography will be defined as photography that: Does not represent the subject in a straightforward way. Communicates primarily through form, colour and shape rather than image detail. Many examples of abstract images can be found by doing a Google search. Here are a few links that lead to hundreds of examples

Water, Solitary and Architecture have been set subjects this year in our own intra-club competition and entries for the DPI competition will be chosen from these, but if you feel that you have any images that are worthy of inclusion please submit them for consideration. Also, please submit any good images that fit the subjects of People, Nature and Scapes. B and AB graded members may also submit images for inclusion in the Open section of the competition. Please submit your entries (1024 pixels max width x 768 pixels max 72 pixels per inch) to secretary@beaudesertcamera.com by Sunday 17th August. Some Events to Look out for: Brent has been very busy looking for events for us to go and photograph, so keep a keen eye out on your s over the next month or so regarding some of these events. POLO: The local Polo Club usually run competitions in the next coming month - Great for fast action and Horse type shots. HOT AIR BALLOONS: Again this is a great time for Hot Air Ballooning, usually 4am starts and they are going to let Brent know when 3 are going up at the same time - they love to have photographers come to shoot the early morning lift offs, so again watch out on your s. PROJECT TO PHOTOGRAPH THE TOWN: Enquires are being made about this project for the club to do, and it will be a great experience to be involved with. Just think that in 50yrs time it could be your photo that someone is looking at and saying, "Gee was that what it looked like back then! ". We know this type of comment is occurring now with us looking back on towns even only 50yrs ago and the shops, streets, places etc have changed so much during that time. This is a chance for the Club to be involved in the preservation of the NOW images of our Scenic Rim towns. - More to be advised about this project as it develops. Some Important points when submitting photos Cliff explained and demonstrated a very important point, that when we submit photographs that are to be used as a Power Point presentation, not only should we be considering the dimensions of 1024 pixels x 768 pixels but also the resolution of 72 to 100 Pixels per Inch (PPI). The term resolution would be more correctly called spatial resolution but let's not get too technical here. Due to the fact that our images are being digitally displayed via a computer and projector screen, if we have them set to the dimensions and resolution that match the computer and projector we will see a better quality of image on the screen. There was noticeable degradation in quality when a 300 or 600 PPI image was stretched to fill the screen compared to a 72 or 100 DPI image which filled the screen without stretching. So remember to send in your images at 1024 x 768 and at 72 PPI. (For image editing programmes you generally don't need to worry about resolution as the programme will re-sample the image and display it correctly, but PowerPoint is a dumb programme in this regard and will degrade the image if it has to be stretched to fill the screen.) 7

8 Kayaking Adventure in the Solomon Islands. In early June, Malcolm and Shirley Baldwin travelled to the Solomon Islands for a kayaking adventure. The weather was rainy and overcast, not very good for photography but great for kayaking, not too hot. The Islanders are a beautiful race, very welcoming and they thoroughly enjoyed our visit to their villages. They were keen to show us how they have lived and what they do now. The children were gorgeous, we had a tribe of young girls following us all over the village. The area would be a photographer's paradise for portraits. They enjoyed seeing themselves in the camera monitor. Our base was at Uepi Island Resort, which is a Mecca for divers. The water was warm, crystal clear and a fantastic colour. Marova Lagoon and the surrounding islands, which we kayaked in was pristine. We both thoroughly enjoyed this trip. Unfortunately, we were unable to get extra days at Uepi Resort before coming home (the resort is booked 12 months in advance). Looking forward to the next holiday. Malcolm and Shirley Malcolm and Shirley used a GoPro Camera, and Waterproof Olympus point and shoot and a Leica camera during this trip. The photos they took are great and the slide show showed some great shots even using these types of cameras. It really showed that it is not the camera that needs to be great but the photographer to see the scene. Some of the photos from Malcolm and Shirley's recent trip. 8

9 In the following article and in articles to come, I will be featuring a profile about each and every person within the Club. So please start writing a little bit about yourself as well as sending me a few of your favourite photos of type of photography you particularly like to take. I have commenced with our current President Malcolm Baldwin. Ian Henrichsen, our past President has promised me something on himself for the next newsletter. But then I will need your contributions. (Thank you Malcolm and Ian) Please send to me via ailsa@st.net.au A Little bit about Malcolm Baldwin. Beaudesert has been home, born and attended school here. Started work at 15 as an apprentice carpenter and still working for the same building firm 46 years later, now as a draftsman. Don t want to talk about work. My passions are my wife and two daughters (in that order) and anything out there. (Skydiving, running marathons, kayaking, snorkelling, skiing, cycling) For relaxation, fishing, caravanning, camping and photography. My first camera was a Canon AE-1 Program that I still have. It was bought when the kids were babies and I didn t move the dial from Program. I joined the Camera Club 7 years ago and purchased a Leica V-Lux1, which I used on our last kayaking trip to the Solomon Islands. (Was afraid the bigger camera may have gone into the water). Also have a Nikon D300, with a mixture of lenses and a Go Pro. I enjoy the different challenges that photography brings. Learning how to use your camera to get the best possible results. My passion is Birds in Flight. I enjoy helping others to understand their cameras and helping them take great photos. I m looking forward to retirement to have more time for my photography and other pursuits. ONLY 4 YEARS TO GO!! The photos included were taken at Waterhen Lake, Oxenford 9

10 Our Guest Speaker for August: Earle Bridger Earle began his photojournalism/ teaching career with ten years at the Brisbane daily The Courier Mail newspaper ( ).
