2 PRESIDENT'S REPORT May 2012 The enthusiasm our guest judge this month, John Lomas, has for photography was abundantly evident as he spoke at Tuesday evening's meeting. He has changed his particular area of interest over the years as a means of refreshing his photography. Also he enjoys taking a number of photos in a series and he has the patience to remain at a 'good' spot to await the coming together of all the elements resulting in the shot he is seeking. The Club's early a.m. outing to Kooralbyn provided the opportunity for some atmospheric shots. Our next event will be at the other end of the day's cycle with an After Dark shoot in Beaudesert. Final details will be ed out closer to the date. Congratulations to those who topped the points in May's Critique. Enlargements at the June meeting will give members the opportunity to shine before our next digital critique. Although it is a thrill to win, critique should also be used to gauge your personal improvement from month to month. If you're unable to get away for that big trip, which some of our members are doing at the moment, consider some concentrated exposure to photography at the PSQ Convention over the June long weekend. There aren't many ideas coming to mind for the topic 'Aged' so I may be forced to consider a selfportrait. Ian Tony Spies Ian Hinrichsen Page 2

The rest of us hope to gain from these excursions by being entertained by photographic travelogues on their return. Ian welcomed everybody including a first time visitor, Paul. Ian described the Kooralbyn early morning shoot on the preceding Saturday for the benefit of the late risers or those who had been unable to attend for bona fide reasons. (See elsewhere in the newsletter for a full report). Details of the 'After Dark (No Flash)' workshop were given out. Members are to meet at 4.30 pm at the Beaudesert Museum on Saturday June 16th. A reminder will be sent around and members are requested to notify a committee member that they will be attending so we can gauge numbers for the Sausage Sizzle. N.B. The June 26th meeting is an Enlargement night. Shirley who in her spare time doubles as PSQ Secretary told us of all the interesting speakers and workshops that would be taking place at the PSQ Convention on the June long weekend. Anyone who wants more details should contact Shirley or access the PSQ website for attendees. Our Critique Judge for the evening was John Lomas who has visited our Club before and has also judged at the Beaudesert Show. John had prepared an Information Sheet which he handed out. (He was good enough to allow us to use this in our Newsletter). The Critique Topic was 'Social Documentary' which John said had the sub-section of 'Photojournalism'. He emphasised that such a photo should have "emotional impact" although it doesn't necessarily have to include a person(s). He showed us a copy of the famous image 'Migrant Mother' by Dorothea Lange as an example. His motto is 'When in doubt, leave it out' stressing that we should be prepared to crop aggressively. Other tips included the importance of having a focal point or centre of interest, the use of colours to create perceptions and mood, and also the variation of the image-taker's viewpoint. Don't take every shot standing at eye level. After the Critique, supper was served and then John showed us some examples of his recent and not-sorecent work. He is a 'people' photographer, likes to shoot glamour portraits and is a big fan of Black and White. He showed us his Favourite 10 Images from his own portfolio over a long period in photography. In his opinion, images always transcend language: a viewer can understand what is being 'said' in a picture even if they cannot speak the language of the maker. Finally, he concluded with saying that a photographer should never grow stale in his or her photography by always taking the same sort of photos. Continue to challenge ourselves by trying new approaches e.g. using a theme (such as 'homage to Audrey Hepburn' in Breakfast at Tiffany's) and trying to shoot in this style. 5 Beaudesert Judging May 2012 Thank you for allowing me to judge your images. I can only give you my opinion. There will be as many opinions as there are people at this club tonight. And all opinions are equally valid. Judging art is subjective. Unlike sport, we can t use a tape measure or a stop watch to see who has jumped the highest or swum the fastest. It all comes down to opinion. Some Points on Photography Some people have a high visual IQ. They are good at the recognition of subject matter. Be prepared to crop aggressively but also maintain a sense of space. It is often a case of when in doubt, leave it out Selective focus is a powerful way to isolate a subject. A centre of interest is a big plus. In most instances, people in a picture automatically become a centre of interest. Colours can add feeling and depth. Learn about hot advancing colours and cold receding colours. Three key variables for a picture are viewpoint, lens and lighting. Use all three to maximum advantage. We basically put rectangles around the world as photographers. Think about whether an image is better as a vertical or a horizontal. On the craft of photography if something is obviously wrong with an image, then that will be a hurdle that stops the viewer from exploring the art of the image. Look for lines and implied lines. Diagonals are strong lines for impact. Dynamic subject matter (things that move) is more demanding than static subject matter (things that don t move). In the main, people are dynamic subject matter. There are lots of compositional rules rules of thirds, dead centre is dead wrong, horizon line divide etc in general, they work. For a sense of depth, think of a picture as foreground, midground, background. Leading lines between them can make a picture. See if you can read a picture under the headings of describe, analyse and interpret. A good picture will often have a strong interpretation layer to it. Learn as much about post production digital manipulation as you can. It is now a key part of the craft. We tend to read pictures from left to right. Be prepared to flip an image. For those without , hard copy images or images on CD or USB are to be handed in at the due meeting. Hard copy images will be scanned by the judging co-ordinator. Enlargements: March / June / September (Impact Judging at club meeting). November (Submit prints at October meeting for Photo of the Year ). Enlargement rules: Maximum size 20 x16 including matting or equivalent surface area for different formats (320 sq. ins). Critique requirements: for Subject, Open and Enlargements categories Any adjustment is allowed except CLONING - removal or addition of elements is not allowed.
