At April s meeting I issued the first President s Challenge - April for June so get shooting. Have fun. We also have an update for PSQ NQ/CQ Interclub Competition What s happening this month. The Committee has released the May - Member Photo Shoot Outing Check out the details. I look forward to seeing you there. 2 Overview of Last Meeting Presentation by Jenny Gardiner Jenny is a local artist who has had an interesting career from Window Dresser, making and designing Wedding Dresses which spiked her interest in drawing. Jenny has also worked in Distance Education and in schools in the Mackay district. Jenny s discussion centered around focal point, positive & negative space as well as composition. A few points from her talk as follows: Close your eyes, open them, the first thing you see is the focal point Don t be afraid to cut objects in half Look at objects from a different angle If you re going to manipulate a photo make sure the light is right Crop your image to emphasise the focal point Jenny s talk was informative and I am sure everyone gained something from it. Canon Collective in Mackay Roundup by Tanya Staines. In April a few club members were lucky enough to have the time to be able to attend photographic outings organised by Mackay Instagramers through Canon Collective. We had three fun filled days travelling around Mackay, our options were: Various animals and sunset at Freckle Farm, sunrise at Cape HIllsborough, Black & White challenge at Old Station Teahouse, of course sunset at the Lone Tree Shoal Point was included. A couple of very keen members (Donna, Tracey & Wendy) made it for the sunrise shoot at Lamberts Beach on the Thursday morning. We then had an intensive Lightroom/Photoshop workshop. Greg Sullavan from Canon was a wealth of knowledge and was happy to share and answer any question. He also gave us a couple of settings to try to give you different end results for your images. For me personally I gained some valuable knowledge, was able to ask dumb questions and fix a few settings on my camera, I also had an enjoyable three days with great company. 3 2016 Club Awards The 2016 Club Awards were presented These Awards are for Points Earned. The Award doesn t necessary recognise the best image but is a combination of quantity entered plus level scored for the image. Wendy Coad with Me and My Mates displayed at the Botanic Gardens Lagoon Gallery through December/January earlier this year. Along with the trophy, Wendy was later presented with a Voucher to create her first Memento photo book. Now the pressure s on for her to complete it and show us the results! 5 President s Challenge - April for June Our first challenge has been issued.. The APRIL challenge is to deliver an image for Wednesday 21 June The World from a Baby s perspective Be the baby. What do you see? Depends where you are or what your family are doing. Get the picture!! (pardon the pun). Have some fun. Portraits of babies will not be accepted. The Rules: All images must be taken during the time scope of the challenge. Maximum number of photos to be submitted by each member is 2. Any manipulation or enhancement in post processing is acceptable. Print Only - size A4 (no digital). All photos will be displayed from the start of the meeting giving us all a chance to view the entries. Judging will be by popular vote - Top 3-1st, 2nd & 3rd. Voting will take place after our speaker / information presentation. If time allows, winners to inform members how they achieved the results (f/stop, ISO, Shutter Speed, Processing). Tell us a story, make us laugh. Give us something special. Remember, all the rules of photography are a guide only. Sometimes you need to break the rules to get the result you re after. May - Member Photo Shoot Outing Club Outing: Sat. 13th May Set your alarms, we're heading to the beach for a sunrise shoot. Where: Dolphin Heads, North end of Admiral Drive (Mud map below) When: Meet at 5:15am at the carpark northern end of Admiral Drive then head to the beach or the point to get yourself set up. First light is 6:02am with sunrise at 6:25am If you're coming you must confirm by Friday, 12th May. We need to know the numbers. Wouldn t want to leave you behind in the dark. 6 May - Meeting- What s On May Meeting is Wednesday, 17th Venue: Community Meeting Room, Gordon White Library, Phillip Street, Mt Pleasant Time: 6:45pm for 7pm start Competition Night This is a competition/judging night so we hope you ve had your camera out taking same amazing photos. We re all looking forward to seeing them. Print or digital format so there s no stopping you. Preparations for A Night with a Difference Don t forget to bring along a USB so that we can give you the RAW files 1x Landscape and 1x Portrait. This is a photo editing exercise. There is no right or wrong way to do it. It s your interpretation of the images. Take it as far as you want with your develop/editing software ie: Lightroom, Adobe Raw, Photos, Capture, NIK collection etc. You can work on one or both images, it s up to you. You have a month to work on the images. Save your edited images back to the usb as jpgs and bring them to the June Information Night for viewing and critique. Don t be scared to give it a go, so bring that USB Exhibition - Personality Captured This topic is completely open to your interpretation. Get your creative hats on!! Start shooting early and capture that great shot. Feel free to bring any possible images to our information club meetings to get critique/feedback to develop your shot. The definition of personality may help with your image: personality pəːsəˈnalɪti/ noun: personality ; plural noun: personalities The combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual s distinctive character. The following link may also help with your photo: Capturing Personality in a Photo Personality isn t limited to people. An individual can be an animal or buildings with character etc. Club Website & Facebook Both the Website and Facebook page have been going through a remodel and update phase. This process will be continuous to keep the sites fresh. Please everyone take the time to regularly search for and visit both and Like some items on the Facebook page. Maximum Print size: A4 Portraits An image of a person/group of people or animal /group of animals that displays expression, personality and mood of the subject. The focus should be the face or the entire body and the background may be included to highlight a relationship with an environment or an object. (Not an image that simply happens to contain people/animals.) Maximum Print size: A4 Enhance It Any post processing allowed. Maximum Print size: A4. For Arts Sake Fine art is the production of images to fulfil the creative vision of the photographer. It may be produced for sale or display rather than in response to a commercial commission. May include other media and can use any manipulation. Any size. (Maximum Print size: A4 preferred for judging) Pure Talent This image is to be a single exposure taken in camera as a jpeg file and may be cropped or straightened only. No cloning, enhancing colours etc. The aim is to encourage the photographer to get the best in camera image possible. Include camera settings on the back ie. 8 Competition Guidelines All the Competition Categories are run each competition night - there is no fixed subject for competitions. Each member will be able to enter a maximum of 6 images in total. Each member may enter a maximum of 3 images per category. Images must have been taken within the previous 6 months. Images must have been taken by the member entering the image. Member must be financial to enter competitions. Images may be submitted as a print or as a digital file. ( As every effort is made to calibrate the computer screen and the projector to get the colours correct, members will need to realise that the digital file may not view the same as their home computer screens are not calibrated. It is at the member s discretion whether they submit a print or digital file). Printed Images may be up to A4 size, except For Art s Sake which may be any size. Points Earned: Each image entered earns you 1 point towards the annual Club Awards. Plus, Gold = 3 points, Silver = 2 points, Bronze = 1 point. Photo of the Month in each comp category earns an extra 1 point. (So, the more you enter the more chance you have of becoming an award winner). Print Size A4 Print - maximum paper size A4. If printing 1:1, panorama or format size, print to A4 photographic paper, do not trim paper. Digital Images supplied in digital format to be sized as follows and supplied on usb to the Projection Co-ordinator before the start of the meeting: Naming your Images: yourname_category_imagename i.e. joeblogs_enhanceit_prettyflower Note: by providing your images in digital format, you automatically agree that the Club can share your images on the Club s website, social media and Newsletter. 9 EXTERNAL COMPETITIONS PSQ NQ/CQ Interclub Competition Update : This month we submitted our 10 entries for the interclub competition. The Category being Black & White. The images from the competing clubs have now been uploaded and are viewable by following the link PSQ NQ-CQ Entries - B&W - April Just double click on the first photo and then you can view the full size image. A total of 70 photos have been entered to the competition. Judging should be finalised by the end of May. We eagerly await the results and will keep you posted. Brisbane Exhibition (EKKA) Here s a link to the Ekka 2017 Photography Schedule and Ekka 2017 Entry Form Entries close 31st May Post Processing & Creating Lightroom Presets Here s a YouTube clip that may help you with the upcoming A Night with a Difference as well as developing your own presets. How to get that modern "Film" look in Lightroom with Trey Cockrum (video runs for 10mins) Check out this video and see how easy it can be to create a look using Lightroom. Don't forget you can save 'the look' as your own preset. How to save your develop settings as a preset... LHS panel click + on Presets Bar and you'll get the box shown opposite. Name it and it will automatically save into a 'User Preset' Folder. Ready for you to be able to use on any photo at anytime. Magic!!! Get Ignited, Get Excited, Get out there and Try It!!!
