2 PRESIDENT'S REPORT April 2012 How difficult photography would be, if all those "you beaut" items Steve Longton from Cameras-Online had to show us on Tuesday were essential. Photography certainly does have its frustrating moments, so why not have a few goodies to ease the way? Cliff has been engrossed in re-vamping the Club's website. His quick tour on Tuesday was well received by all present and as of Friday 27th, the site is up and running. The panorama on the Home Page is taken from Mt Gipps (Lions' Road) looking north towards Beaudesert with Mt Chinghee just left-of-centre. The Members' galleries are still under construction and Cliff is asking for up to 20 images from everybody - your best/favourite ones, not necessarily images that have been in 'Critique'. A number of workshops have been set for the coming months; see the complete details elsewhere in the Newsletter. Workshops form a large part of the PSQ convention over the June long weekend. They will also allow photographers' access to presenters who are unlikely to be readily available to our Club other than at the Convention. An just circulated to our members gives detailed information. PSQ is offering its affiliated clubs the opportunity to display up to 20 prints from club members, matted, in Enlargement size, 10 colour and 10 monochrome at the Convention. If you would like to have one or two of your prints considered, please bring them along to the May meeting so that we can have as wide a range as possible to choose from to represent the Club. Finally, we would appreciate hearing from volunteers to provide supper for monthly meetings from May to November. The Club reimburses providers $ Contact the Secretary if you can assist. Hope to see you early a.m. at Kooralbyn, Ian Page 2
3 Red Belly black snake Well done Rosemarie and Michael What Judges look for in a Photograph by John Staib. Obviously this may vary with different types of photographs e.g. Landscape, Nature, People, Pictorial, Social Documentary or some specific subject. Impact: The Wow! factor. Often achieved by bright colours, size of the main subject in the frame, something unexpected, strong emotional appeal, humour, strong composition etc. Composition: The arrangement of the parts of a photograph, e.g. Rule of Thirds, leading lines, curves, S curves, dominant foreground. Mood or Feeling: can be cheerful [bright, airy or sunny]; brooding or threatening [dark and gloomy]. Sometimes achieved by varying exposure from the norm. Story Telling Effect: Very important in Nature and Social Documentary photography. Technical Quality: Sharpness, Depth of Field, Appropriate Exposure. Overall Appeal: Really a Combination of all the above which judges use to evaluate a photograph. Page 3
4 Present:-Ian Hinrichsen, Rosemary Hinrichsen, Bob Hall, John Staib, Cliff Pottinger, Peter Hill, Michael Ashburner, Rosemarie Worthington, Shirley Baldwin, Malcolm Baldwin, Tony Spies, Carol Rustichelli, Lawrie Sims, Trish Jurd, Barbara Johnson, Ailsa Corlett, Bill Corlett, Gary Moloney. Apologies:-Bruce Williams, Garry Appleby Visitors:- Steve Longton (Cameras Online) Club Business: - The meeting commenced at 7.05 pm with Ian welcoming all present. He announced an early morning shoot to be held on Saturday 19th May, at Kooralbyn, and a night shoot at Beaudesert on Saturday 16th June. John Staib has been in touch with Alan Beswick to organize a Flash Photography workshop in August or September. Ian also advised a clarification to competition rules. For some time, entries from the digital critique may be entered in the enlargement competition. The Committee has decided that the reverse should also be allowable, i.e. entry of enlargement images (digital copy) in the critique. This recognizes that there are two separate competitions - Photograph of the Year (enlargements), and Photographer of the Year (digitally projected critique images). Gary Moloney announced that the Beaudesert Show is to be held on 7 and 8 September. There is to be a new category in the Photographic section, Framed Prints. Minimum size is 10 x 8, with any subject allowed. Certificates will be awarded to winners, with no monetary prize. There will be the opportunity for entrants to make these prints available for sale. Ian then introduced our guest, Steve Longton. Steve is the operator of Cameras Online, a Redlands based online photographic retailer. He has a 35 year background in Photography, with some early training as a photographer with The Age sports photography section. Following extensive travel in his field of Engineering, he saw an opportunity to offer less expensive overseas products to the Australian market. He stressed that he is not a grey importer, but a registered Australian Online Retail Entity, with competitive prices. Steve works part-time as a wedding photographer, and also conducts classes. Steve presented an informative and enthusiastic demonstration of several equipment lines: Tripods, Tripod Heads, Flashguns, and many useful accessories. Of particular interest were several diffusers which attach to flashes (both built-in and external), an LED ring light for macro photography, flexible clamps, and a loupe attachment for clear viewing of a camera s LCD display, with 4 times magnification. Following the demonstration, we had the opportunity during the supper break to inspect and try out all of the items demonstrated. As Camera Club members, Steve advised that we are eligible for free delivery of any items ordered from Cameras Online. Following supper, provided by Shirley and Malcolm Baldwin, our Webmaster, Cliff Pottinger demonstrated the Club s newly developed website to members. Cliff has put considerable effort into the new site, and it was well received. He has requested that Members send him their favourite images (up to 20) for inclusion in the Galleries page. This should be on a CD, memory stick or . He will resize appropriately. Cliff also sought panoramic images for the page heading, to be of any suitable image illustrating the Scenic Rim. Such images could be rotated from time to time, and should measure 900 x 150 pixels. Contact Cliff for further details.the meeting closed at 9 pm. Digital Art. If you have not put an entry into the Digital Art section before. Here are some ideas that may help. Digital Art is an extension of conventional photography. Its purpose being to stimulate creative thoughts and encourage experimentation with new ideas. The original photo may or may not have a high degree of recognizable manipulation. Some ideas to get started: Use your computer and photo software to Combine two images, then experiment with different blending modes, opacity or Experiment with different filters. Photograph some interesting textures like sandstone, tree bark and blend them with another image. If you are not using a computer there are many other ways of being creative, for example: Using in-camera effects such as slow shutter speeds, multiple exposures, moving the camera while exposing the image. Cutting and pasting of printed images to make collages and montages. Painting on prints, hand colouring etc. Page 4
