President Malcolm Baldwin opened the meeting by welcoming members and visitors. He then congratulated those members whose prints were chosen in the recent Beaudesert Hospital Photography Competition. Megan Kenny, who had been unable to attend the presentations at the hospital was handed her certificate by Malcolm. Members were reminded of the upcoming End of Year Dinner and Awards Function to be held on 7 December at Beaudesert RSL. Members were advised that the committee had been having discussions regarding Grading for the coming year. Malcolm also congratulated members on the quantity of images submitted for critique with many members submitting the maximum 24 images plus 12 Altered Reality images. About 80% of members submitted 20 images or more. The Photo of the Year Prints have been judged and returned to the club and results will be revealed at the End of Year Function. 1
The local Hot Air Balloon company has offered the club a prize which can be raffled to raise funds. The prize is a free flight plus breakfast for two people. In order to receive the prize the club will provide photographers on Fri, Sat and Sun mornings to take photographs to be used as publicity shots. Committee members will trial the system, which involves being telephoned at 4.30am and advised of where to meet for the shoot and possibly being offered a flight on the spur of the moment. Malcolm then introduced our judge for the night, Glenn Rossiter from Peninsula Camera Club. Glenn provided us with a very detailed and valuable commentary on most of the night's images. Supper was provided by the committee. Glenn Rossiter then presented two A/V's displaying all aspects of his photographic work, both of which were well received by members. Pacific Cruiser Mark Connop then provided a slideshow of some of his recent tour images. Guest Speaker - Glenn Rossiter Glenn not only did the Critique for this month's images, of which the subject "Bubbles", proved to be quite a challenging subject to most of us, but he also gave a very informative critique of the images and ideas on how little improvements would make them into stunning photos. Glenn also presented two Audio Visuals. One showing just what can be achieved using some simple but very beautiful shots of the Rainforest as well as what can be achieved using some Photoshop techniques to create a photo into an Altered Reality or Creative Photograph. Both presentations were very powerful and wonderful to watch and listen to. Some interesting pointers - Don't make your borders too wide or too white, more effective if you use a darker colour from within the photo to give contrast. Use Adjustment Layers from Photoshop to control black or white highlights. The Smart Sharp in Photoshop is the most effective and least damaging of the sharping tools to use. Remember "Simplicity" is the major element of shots. Portrait Workshop 9th November Many thanks to Barry for his time, expertise and patience in running the Portrait Workshop. All that attended gained a great insight into the power of light, and how to make the most of using the natural aspects of a room, how to position a model and remember to "keep them talking" so that they were comfortable and relaxed while you took the shots. Bob and Noreen were wonderful models for us all, and I hope they like the photos that we took of them. Welcome to our Visitor. Jason Dodge, came along to our meeting this week. Jason has had a camera for a little while but only just starting to learn of its functions and what he can do with it. Jason we look forward to seeing you at the meetings and workshops next year, as well as some of the photos you have been taking with your camera and learning how it all works. Don't forget we have a great library which has all sorts of books in it to help with the basic functions of cameras and composition. 2
Beaudesert Hospital Competition Results. The Beaudesert Hospital has recently refurbished their Patient's TV/Dining room and a number of Palliative Care rooms. To help spruce up these rooms even more so the Hospital had run an open competition seeking submissions from photographers, with the main criteria being that the images were of the Scenic Rim area, and a limit of only two images per photographer. The makers of the selected images were then requested to provide a Hi-Res file of their selected image(s) for professional printing onto canvas and subsequent hanging in the Hospital rooms. A number of the Club's membership were successful in getting one each of their images selected, except for Mark Connop, who had BOTH images selected! Well done, Mark! The successful contributors were Rosemary Hinrichsen, Shirley Baldwin, Megan Kenny, Mark Connop, John Staib, Tony Spies, and Jennifer Johnson from Boonah's U3A club. A Morning Tea was held at the Beaudesert Hospital on Mon 17th Nov to thank the successful photographers and to display the printed works, as well as to thank a number of people from other organisations that were involved in the refurbishment. A slideshow of the presentation can be seen here. Unfortunately, Megan was unable to attend the event and we didn't get a shot of Mark with either of his images. Images are courtesy of Ian Hinrichsen. 3

Bob Hall - One of our many travelled members. When I was about ten, my Dad gave my sister and me a camera each- a great little Felica. It used 120 rollfilm, and had a choice of two apertures and three shutter speeds. Soon, he introduced me to film processing and contact printing, all in the bathroom after dark, with blankets to help keep the light out. With no safelight at that stage, I soon learned to find my way in the dark. Bob in 1960 We can see where Bob got his photography as well as travel bug from - his Dad I progressed to a second hand Praktica SLR as a teenager, and saved to purchase a new Pentax Spotmatic SLR state of the art in 1967! This served me well for many years. Around this time, with a good friend, I developed an interest in motor racing meetings, and enjoyed shooting lots of cars in various precarious positions. I would process and print my shots in a small darkroom that I built at home. I still have all of my 35mm negatives from 1965 to 1975, systematically filed away. This paid off when recently I retrieved some negatives from 1970, to produce a great print as a gift for some friends 40 th wedding anniversary. My photography was put into the background somewhat with family and business commitments, as I had less time to devote to photography apart from family and holiday snapshots. We embarked on some camping trips from about 2000, and I determined that I would keep a photographic record. My old Pentax kit was still up to it, but I entered the digital age in 2003 with a Canon 300D kit which I still have today. When I retired in 2005, we went travelling around Australia, and on our first visit to Broome in 2006, I met Nigel Gaunt, a local photographer and gallery owner, whose camera equipment included a newly released Nikon D200 with a (then) revolutionary wide range lens. This influenced me to jump ships to Nikon. Nigel has been a great mentor, and I have spent a lot of time with him on subsequent trips to the west. I joined Beaudesert Camera Club towards the end of 2008, after hearing lots of good things from Rosemary and Ian Hinrichsen. I thought that things were pretty good when, at my first meeting, I won that night s enlargement competition! The friendships I have made at the Club have been great, and I certainly feel that my photography has improved over these last six years- certainly my enthusiasm has. I have been fortunate to win Photograph of the Year and Photographer of the Year awards within the Club in recent years. My main photographic interest has always been Landscape and Travel Photography, but with encouragement from Club members and participation in Club events, I have ventured into Macro and Nature photography, and just recently, Portraits. I really enjoy the processing side of photography, no doubt due to my wet finger experience, but nowadays it is strictly computer based. I firmly believe that photography is a two-step process- image capture and image processing. It is just done differently now. I have spent several years working with and trying to master Photoshop, and more recently have been using Lightroom. Over the last few years, I have been really fortunate to participate in several dedicated photographic tours and workshops. Destinations have included Karijini National Park and Dampier Peninsula in WA, the wild 7
west coast of Tasmania, and recently trips to Iceland and Cambodia. Each year, Lyn and I participate in Camp Creative, a summer school for arts and crafts held in Bellingen, Northern NSW. Over the years there I have participated in several short photographic courses which have been great fun and helped provide a few more skills. All of these experiences have helped me to maintain my interest in photography, and to sharpen that continuing quest for the perfect composition, perfect exposure and perfect print. No doubt these will keep me busy for years to come. Bob Hall Lakeside 1968 Photo of the year 2011 David Helfgott Thank you Bob for your article about how you got into photography, it is great to read and learn about our members and their inspirations. And I look forward to getting more articles from our members. 8

To start the year we have Street Photography (submit by 31 December) - please don't just take a shot of a street - a definition appears below: Street photography is photography that features the human condition within public places and does not necessitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment. The subject of the photograph might be absent of people and can be an object or environment where the image projects a decidedly human character in facsimile or aesthetic. The origin of the term 'Street' refers to a time rather than a place, a time when women achieved greater freedom, when workers were rewarded with leisure time and when society left the privacy of their sitting rooms, people engaged with each other and their surroundings more publicly and therein the opportunity for the photographer. There are lots of sites on the internet with examples and tips on how to go about it. Here are a few: Please print out Page 9 as it shows all the Subjects for the year and also put it into a spot you can see and look at. This way you will be reminded of what you need to submit for critique, and can also tick off the subjects/ photos you have already done.. The Committee have decided to accept paid advertisements in our newsletter. If you would like to advertise in the future newsletter or know of anyone who would like to place an advert - relating to photography - these are the rates: Advertising in Newsletter Free to financial members. Rate for other advertisers: o o Half page: $50/year. $30/6 months. $20/3 months. $10/1 month. Quarter Page: $40/year. $25/6 months. $15/3 months. $8/1 month.
