3 Hello to all, It was a very busy and rather late night last meeting but we all enjoyed listening to our guest speaker/judge, Gordon Dean, and having a laugh with him as he was very entertaining and interesting. He would have been rather late getting home that night but he definitely enjoyed his supper, a delicious and comprehensive spread put on by Trish Jurd. Thanks heaps Trish as we all tucked in. It s Cindy s turn for supper next meeting and the bar has been set fairly high now. We ve had good reports from our display of last year s Photo of the Year up at Photo Continental. It has created a lot of interest in our club which is great and we now have two new members thanks to our display, Bill and Ailsa Corbutt, who came along to our meeting and also joined up. A warm welcome to Bill and Ailsa. On Saturday 4 th April we took down our display down from Photo Continental and on day 7 th it was put up at The Centre, Beaudesert. There has been lots of paperwork involved in exhibiting at The Centre and thanks for sending in your image valuations as this was an extra request from the Arts and Cultural Officer not mentioned in the paperwork. Hopefully this is all finalised. Come along and have a look at our display now it s a bit closer to home. Our club s entry to the Glennie Nature Interclub Exhibition in the U.S. did very well for our first effort at international competition. The standard of entries was absolutely amazing and, with 95 clubs from Canada, U.S.A, U.K. New Zealand and Australia entering images, we gained the same number of winning points as the Brisbane Camera Group, which I think is a great effort. The winning club gained 231 points and our club gained 192. The winning Wildlife Image was of a mother duck feeding her young and the Best in Show was an Osprey with a sole in its talons. I think we need long lenses like the one Gordon Dean used for some of his images, a Canon 500mm. Wouldn t that be great! The Nature Seminar held at Photo Continental on Sunday 22 nd March was very well received and Rosemary and Ian really enjoyed the day. Plans are under way for a portraiture seminar next so more details will be passed on when they come to hand. Friday 12 th June is Barry s book launch at The Centre for the book he and Ailsa Rolley have worked very hard to produce. It s titled They Gallop at Dawn" and covers the racing industry in the Beaudesert area, with photographs and anecdotes from many local identities. Come along and join us on the night at 6:30pm and we also need some volunteers to help out with various jobs at the event. Please let us know at next meeting if you can help. Maybe we ll have our new club shirts by then and would all look great wearing our shirts. I can t wait to open the book for a look. Sunday March 29 th was our excursion to the Maritime Museum at Southbank. A few of us arrived at Southbank a little early to visit the markets there then we all met on the Boardwalk and went to the Arbour View Cafes for a bite to eat. The bougainvillea looked a picture all along the Arbour. Colleen and Reg were already in town for an occasion the night before and joined us for lunch too. Ailsa and Bill, our new members, came along, as well as Rosemary and Ian, Laurie, myself and Mary with her family. Read the article in the newsletter about our great day out. As April is a busy month with Easter and Anzac Day, our Camera Secrets Workshop will now be in August but don t forget our Hunt and Shoot on Sunday 31 st May. Our Playing with Filters Workshop will be on Sunday 21 st June. In July we re having a Christmas In July lunch at Dugandan Pub at Boonah. Keep checking newsletters for information on these workshops and the Hunt and Shoot. Thank you Laurie for making us a new perpetual Shield for the winner of Photo of the Year. The old one has been filled with medallions for each year and we needed another. The new one is beautifully made out of red cedar and looks much more professionally created than the old one. Thanks heaps Laurie. April s critique subject is H2O, an easy subject but do something different so your image stands out from the rest. There are lots of possibilities with this subject. Looking forward to seeing you all when next we meet Barb 3
4 Minutes of Executive Meeting held on March at Beaudesert R.S.L. Club Present:- Maria Amrein, Barb Douglas, Colleen Brown, John Knight, Barry Cheeseman, Ian Hinrichsen, Rosemary Hinrichsen, and Rudi, (Maria's better half). Correspondence:- Membership fees received by post or hand were given to the Treasurer. The Marlborough Newsletter was received, as usual, with interest in the doings of our colleagues in NZ. (The President admits to using this newsletter as a mine of information for our members but claims to be scrupulous in acknowledging the source, so thanks to Marlborough folks). The Secretary has been overwhelmed this month with s from PSQ - results of surveys, notice of competitions, seminars etc. These were tabled and discussed or referred to the full meeting. A schedule was received for the Ipswich Show. Entry forms can be obtained from the website General Business:- The Committee discussed the selection of images and the entry fees for the Glennie competition and eventually agreed to another meeting to finalise this process on the following Saturday. With our Club's enlargements successfully on display at Photo Continental, we turned our attention to the logistics of the display at The Centre in Beaudesert. Colleen has been liaising with The Centre for the Exhibition entitled IMAGES TO IMPRESS: Exposure Unlimited. The photos will be on display from 15 April - 3 May 2009 but prior to this, there are several deadlines to meet and forms to be filled in. Members will have the opportunity to sell their works if they so wish. Works are to be delivered, labelled, and installed on Monday 6 and day 7 April ready for the Exhibition to open on Wed April 15. Refinement of our Workshop/Excursion Calendar continues as we continue to find dates which clash etc. April has just become too crowded so the Camera Secrets Workshop has been postponed till Saturday, 29 August. We also hope to have a 'Xmas in July' lunch, probably on Sunday 26/7/09 and are hoping our visit to the Japanese Gardens in Toowoomba will be able to take place on Sept 27. Watch the calendar for further developments! John Knight is working hard to organise workshops and excursions - please contact John if there is some topic you would like covered. Barry Cheeseman then took the floor to fill us in on developments and dates for his book launch which is to occur on Friday evening 12/6/09 at The Centre. Some help will be needed on this occasion and members will be asked to assist at the meeting. A number of expenses have cropped up in the lead-up to the publication e.g. liquor licence, catering for the night, purchase of an ISBN for the book, invitations, publicity, the necessity to supply various government departments with free copies (after all, the Government is putting up the grant) and an invitation to the Premier! The print run is 500 copies at a price of approx. $32.00, for 120 pages of fantastic photographs (this is Barry we're talking about) accompanied by scintillating text by Ailsa Rolley with stories of colourful racing identities and heroic horses. Barry thought it would be really good if club members could wear their new T-shirts for the launch. We'll see! There was so much to discuss and decide that our table was the last to leave and we were getting baleful looks from the staff. However, we made our late exit with much accomplished. ======================================================================= Minutes of Club Meeting held on day March 24, 2009 Present:- Gary Banbury, Maria Amrein, Cindy Richards, Trish Jurd, Barbara Johnson, Malcolm Baldwin, Shirley Baldwin, Bill Corbutt, Ailsa Corbutt, Gwenda Wright, John Staib, Julie Larpent, Barry Cheeseman, Colleen Brown, Rosemary Hinrichsen, Ian Hinrichsen, Laurie Sims, John Knight, Peter Williams, Bob Downes, Denis Bettridge, Barb Douglas Apologies:- Reg Berthelsen, Jenny Mallett, Steve O'Connor, Mary van Luyn, Gary Moloney Visitors:- Gordon Dean The meeting was opened by Barbara, our President, at 7.20 pm. She told members that our first entry as a Club into international competition, the 29th Annual George W. Glennie Nature Interclub Exhibition, was now complete and that confirmation had been received that our entries had arrived. Now we just wait for the accolades to pour in! (Joke.) Colleen gave details of the forms to be filled in for the Exhibition at The Centre and the time lines for the display. The launch of Barry Cheeseman's book to celebrate 150 years of horses and racing in the Scenic Rim, entitled "They Gallop at Dawn", is set for Friday 12th June, 6.30 to 8.30pm at The Centre. Some help will be needed on the night so numbers able to attend and assist are 4
5 needed at the May meeting. Our newsletter editor, Maria, asked for Photographic Profiles of Members for the newsletter to be submitted, for an occasional feature. So sharpen up your writing skills and accompany your biography with a few complementary snaps. Our monthly excursion is to the Maritime Museum at South Bank this Sunday, meeting on the boardwalk at 11.30, lunch and then on to the Museum. (See report on this later in the Newsletter). We keep trying to finalise our Calendar but changes are inevitable. John Knight is handling the 'Hunt and Shoot' day on May 31st - it will be local to keep the driving expenses down. It has been decided that our 'Christmas in July' lunch will be held at the Dugandan Pub at Boonah, probably on 26/7/09 - to be confirmed. We may walk off lunch at Mt French National Park. The Treasurer is collecting annual subscriptions so please get these in ASAP. The Secretary had too many s and printouts to discuss in detail. Most of these are referred to in the Executive Meeting Minutes and she is only too pleased to inform those who are interested in particular competitions etc after any meeting or please /phone. At last Vice-President Ian was able to introduce our speaker and judge for the evening, Gordon Dean who is a member of Wynnum Club. He sacrificed a meeting at his club to come to ours at quite a distance so we are very grateful to him. While Gordon is still in the workforce, he spends his weekends and any spare time taking photos of birds and sport. He showed us a number of images on sport this time, in particular mountain biking, surfing and surf carnivals, speed boat racing, beach volley ball and so on. It is easier to get up closer with some of these sports which are not contracted out to professional photographers. On the other hand, Gordon does have a VERY LONG LENS. Barb D. was pleased to hear that Gordon is a Canon Compadre while the Nikonians made signs to avert evil vibes. In fact, as he described what equipment he used for different sports, it became clear that there is really no one lens to suit all situations in sports photography. While for mountain bike riding shots, Gordon might use a mm lens on somewhere between F5 and F8, for beach volleyball he might use a 17-35mm, a mm for surf carnivals and he has to resort to his 500mm for surfing. He sells some of his sports shots as digital images from his website but not quite enough yet to allow him to retire. After his talk, he took questions on the use of monopods and tripods. We then adjourned for supper before Gordon fainted from lack of food having come pretty well straight from work. He certainly needed the sort of sustenance laid on by Trish Jurd (megayum!) to cope with the Critique and then the Enlargement Judging. We finally made our exits at half past ten after a very interesting and convivial meeting. OUR NEWSLETTER IS KINDLY PRINTED AT THE BEENLEIGH OFFICE OF BRETT RAGUSE, FEDERAL MEMBER FOR FORDE Editor s Ramblings: Something to ponder! Logic takes you from A to B, imagination takes you everywhere. 5
6 MARITIME MUSEUM EXCURSION On Sunday March 29 th, a group of us visited the Maritime Museum at Southbank for a day of photography of things maritime. The Southbank Markets was a busy place in the morning with lots to see before everyone met on the Boardwalk and then adjourned to the Arbour Cafes for delicious choices for lunch, of course followed by huge, dripping icecreams. It was great to see new members Ailsa and Bill come along for the day, also Colleen and Reg who had attended a black tie dinner the night before and stayed in the city, coming to join us for lunch. Boats and machinery to photograph lured Laurie along, as well as Ian, Rosemary and Barb, and Mary brought the whole family along to explore the museum. There were so many ships; model ships, ships in bottles, sailing ships, and a navy ship. Inside the museum we found all sorts of things to do with ships; bells, lights, plates, ropes, cabins and flags. Photographic possibilities were everywhere and outside we found the tugboat Forceful, a Navy frigate the Diamantina and the beautiful but very small Duyfken. Mary s children had a great time exploring all through the frigate and Ian disappeared there, with his tripod, for a while. Ailsa and Bill were very interested in photographing the Duyfken and spent quite a while there. Laurie was seen investigating how everything mechanical worked and Rosemary discovered an interesting mirrored ceiling, taking a different angle looking up. After an enjoyable day and learning lots about things maritime, we gathered around a huge white propeller for a group photo then left for a coffee at Southbank before going back to our cars or catching the train. A great day! 6
