1 Big Cedar Lodge Paint Out October 13 15, 2011 Entry Fee: $40 ($50 if you sign up after October 5) Allow yourself to be immersed in the beauty of the Ozarks in this open air (en plein air) competition. The Paint Out will consist of two and a half days of painting, including a Quick Draw event and a Night Paint Out. All resort guests as well as the general public will be able to purchase your work throughout the event as well as during the art show which will be on the last evening. The judging for the competition will be conducted by Matt Smith. Matt is an accomplished and widely renowned plein air artist. You can see his work and learn more about him at Matt will be completing a demonstration painting during the event and everyone is encouraged to watch. All 2 D mediums are welcome. Only works completed on site during the days of this competition will be judged. Participants may purchase $5.00 sack lunches each day. Coolers will be provided to keep your lunch cool! Please indicate at time of check in if you wish to have a sack lunch. While at registration don t forget to pick up your free gift for all participants! New this year, we are offering the opportunity to paint at Dogwood Canyon Nature Park on Friday! And, there s no charge for admission for participants (regularly $8.95 per adult). More details below! Dogwood Canyon Nature Park sprawls across the Missouri Arkansas border, just south of Branson, MO. The entrance is located on Missouri Highway 86, approximately 16 miles west of U.S. Highway 65, approximately a twenty minute drive from Big Cedar Lodge. Many opportunities await you within this amazing 10,000 acre slice of Ozarks paradise. Our round trip paved trail covers 6 1/2 miles and is relatively level. It guides you past beautiful limestone bluffs and tumbling waterfalls, over bridges formed of native stone or hand crafted of wrought iron, and even a covered bridge of Amish construction. Our beautiful rainbow trout swim in clear spring fed waters, easily visible as you pass by. We are a wilderness park and you may expect to see a variety of native wildlife, your best chance being earlier in the morning. Allow plenty of time to absorb the beauty that surrounds you at any season of the year.

Even if you participated in the workshop, you will need to bring your canvases to be stamped. You will also receive your free gift at check in along with your complete Paint Out Packet. Please wait to start painting until you are signaled to. Painting must be turned into the at 6:45pm. 7:00pm Matt Smith Complimentary Demo Worman Room Please join us and Matt Smith as he gives a complimentary demonstration for all participants to view. This is a great way to open the 2011 Plein Air Paint Out! 8:30pm Artist Reception & Welcome Cedar Creek A&B Join us to celebrate the arts and the joy of plein air painting during this welcome reception featuring complimentary hor oeuvres and beverages. All participants will receive vouchers for 10% off at Big Cedar Lodge Restaurants. Friday, October 14 Throughout the Day Open Painting Big Cedar Lodge or Dogwood Canyon. Your options for Dogwood Canyon are as follows: o You may take your personal vehicle to and from Dogwood Canyon. You may take a Big Cedar Shuttle for a minimal fee of $5.00. Please be in front of registration at 8am to take the shuttle. o You may take a Big Cedar Shuttle along with a boxed lunch for $ o Please note that personal cars are not allowed throughout the park. If you plan to take your personal car to Dogwood please arrive by 8:30am so a tram can transport you throughout the park. No charge will be assessed for participants entering the park. There is a café near the entrance of the park where you may also purchase lunch; breakfast is not available at the cafe. At the time of check in you will be asked to confirm your plans for this day, make reservations for shuttle service and appropriate charges will be applied to your credit card on file. 7:00pm 9:00pm Night Paint Out Artist Choice of at Big Cedar Lodge Paint by the moonlight as the nearly full moon reflects of the surface of Table Rock Lake and illuminates the surroundings. Artists may want to bring a head lamp. Both the Quick Draw and Night Paint Out will be popular spectator events and will be a great way to connect with potential buyers. Painting must be turned in at the immediately at 9:15pm.

3 Saturday, October 15 12:00pm Painting Turn in Deadline All works to be judged should be framed, signed on the back, and turned in by 12:00pm at the Grandview Conference Center. Feel free to paint all morning! Just make sure you get your paintings turned in by noon. 3:30pm 5:00pm Show Set Up Please use this time to set up your space to display your works. You will find a table designated for you with your name card. Tables will be provided; however you should bring your own table easels. You may also bring floor easels but they will only be permitted if space is available. Feel free to display work completed while at Big Cedar and favorites from your own collection! Please note your display space is only 8 by 18 so please plan appropriately. 5:00pm 8:00pm Closing Reception, Art Show & Gallery Ballroom The reception is open to the public and Big Cedar Lodge guests. Enjoy complimentary wine and appetizers. This is an opportunity to see all of the art that was created during the week and purchase paintings. The winners and wine label will be revealed. The reception will be highly promoted so take advantage of this great opportunity! The Wine Label Award painting will be featured on a wine label at Big Cedar Lodge for an entire year. The winner will also receive 2 free cases of the wine with their label. We have been very fortunate to have many area retail art stores donate a variety of supplies and prizes for the Paint Out. In addition to some of the supplies you received during registration, we will be having drawings throughout the competition for prizes. Please note the signage during the event recognizing these great area art suppliers. Rules and Guidelines of the Plein Air Paint Out In an effort to promote the Plein Air Paint Out and the Saturday Art Show and Gallery throughout the week to area residents and Big Cedar guests, participants can bring up to two easels to display paintings in the pre function space of main floor of conference center throughout the event. Guests wanting to make purchases may do so at the conference center registration desk. Paintings on display do not have to be completed at Big Cedar. No table top easels. All artwork must be framed and priced. Please give any paintings along with easels to Jana or Jennifer during Registration and they will place them for display. Blank canvases or other painting surfaces must be stamped at check in, and submissions must be produced entirely in plein air on Big Cedar Lodge or Dogwood Canyon Nature Park property during the days of the competition. A 25% commission will be taken on any paintings sold at Big Cedar Lodge during this competition, and all sales will be handled by Big Cedar Lodge. Canvases must not exceed 30" x 30" Paintings to be judged should be signed on the back ONLY.

4 All paintings that you wish to be entered into the competition or that you wish to sell must be framed (frames are not provided). Artists may begin painting for the competition as soon as they have had their canvases stamped. Big Cedar will be taking pictures and video of the event. All artists must agree to these images being used in promotional material. All paintings must be turned in by noon on Saturday to be eligible for a prize. Artists must sign a release form that grants the copyrights of the piece that wins the Wine Label Award, so that it may be featured on the wine label. For any art purchased by Big Cedar Lodge the artist must sign a release form that grants the copyrights of the piece to Big Cedar Lodge giving them the ability to use the art for promotional purposes throughout the property and re produce the piece for the purpose of selling it to guests. Liability and Insurance While precautions will be taken to safeguard artwork and participants while at Big Cedar Lodge, we accept no liability for the loss of, damage to; artwork in transit, in storage or on display, or for any personal injury incurred during participation in this event. Artists are strongly encouraged to insure their own person and artwork. When painting the landscape this means working outdoors. For some, the overwhelming amount of information encountered in the field can be a bit intimidating. However, experience and study will help overcome this and contribute to building stronger and more powerful compositions. This class will focus on making order out of nature s chaos by stressing the basics of drawing, value, design and color and by learning to see in terms of mass and form rather than detail and line. We will begin with a quick discussion on supplies and equipment, then follow up with a short lecture on the fundamentals of painting. The benefits and drawbacks of photography as a tool and studio vs. field work also will be discussed. The rest of our time will be spent in the field. Each person will be given personal attention and we will compliment this with demonstrations.
