2 Since the previous meeting, with the occurrence of Cyclone Debbie and the damage in its aftermath, Ian asked after any club members and their families who were affected. With the exception of Bruce whose nursery suffered sizeable loss of stock and equipment, most club members appear to have escaped relatively unscathed something to be thankful for. Brent Randall spoke about the forthcoming Open Studios event on the weekend of May He discussed details of the programme for the weekend and how members can help. Members can submit matted prints for display and can also assist by attending workshops on the weekends or volunteering ideas for workshops where they can assist. Four club members, Steve Fitchett, Sue Rodwell, Mark Connop and Amanda Laverty, will be exhibiting their work. Brent will shortly programme details and times of workshops etc. Brent said the Club has been invited to provide photographers for the Clydesdale Spectacular taking place over two days, June 17 and 18 at Boonah. The organisers will donate $ to the Club and will also hold a workshop on the best way to photograph horses in return for the Club s supplying photographers for both days. Brent will keep us informed. After thanking Brent, Ian said that there will be no other official club outings in May, as the Open Studios weekend will take precedence. The Scenic Rim Photographic Competition closes on 26 April 2017 with the results not long to follow. Mark Connop informed interested members of the upcoming Canungra Rodeo on Saturday 8 July 2017 and advised it is unlikely that the Club will be official photographers this year, but it may become a club outing. Dr Dayman Steptoe from Canungra was introduced by Ian, Dayman was accompanied by his wife Yoshimi Steptoe. Although his areas of interest in photography include portraiture, people observation, landscapes and travel, Dayman decided to concentrate on his exploits and obsession with bush photography. His slideshows of both moving and stills from his many trips all over Australia opened our eyes to a whole new photographic world. Dayman s radical approach is illustrated by his manner of acquiring the equipment he needed he traded his images of subjects showing the equipment of a potential sponsor being used at an event etc. or images that he thought a magazine might be interested in acquiring, for the cameras and lenses he needed. When this worked, he then went bush taking photos, telling his bush adventures with images. Growing interest in time-lapse photography has taught him the art of improvisation from the economical use of batteries to a dolly (moveable platform) for taking photos in extreme situations e.g. underneath rock art, in rising water and for star shooting. It was a pleasant change to listen to a photographer who is not afraid to admit to faults in his images (colour, lighting etc.), faults which he points out and then explains why they happened and what exactly he was trying to do at the time. Dayman said his aim with photography is to find a subject which he calls boring which could make a technically good but basically mundane image and then take that image to the next level into something extraordinary. He remarked that in these days of the ubiquitous tablet and iphone, where anyone can take a reasonably good image, a photographer wanting to take a winning photo, needs to surprise a viewer with an exceptional image which makes the viewer say, How did you do THAT?? Dayman s steps to achieving this aim are worthwhile studying: 1. Subject 2. Angle 3. Glass (lens) 4. Light Page 2 of 10

3 5. Background 6. Framing 7. Extra plus (something, not the expected e.g. butterfly NOT on the top but approaching the tip of the branch) 8. Distort (the change which lifts the image to a different level) Dayman himself struggled to find the correct term to describe the last two steps every photographer needs to decide for themselves what it is that will make their image a winner. Ian thanked him for his presentation which certainly captured the audience s full attention. After supper, supplied by Jill, with everyone enjoying Anzac biscuits appropriate to the day, we watched two slideshows. The first, prepared by John, was contributed by members who attended our recent evening shoot at Burleigh Heads to capture the fire twirlers and the drummers on the beach and the second was of Brent s trip to Thailand. Brent gave us some interesting commentary of his impressions of the people in number and colourful culture and the great contrast between the rich and the poor in society. Warning here don t ask Brent about full camera cards if you want to stay healthy! The meeting closed around 9:10 pm Free to financial members. 8 SUBJECT DEFINITIONS Subject Self Portrait Sport Minimalism Still Life Weather Family Life Definition An image of yourself taken by yourself. You must be the person who pressed the shutter button. A photograph depicting any aspect of a sport. Keep it simple. Less is more. Minimal means few, the least, as little as possible. A minimalist photograph is one that conveys a scene using as few elements as necessary. Still Life images can be just about anything that does not move. The definition of a still life subject is an inanimate object but other subjects are loosely termed as still life as well. These include flowers, food, etc. They are life forms but they do not move. A photograph depicting some aspect or effect of weather - rain, storm, wind, lightning, cloud, sun etc. An image depicting some aspect of family life. The family need not be human. People Photograph of people. This section includes candid photographs and formal portraits Nature photography depicts living, untamed animals and uncultivated plants in a natural habitat, geology and the wide diversity of natural phenomena, from insects to icebergs. Photographs of animals which are domesticated, caged or under any form of restraint, as well as photographs of cultivated plants are ineligible. Minimal evidence of humans is acceptable for nature subjects, such as barn owls or storks, adapting to an environment modified by humans, or natural forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves, reclaiming it. Nature The original image must have been taken by the photographer, whatever photographic medium is used. manipulation or modification to the original image is limited to minor retouching of blemishes and must not alter the content of the original scene. After satisfying the above requirements, every effort should be made to use the highest level of artistic skill in all nature photographs. The APS definition of Nature is too complex to completely define here. Please go to the website for details: Scape Open A landscape is a photograph of natural scenery with land and sky based elements displayed in a pictorial fashion. It may include evidence of man, people, animals, even part of the sea provided that none of these additional elements dominates the photograph. A seascape is a photograph of natural coastal scenery, a wave study, or a picture of the open sea, provided always that the sea is the centre of interest of the photograph. People, boats and man-made structures may be present as incidental to the photograph. subject that is treated pictorially, embodying the elements of good design, arrangement or composition, which reflects the personal interpretation of the photographer.
