1 c IN Focus Des Plaines Camera Club Des Plaines, IL October 2010 Inside This Issue Club Participation Letter from the Vice-President Fall Fest Re-cap Critique Night Prospect Heights Library Display Marie Rakoczy to present Pro Show Gold Competition Results Upcoming Schedule October 2010 Monday, Oct pm Club Meeting, Critique Night Sunday, Oct 17 Glacial Park Tour of History photo op Monday Oct pm Club Meeting, Marie Rakoczy to demonstrate Pro Show Gold, Postcard Competition November 2010 Monday, Nov 8 Club Meeting Monday, Nov 22 - CLUB COMPETITION Members Jerry Hug and Eleanor Goss Club Participation Our club often lives up to our slogan, Dedicated to Photography, Creativity and Community by participating in community events as a way to become involved within our area and help the various services and organizations. It is a great way to practice and further develop new skills as well as see how others pursue their photography interest. It can be a way to sample different types of photography, and help keep things new. Sometimes a vague interest never gets pursued very far due to disappointing results and frustration, when simply talking to others and actually seeing how they get the shots can help encourage and change perspectives. A whole new door of opportunity can appear, often when going to a club event or photo op you didn t think you would want to do. Our club is dedicated to helping photographers explore their creativity and encourages everyone to ask questions and seek out help and information. Although we are all brought together for a technical interest, we are very much a social club too. It is not at all unusual for club members to discover other common interests beyond photography as they shoot together, or gather at meetings. IN Focus Newsletter Page 1-8
2 Des Plaines Camera Club Officers President...Jerry Hug Vice President.Tom Mulick Treasurer Irene Szilagyi Publicity Assistant Theresa Hart Recording Secretary Kay Michaely Program Director Tom Mulick IN Focus Editor Sue Lindell Member Dave Waycie Tom Mulick, DPCC Vice- President From the Vice-President: I want to thank those who carried the load of my responsibilities while I was gone on vacation. Jerry Hug and Dave Waycie, as well as all those who volunteered their time to take pictures at the Des Plaines Park District Fall Fest. We are in a great time of the year for taking pictures, although if you think about it any time of the year is great. With the changing colors in nature and the approach of Halloween we as photographers have many opportunities to get some really great pictures. It does take some effort to get out and do it though. Children are a great source for good photographs. Fall Festival The Des Plaines third annual Fall Festival was held the weekend of September at Lake Park in Des Plaines. Several camera club members participated in the event, taking pictures of families and individuals. The park district had a small area set up with straw bales, scarecrows and other autumn decorations as a backdrop. A small fee was charged, and a 4 by 6 inch print was made on site. The booth had many customers throughout the weekend, and club members rotated in to photograph them. Members Mark Belter, Eliot Libert, Eleanor Goss, Jerry Hug, Sue Lindell, Kay Michaely, Theresa Hart, Scott and Beth Striker and Dave Waycie volunteered for time increments over the entire weekend. Several members stayed beyond their allotted time, opting to stay and socialize with club friends and take photos throughout the rest of the large festival. Club members often give those random shots to the park district for their use. Members Theresa Hart and Dave Waycie continued on next page IN Focus Newsletter Page 2-8
3 From the Vice President continued: Sometimes we as photographers get stuck in a rut of sorts with the type of pictures we take. It takes some effort to learn to take people pictures if you are a landscape photographer. The nice thing about our club is that we have many photographers who are good at many types and styles of photography. From macro to portrait to landscape and product photography. We have members who make their living taking pictures and yet they join our club because of the diversity of our membership and ability to learn. Learning is what it is all about. The great thing about photography is that there is always something new to learn. Coming up we will have a variety of learning opportunities at club meetings. We will also have a field trip to Glacial Park in McHenry on October 17 th to take pictures at The Trail of History. Don t forget to look to CACCA as they also have learning opportunities in many areas. Just looking at photos of other photographers is a learning experience. Critique with Bring your Camera night After general business announcements, and showing of our photo assignment, our next club meeting, October 11 will have a critique of images. Bring in an original and edited (digital) photo on a jump drive or the properly sized image to Tom and see how it may be improved with suggestions and comments made by fellow members. This is a very popular and informative topic, and the first critique of the season. If we have time later in the evening, and you have questions regarding your camera we will gather in groups to try to answer your questions. Please bring your camera and the manual. At the end of the meeting we will announce the new photo assignment. Prospect Heights Library Display The Prospect Heights Public Library will be displaying images from the Des Plaines Camera Club during the month of December. We plan to collect the images sometime in November. The images will need to be framed and the frame will need to include a wire hanger as per library request. Makers can indicate if their image is available for sale. Further details will follow. Marie Rakoczy to present Pro Show Gold Club Member Marie Rakoczy will give a presentation on creating a Pro Show Gold slideshow at our meeting October 25 th. Marie is an award winning photographer, and has used Pro Show Gold for public displays of the remarkable images created by her and her husband Joe. Marie has taught Elements classes at the Des Plaines Park District in the past and her presentation promises to be extremely informative as well as interesting. We will also be having a postcard competition at our meeting October 25. Make up to four 4 x 6 prints, using any theme or subject you wish. Club members will then vote on favorite images. The postcards will also compete in CACCAs spring post card competition. Tom Mulick, Vice President Des Plaines Camera Club IN Focus Newsletter Page 3-8
4 Next Club Assignment. Send in four (4) pictures that show a pattern. Patterns are all around us, in nature and architecture as well as street scenes. You may not even have to go out of your home to fill this assignment. The pictures should have been taken between October 1st and October 10th. Please resize your photos to no larger than 1024 by 768 on the largest side. Rename the files with your name followed by a dash and then the photo title. Here is an example: Jim Jones - Summer Photo. MAC users, please put your files in a folder and send me the folder. In order to show these photos at the next club meeting, you will need to me your files by the end of day, Sunday October 10th. Files received after October 10th may not be accepted. I m thinking by Tom Mulick Competition Results The Print of the Month for September is I m thinking, by Tom Mulick. The final image is nothing like the original shot. Let's just say it was a picture within a picture. This image was taken with a Canon 40D Shutter speed: 1/100 sec, Aperture: 5.6, Exposure mode: Av, Metering mode: Center-weighted average, ISO: 1250, Lens: EF mm f/ l IS USM, Focal length: 190mm.
