Only financial members can enter competitions. 2. Images must be the original work of the entrant. 3. Images may be used for publicity and interclub competitions. 4. Judges are chosen by the competition secretary. 5. The judges decision is final. 6. Protests must be made, in writing to the competition secretary, within seven days of the infringement. 7. Shortfall (catch up) entries, due to exceptional circumstances, will only be confirmed by discussion with the competition secretary. 8. An image may be entered on one media type only i.e. the image is unique and cannot be entered as projected image and then print. 9. Competition calendar is January to December inclusive each year. 10. No responsibility is taken for damage or loss of images. 11. Prints not claimed within one year will be disposed of. 12. New members are placed in C grade unless proof of qualifications (e.g. PSNZ Honours) is demonstrated or a portfolio is submitted to the selection and grading committee for consideration or at the consideration of the committee. 13. Perpetual trophies remain the property of the club, but are retained by winners in New Zealand until recall in October each year. 14. Members are placed in A, B or C grade for competition purposes. 15. In natural history the original image as captured must not be manipulated or altered in any way that would alter the physical aspect of the subject. 16. Landscape and photojournalism images must be entered through Open competitions to qualify for the Annual CPS Final Night Salon Landscape and Photojournalism awards. Nationwide annual competition held in May each year; results presented in July. Entry Fee. Entries may only be of the New Zealand landscape. All members commence in C grade unless member i) submits portfolio of images to selection and grading committee to evaluate for optimal grade or ii) holds PSNZ honours (or equivalent from a recognised photographic society) or iii) at the consideration of the committee. Members may only move grades through the accumulation of points generated by Acceptance or Honours awards gained in the aggregate competitions. An entrant achieving an average score for entries during the competition year which is higher than that for a higher grade will be promoted to that grade. Lowest grade for members. Middle grade for members; LPSNZ holders are assigned as B grade immediately it is known. APSNZ and FPSNZ holders are assigned as A grade immediately it is known. Open topic means that any subject can be entered. Images of natural history submitted into open competitions will not be judged according to natural history criteria. Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archaeology, in such a fashion that a well-informed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality. Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements are integral parts of the nature story such as nature subjects, like barn owls or storks, adapted to an environment modified by humans, or where those human elements are in situations depicting natural forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves. Scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals are permissible. 2

3 Photographs of human created hybrid plants, cultivated plants, feral animals, domestic animals, or mounted specimens are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement. No techniques that add, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping are permitted. Techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph without changing the nature story or the pictorial content, or without altering the content of the original scene, are permitted including HDR, focus stacking and dodging/burning. Techniques that remove elements added by the camera, such as dust spots, digital noise, and film scratches, are allowed. Stitched images are not permitted. All allowed adjustments must appear natural. Colour images can be converted to grey-scale monochrome. Infra-red images, either direct-captures or derivations, are not allowed. Images entered in Natural History can have animals, birds, marine subjects, insects, landscapes, geologic formations, weather phenomena, astrophotography, fungi, algae, extant organisms, carcasses of extant (still existing) species as the primary subject matter. This includes images taken with the subjects in controlled conditions, such as zoos, game farms, botanical gardens, aquariums and any enclosure where the subjects are totally dependent on man for food. Naturalised subjects are allowable. Examples of naturalised subjects are deer, black swan, monarch butterfly, and briar (not cultivated) roses. Online entry Materially unaltered Photojournalism Portraiture Landscape Non-acceptance Acceptance The Final Image Any nature picture should record the truth of what the photographer saw at the time the picture was taken and reflect the competence of the image as captured by the photographer. Digital techniques that extend the capability of the camera may be used providing that they honestly and accurately represent the original nature story or event at the time of capture. Submission of images via website. This image has not had the facts materially altered and is eligible for photojournalism, natural history and landscape competitions.materially altered means that originally visible items or parts thereof have been removed or other content has been added after the time of exposure. Normal darkening and lightening, processing of contrast or adjustment of colour to match the original environment are acceptable modifications. A photograph is a fair and accurate representation of the events they depict in both content and tone and is materially unaltered. This photograph is primarily a portrait image. This photograph is primarily a landscape image and is materially unaltered. Judge has decided that image is not worthy of an award on this occasion. Up to 2 points will be given. Image may be changed, improved and re-entered into other competitions. Judge has decided that image should receive an award; shows good composition and technical skills. In aggregate competitions, the photographer will gain 3 or 4 points and receive a certificate. Image may only be re-entered into the Annual CPS Salon. Approximately one third (1/3) of entries receive an acceptance. Accumulated points enable a member to move grades at the end of the year. Acceptance images are eligible for the Annual CPS Salon. 4 Honours Best in Show Commended Highly commended Points Judge Judge had decided that the image should receive the second highest award. Image deemed to be of excellent standard. In aggregate competitions, the photographer will gain 5 points and receive a certificate. Approximately 5-10% of acceptances receive an honours. Accumulated points enable a member to move grades at the end of the year. Honours images are eligible for the Annual CPS Salon. Judge will decide one image to be the best image in the competition. That image will be awarded an 6 points and receive a certificate. Best in Show images are eligible for the Annual CPS Salon. Only available in C grade competitions and Salons. Images gaining a commended award may be entered into other competitions. Only available in C grade competitions and Salons, image is deemed to be of a higher standard. Images gaining a highly commended award may be entered into other competitions. Only used in Projected Image or Print Salon. Image with highest points is the winner. Person with recognised qualifications in photography; having demonstrated a high level of proficiency in photography. Judges may be accredited by PSNZ. The viewpoint of one judge may differ from the viewpoint of another judge. 5 How to enter a competition Projected image entered into competitions must be: Jpeg file srgb colour space (preferable) Maximum of 1620 pixels wide wide and a maximum of 1080 pixels tall. Use protective packaging for prints. Have the membership number and title at the top of the back of the print. For materially unaltered, photojournalism and landscape images. 6 Annual CPS Final Night Salon Only images entered into the aggregate competitions which receive Acceptance Honours or Best in Show during the competition year can be entered into the Annual CPS Salon. Projected images are automatically entered. Prints must be re-entered to be considered. Trophies awarded at Final Night held in December. 6

7 How to enter an Audio Visual, Time Lapse and Video Competitions One entry per member per competition. Previous award winning entries will not be accepted. There is no restriction on subject matter. The organisers reserve the right to refuse an entry that they consider, in their absolute discretion, to be undesirable, unsuitable or incorrectly programmed for projection. The entry may run for any duration up to five (5) minutes. Entries longer than five (5) minutes will be disqualified. The inclusion of video clips and time-lapse is permitted in an Audio Visual, Limited to no more than 50% of the Audio Visual. (Time Lapse and Video Competitons are stand alone competions additionally) Movement - panning and zooming which can be created in some software programs, is permissible. It is recommended that the inclusion of graphics be limited to a maximum of 20% of the viewing time where such items form an essential part of the AV. In this context, graphics is used to cover any design elements included in the AV including the title slides, credits, text but does not include the photographs taken by the photographer. The entry must be a stand alone digital production, able to be run by clicking on an icon and without the need of the software that first produced it or any other conversion software. The output must be Video Format for AVs (MP4) Other formats can be convert via HandBreak. The entry is to be submitted either on a disc or USB drive by hand to the Competition secretary at a club meeting. AV's cannot be entered by online upload. The entry must include the following information either written with permanent marker on the disc, or in a separate file on the USB drive: The author's name, the title of the Audio Visual, and the exact running time. The production of the AV (photos and compilation) must be the original work of the entrant. Any assistance with computer editing should be minimal. The text for a voice-over should be prepared by the author but may be spoken by someone else at the specific direction of the author. All credits should be declared at the end of the sequence. All material not the original work of the entrant eg. music or text must be acknowledged but do not include the Audio Visual author's name. (The selectors must not know the identity of the author during the selection process). All images in the presentation must be exposed by the entrant. Resolution a maximum of 1920 px on the horizontal side and 1080 px on the vertical side, in the srgb colour space and on a black background.
