2 PSQ PRESIDENT S REPORT: Ben Stoffl Dear Members of all PSQ affiliated organisations, Soon our yearly Convention will be upon us once again. This year it will be held on the Labour Day long weekend from 30 th April to 2 nd May, with the Keppel Coast Camera Club hosting it at the wonderful and beautiful Yeppoon. If you haven t registered yet have a look at the program and corresponding details and see how affordable it is this year. Register as soon as possible and book your accommodation as there is another event on the same weekend in Yeppoon! Early Bird discount closes on the 1 st April, however, you can still register after this date for an additional cost. Early registration assists the host club with their organisation for catering purposes. The winners of our yearly competition the Salon of Excellence Queensland will be announced as usual at the Gala-Dinner this year on Sunday 1 st May. The entry forms for this competition can be downloaded from the PSQ website. The Gympie Camera Club is once again, organising the SEQ this year, because there wasn t any club volunteering for this, even after I asked at the PSQ-BBQ. I hope next year there will be another club prepared to organise this competition - consider the profit of approx. $400 - $500 for your club. I will remind you later in the year. Beside the PSQ Convention, the next most important event is the PSQ-BBQ, which is usually held end of November and is usually organised by a PSQ affiliated organisation. Again, there is a profit to be made by the organising club. Which club, group, society, will it be this year? Can your club help? Now onto a totally different issue: A few years ago we organised a President s meeting. At that meeting it was mentioned that PSQ could possibly assist clubs with organisational issues e.g. how to conduct committee meetings etc. Please let the PSQ Committee know, should your affiliated organisation require any assistance with any organisational/administrative issues as we have many experienced and knowledgeable Committee persons. 3 Kingaroy Photographic Club Lifetime Membership Awards At the Kingaroy Photographic Club Annual General meeting held on Tuesday evening 16 th February it was proposed that three members be honoured by being given Lifetime Membership. The motion was passed unanimously. Cliff Schwenke joined the club in 1958, Geoffrey Armstrong joined in 1967 and Mervin (Mick) Cook became a member in That is one hundred and forty three years between them and all three still regularly attend our meetings. Cliff s wife Audrey was also a keen member of the club and she is remembered through the annual Audrey Schwenke Memorial Award for Landscape Photography. Mick s wife Val especially liked to photograph children when she was a club member, and she is remembered each year through the Val Cook Memorial Award for Child Photography. All other Executive and Committee positions were filled and members look forward to another full programme in New members are always welcome on the third Tuesday evening of each month. 7 PSQ Committee Members Profile I have been interested in photography since my teenage years; however my background and experience artistically has been in painting and drawing, in media such as oils, acrylics, pastels and charcoal, and printmaking. The vast majority of this was B.C. Before Children. As I tend to become submerged into any artistic pursuit in which I engage, and as ignoring young children is generally frowned upon, I put down my paints and pastels for many years. As the kids became more self-sufficient, my interest in artistic pursuits resurfaced, this time with a focus on photography, as it is much easier to switch off a camera and computer than it is to tidy away oil paints. I can thank my daughter for beginning my gear addiction, as it was during her gymnastics competitions that I became annoyed at the restrictions imposed by my 5mp Kodak camera and set out to capture the types of images I had seen in magazines crisp, noise free, stop motion images that showcased peak athletic ability. I succeeded eventually. As my knowledge of things photographic increased, one of my other loves, travel, also came to the fore, bringing with it trips to Fiji, Tasmania, Thailand, Uluru, Cape York & Sri Lanka. My husband thinks this is wonderful, as it finally gives him an excuse to go camping. It has also resulted in the need for expanding my storage and backup systems to handle the immense number of images captured in these incredibly diverse locations! On top of all of that, I try to regularly shoot fine art or creative images, I enjoy macro photography a great deal, love shooting animals and birds, and seriously enjoy creating composites that give life to my ideas. I became a member of the Emerald Photographic Club several years ago and have been president for the last two. I have watched it grow into an open, welcoming group of people who have a diverse range of interests and skills, and who truly enjoy sharing information and spending time together. We welcome new members and provide an encouraging environment in which they can develop their abilities. We have great workshops and get togethers planned for this year and we are encouraging our members to enter more images for assessment by PSQ judges, as well as maybe some national or international salons. I will also be becoming more familiar with these types of competitions as I have recently submitted my application to become an understanding judge. As for the future? No doubt my husband and I will be completing more Adventures as we plan to travel as much as we are able, when circumstances permit the world at our feet and a couple of cameras in my hands!
