Retro Night January 2, 2017 Bring your antique camera, slides, and other retro (pre-digital) photographic equipment. We will provide the slide projector and light box. 4

5 Photography Trivia Curt Benward A Big Camera - The European Space Agency in 2013 launched the Gaia spacecraft. Its primary mission is to image the Milky Way with its billion pixel (1,000,000,000 pixels) camera. For comparison a 24 mega pixel DSLR has 24,000,000 pixels. The resolution of the camera is five microarcseconds - roughly the size of a dime on the moon seen from the Earth. More Space Connections or How Did Digital Imaging Started- NASA began using digital imaging in the 60's to turn signals from space probes into maps of the moon. The technology they developed was turned over to the spy satellite program. Kodak in the 70's started using it for commercial purposes. The first digital print was made in 1986 containing 1.4 million pixels and the rest is history. Two Englishmen - Cherry and Richard Kearton took the first photograph of a bird's nest with eggs in It was the beginning of photographs with a "lens camera" replacing the natural history artist. They went on to take many of the earliest bird photos and their book With Nature and a Camera popularized the entire field of wildlife photography.
