1 Canon PhotoMarathon 2016 Hong Kong Instantly challenging contestants with day-and-night photo missions Canon Hongkong company (Canon) held today (25 th September) the 8 th Canon PhotoMarathon 2016 Hong Kong (CPMHK) at Hall 1A of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). 2,800 contestants took the instant photo challenge with new competition elements, indulging themselves in the real Shoot for Hong Kong experience! CPM is the only photo competition of its kind in Asia-Pacific, with photo missions announced and to be completed within the same day. Contestants are required to travel in the city within the time limit to create and submit their photos according to the themes, challenging their creativity and endurance. Canon s President and CEO Mr. Shunichi Morinaga expressed, Hong Kong is a unique and exquisite city where beauty could be spotted in both downtown and small neighborhoods. By hosting CPMHK, the biggest annual photography event in Asia, we want to encourage photography lovers of all skill levels to join us and Shoot for Hong Kong. While enjoying the fun-filled event, they could also explore and create great memory in the city with their cameras. Instant photo mission with a taste of cultural preservation at the Mystery market With photo themes announced in several stages, contestants from both Challenge and Open Category create their works with an interchangeable-lens type digital camera and submit the photos within the specified time. Contestants of Challenge Category were challenged with 3 themes including Affections for Evolving Kowloon, View of the Back and Leisure Night within 8 hours, while Contestants of Open Category had to complete 2 themes which are Breakthrough/Broken and Sleepless City within the 6-hour time limit. This is the very first time for CPM to extend the schedule to the evening so that contestants can capture the beauty of Hong Kong s day and night. As an enhanced Shoot for Hong Kong experience, contestants also visit a checkpoint unveiled instantly to experience the culture of community. The checkpoint at Munsang College in Kowloon City was transformed into a Mystery market. Filled with elements of the Viva Blue House Revitalization Scheme ; residents of the Wan Chai neighborhood shared their wisdom and culture with various workshops and music performances, inspiring creativity of contestants. 2 Enrollment fee to support Blue House Cluster s community development Each year, the enrollment fee of the competition is donated, with no deduction, to a charitable organization. To ensure the efficient use of donation, Canon Honkong is currently in a three-year partnership with St. James Settlement. The HK$645,430 enrollment fee raised this year, along with the enrollment fee raised in the past two years, amounting to the total of HK$1,707,157, will be used to support the organization for their effort in cultural preservation in the Viva Blue House Revitalization Scheme: Documentation and archive: Their 3-year photo documentation project on renovation of the Blue House cluster, and archive on artifacts collected in the cluster. Community building: A series of workshops to pass on skills and craftsmanship in the community. Also the production and release of Stone Nullah Post, the community newsletter with residents in the neighborhood serving as the editorial team, sharing the community s stories and latest updates. The first issue was published in August. Effort to assist the local community to restore their homes after renovation. The Viva Blue House Revitalization Scheme is Hong Kong s first project that embraces the mission on retention of both residents and the building, with the first phase completed in May 2016 and the whole scheme expected to complete by the end of this year. We hope that the project could preserve the colorful way of living at the tenement building community, serving as the platform for residents and community members to share, support and learn from each other. It could be a good reference for future revitalization projects. Professional sharing on 4K video shooting In early September, Canon launched EOS 5D Mark IV, the brand s latest full-frame interchangeable-lens type digital camera. To keep photography enthusiasts informed with the latest photography technology, Canon invited professional photographer Mr. Harlim Winata Djauhar to share first-hand tips of shooting with EOS 5D Mark IV with CPM2016 contestants. Leveraging the camera s 4K video shooting function and the Dual Pixel CMOS AF (DAF) technology, he demonstrated the common spirit shared by Kyudo and photography. The Canon showcase area also offered trial of the latest EOS 5D Mark IV and other Canon products. The first-ever personalized souvenir Every year, CPM contestants enjoy receiving exclusive souvenirs. The Canon PhotoMarathon 2016 Special-edition customized camera strap is the first-ever personalized souvenir to be introduced; allowing contestants to create the best camera accessory with customized text. Professional judging panel selecting Grand award winner from two categories The professional judging panel of CPM 2016 includes Mr. Kwan Kai Wing, President of Hong Kong Institute of Professional Photographers; fashion photographer Mr. Ming N; Mr. Francis So, travel photographer and time-lapse artist; and Mr. Vincent Cheung, Senior Director and General Manager of the Consumer Imaging & Information Group and the Corporate Communications Division of Canon Hongkong. They will select the final winners from over 7,000 remarkable entries based on a range of criteria including creativity in interpreting the theme, use of color, light and shadow, composition and relevance to the theme. Results of today s competition will be announced on 5th November, including the Grand Award winners selected from the Challenge and Open category. Grand Award winner of the Challenge category will attend the Canon Photo Clinic in Japan, while the counterpart at the Open category will represent Hong Kong at CPM 2017 Taipei.
