Scott tells us, I have been interested (in photography) for about 35 years, although I did not really start to study and understand the technical and artistic aspects until about 5 years ago. Beth has been pursuing her interest over the past 16 years after taking a college course in photography. They are drawn to the hobby by both the artistic and technical blend as well as the full range of style; from traditional to completely abstract. It is an opportunity to show others how you see the world, says Scott. Beth adds, It forces me to get out and go places I would not have gone otherwise and bring back a permanent memory. continued on next page IN Focus Newsletter Page 1-7

Although there was another club closer to his home, the DPCC seemed to be more active and the examples of club member s images were along the styles Scott and Beth are interested in working towards. Jerry Hug, DPCC President From the President: We are now in another great time of the year for photography. It is cold out, but with fresh snow on the way, who knows all the opportunities that we will have for some great images. The Pizza Party was a success. 3 From the President continued: Monday, we are in for a treat. You will have food, fellowship and Tom Mulick s revised show from his Humanitarian trip to Cuba. The evening at the Silver Stallion is Dutch Treat. First of all thanks to everyone who supplied photographs for the Prospect Heights Library Exhibit. Everyone please come on Tuesday evening for the Reception even if you did not supply an image. You will see a truly wide variety of subjects and photo interests of our club members. We have about 49 images in the show. 7:00 PM Prospect Heights Library at Elm and Camp McDonald Road. (West of 83). The show was hung by Kay Michaely, Mariam Kravis, Tom Lobacz and Jerry Hug. January is our teaching class for Photoshop Elements for the Park District. Tom and I are teaching Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.0 for both Mac s and PC s. This is for beginners and intermediates and anyone who wants to review Elements and learn the new and better editing methods in 9.0. You can buy this new version for less than $45. It is worth every penny. See our website for the details. You can also find out about the class in the Des Plaines Park District Spectrum newsletter. Dates are January 4, 6, 11 & PM. You need a computer with the software installed. Jerry Hug, President Des Plaines Camera Club When asked about their favorite type of photography, the Strikers reply street and portrait photography hold special interests. Street photography shows real people in candid shots in their true environment, says Beth. I like taking pictures of people when they don t realize it. Scott tends to be captivated by a well done portrait. Some photographers can capture the essence of a personality in a single picture. Scott recently bought some radio triggers for flashes and he has plans to start working in both studio and location portraits. Image by Scott Striker Beth and Scott use Canon equipment. Beth likes to Canon SX2015 and Scott works with a Canon Rebel XTi with a mm lens. When Scott edits his work, he uses Photoshop Elements 8. He is planning on looking into other software such as Lightroom and has used Paint Shop Pro in the past. He likes manipulation to enhance traditional aspects of color and design but says pure manipulation just isn t my style. When asked for advice to beginning photographers Scott suggests to study photographs you like, figure out what it is you like about them, and then learn the techniques and skills to create them yourself. 4 Images from Cuba to be shown at Banquet Image by Tom Mulick The annual holiday banquet will feature a slide presentation of images taken by Tom Mulick from his trip to Cuba last spring. Tom had to wait over a year before being granted a humanitarian license to enter a country few Americans have seen in 50 years. While there he spent time with 2 different Cuban photographers who took him to some of their favorite areas. Tom was able to capture a variety of portraits and scenes of Cuban life with their own unique stories. Tom is an experienced traveler, and often travels out of the country with photo workshops. 5 Pointing the way by Jerry Hug Competition Results The Print of the Month for December is Pointing the Way by Jerry Hug. The image was taken on a club photo op to the Jasper Pulaski Wildlife Preserve in Indiana. The December competition was unique in that a pizza party was incorporated into the meeting before the actual contest. Details of competition results can be found on our web site, DesPlainesCameraClub.com Elements Class Members of the Des Plaines Camera Club will give instruction on photo editing using Photoshop Elements 9 software. These are hands on classes and members are required to have a laptop computer with the program installed. Those attending must know how to operate their computer. This class is offered through the Des Plaines Park District and application and payment is made there. Navigating your computer, opening applications, creating folders and saving files to a destination folder are essential to basic computer skills. This course has proven to be very popular and instructive for those members wishing to learn more editing skills as well as using the specific Elements software. IN Focus Newsletter Page 5-7

6 Gallery Showing The Des Plaines Camera Club will have a gallery showing of club member images at the Prospect Heights Public Library during the month of December. The library will have a reception for the display on Tuesday, December 14 th from 7 to 8 pm. The library is located at 12 North Elm Street, Prospect Heights. The Des Plaines Historical Center continues to display club member Stan Kotecki s images of the Methodist Campgrounds through December. IN Focus Newsletter Page 6-7
