1 Publication No 42 July 2010 President s Column July 2010 Hello Everyone, With the cooler weather it is again the ideal time to try those close-up and table top images. The results of our Recipe Book cover competition demonstrated that most members went for a still life type layout. Using Tina s judging commentary, how many of you have re-visited the project and sought to improve or perfect an already great image? Thanks Tina for your help with this simple yet difficult subject. Our presentation by Colin Smith using electronic flash equipment took us from using small single and multiple flash guns, to the larger studio style flash heads. His use of diffusers and reflectors made the flash heads more versatile, and the ability to make the flash intensity greater than the ambient light level is an interesting outdoor exercise. Thanks Colin for your presentation. Talking about electronic flash, visit the Club s web site, sign in and have a browse through the General Photographic Discussion and select the Can we have a flash lecture thread started by Pia Jessen. The club can look at setting up a workshop if members express interest. If you cannot sign on, please let our Secretary, Maureen, know and we will endeavour to get you up and active. The site is going to be used more and more to distribute information about competitions and club activities, so I advise you to visit the site and become familiar with it. We are starting up our local organisation for the Redlands National, sorting out venues and working bee times. Keep an eye out for the rosters and take the opportunity to become involved. 1 P a g e

2 Our Whepstead Manor afternoon was cancelled. We had a shower of rain about 2.25pm. Allen has organized a new date to be announced. A bonus is that we may have access to parts of the interior of this grand building. Well, I ll close for now Cheers Len Maloney A Note from our Program Director Greetings! What an exciting time we are about to experience. Looking back on our programs since the club was formed, I doubt that we have ever had such a wealth of quality Presentations and these should not, repeat should not, be missed. Details follow shortly. Recent Events Tina Dial PSQA judged our Monthly Competition topic "Photo for a Recipe Book" on June 7th. Tina gave us a quality critique of the entries and all present felt that they had gained from her comments. We look forward to her visit to us later this year when she will give a Presentation re her Pet Photography. Colin Smith visited us on June 21st and gave us a most interesting Presentation on Flash Photography. He had prepared a brief hand-out and copies are available at the Information Desk. June 12/13th was the occasion for several members to visit History Alive at Fort Lytton where they took advantage of the many photo opportunities which were readily available. Several others attended the Annual Conference of PSQ at Indooroopilly. 2 P a g e

3 Future Events July 5th Judging of our Monthly club competition by Gordon Dean PSQA - Topic - Open. July 17,18 & 19th Ron Willems FPSNZ AFIAP ARPS AAPS,Internationally recognised Lecturer, Judge and Photographer, will conduct a workshop on 17th & 18th and give a Presentation at our meeting on 19th July. The 17th will feature A/Vs and discussion re taking Digital photographs in the morning session and after lunch, the group will move out to take images and receive practical instruction. The 18th will be an all day workshop on using photoshop to improve your images taken the day before. This workshop and the club Presentation are designed to help members with using their cameras and improving their photography. This is a rare opportunity to learn from a Master of the Craft. Places are limited for the workshop. A few are left and if not filled this week, members of nearby clubs and the public will be invited to participate. Please note that our club meeting on the 19th will be longer than normal. There will be a short break for supper and part 2 of the Presentation, (which is entitled Digital Kiss") will follow. We expect the meeting to conclude by 9.30 / Please note this is a Master Series presentation. July 30th Entries into the 12th Redland National close today. Entry forms may be downloaded from our web-site or are available from the Information desk or Allen Aug 2nd We regret to advise that due to health concerns, Jenni Horsfall is unable to be with us. We are currently arranging a replacement presentation and details of this will be advised shortly. Jenni hopes to visit us later this year or early next year. STOP PRESS We are very pleased to announce that Garry Bradford AFIAP, FAPS SSAPS and Neville Male AFIAP FAPS SSAPS will be our joint Presenters on August 2nd replacing Jenni Horsfall. Garry and Neville are very well known for their photography and have won many awards for Nature and Photo Journalism/Social documentary images. Members will enjoy their Presentation. Aug 16th Professor David Malin will travel from Melbourne to give a Presentation entitled "The Galileo Legacy" Please note this is a Master Series presentation. 3 P a g e

4 Eligibility of Entries We have received several enquiries re the eligibility of some images in Competitions and the following details may assist members in the selection of their entries. Rule 8 applies and the effect of this is as follows:- 1. If you enter a Print/Image in the Redlands Exhibition and it is accepted or better, you cannot enter that Print/Image again in a Redlands Exhibition nor any other version of it be it mono, sepia, infrared etc. 2. However, you may enter that Print/Image in to the Redlands National, but once it has been accepted there, the same restriction applies to re-entering it into another Redlands National. 3. Furthermore, you may enter that Print/Image into any other National but once accepted there, the rule comes into force and it cannot be entered again into that particular National nor any other version of it. Image Books Professional photographer James Chetcuti has made available to our Thorneside Church who are holding a Pet Service on July 10th, a supply of books (valued at $30 each) for sale at $10 each - Proceeds to go to the RSPCA. We have a small supply and they may be inspected at the Library. Whepstead Manor It was with great regret that we have had to defer the Portrait Afternoon at Whepstead Manor. The owner has had to undertake urgent repairs to the stairs and verandahs and Work Place Health and Safety issues arose. We expect to hold this outing on September 5th and this will be confirmed in the near future. We will be able to use the Manor's interior rooms on this occasion Inter-Club Digital Images Competition JUDGING! You're Invited Mark your calendars for Wednesday August 11th to see the judging and scores on the big screen as it happens! This is your opportunity to see how 'Impact Judging' works. All Qld Metropolitan camera clubs affiliated with PSQ have been invited to participate in the: 2010 Inter-Club Digital Projected Images Competition. Our club submission is being selected from the 'set topics' of our monthly club competitions (digital), as well as the recent Redlands Exhibition. If anyone missed out and would like to put forward a submission, you can give me a CD on the next club night (by early July).
