Supper was provided by Brent Randall thank you Brent. Judge Paul Tilley then treated us to a display of his recent printed and digital images. Meeting closed at 10:10pm. Next Meeting Tuesday, 26 th January 2016 November Projected Image Critique- Judged by Paul Tilley At the November meeting Paul Tilley provided very useful feedback on our images. As with many judges, he seemed to enjoy images that showed something different, and he suggested taking images from different angles to give a new or different perspective on the subject; his favourite was to get down low and photograph the subject from a low angle; particularly if the subject was small or low to the ground. He reminded us of the importance of making the subject the main focus of the image, and drew our attention to how the background could distract or detract from an otherwise good subject or image. He noted that, particularly for macro/close up images, cropping tightly can help to focus attention on the main subject, by cropping out unnecessary or distracting light or content; especially any bright spots which would draw the viewer s eye away from the main subject. The question to ask seemed to be does it add anything to the subject or the image? If not then consider taking it out by cropping, or other post processing techniques, or even at the time of exposure by taking the image from a different position/angle. The main thing was to start to notice the background both at time of taking the image and during post processing; and remember the main subject of the image is what should be in focus. Oh and what not to do don t clone a small bit obviously and repeatedly, as the new editor did! (tongue very much in cheek!). Paul s own images showed us the variety of subjects he enjoys photographing. He was happy to share stories of where he took various images and even allowed feedback from Barry Cheeseman on a portrait, which was a great way to give us all more learning. Thanks to Paul for the informative and interesting evening. 2

9 Subject Definition Lines Triptych Creative Abandoned Silhouette No definition just use your imagination. A triptych (pronounced Trip tik), when applied to photography, is a group of three pictures in one image. The subject of a triptych is an important defining characteristic. The pictures should have a common theme. This could be a story, similar compositional elements, colours, similar subject matter anything that draws the pictures together as a group. Images may be arranged beside each other or above and below each other, with or without separation. Creative or experimental photographs display a novel effect because of an unusual combination of objects and /or unusual viewpoint. Photographs in which the images have been modified during or after exposure by using an experimental technique are also eligible in Creative/Experimental sections. The photograph must always have a basic photographic image. Digital manipulation processes may be employed provided the original photograph was exposed by the entrant. Imagination required. A silhouette is defined as an outline that appears dark against a light background. More specifically, it is where your subject is seen as a black shape without detail against a brighter background. Action A picture depicting a person or people doing something in a non-leisurely manner, e.g. sport, an emergency, at play or at work. People/Portrait Photograph of a person or persons that may range from a head study to full body length. This section includes candid photographs and formal portraits Nature Scape Open Nature photography depicts living, untamed animals and uncultivated plants in a natural habitat, geology and the wide diversity of natural phenomena, from insects to icebergs. Photographs of animals which are domesticated, caged or under any form of restraint, as well as photographs of cultivated plants are ineligible. Minimal evidence of humans is acceptable for nature subjects, such as barn owls or storks, adapting to an environment modified by humans, or natural forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves, reclaiming it. The original image must have been taken by the photographer, whatever photographic medium is used. Any manipulation or modification to the original image is limited to minor retouching of blemishes and must not alter the content of the original scene. After satisfying the above requirements, every effort should be made to use the highest level of artistic skill in all nature photographs. The APS definition of Nature is too complex to completely define here. Please go to the website for details: A landscape is a photograph of natural scenery with land and sky based elements displayed in a pictorial fashion. It may include evidence of man, people, animals, even part of the sea provided that none of these additional elements dominate the photograph. A seascape is a photograph of natural coastal scenery, a wave study, or a picture of the open sea, provided always that the sea is the centre of interest of the photograph. People, boats and manmade structures may be present as incidental to the photograph. Any subject that is treated pictorially, embodying the elements of good design, arrangement or composition, which reflects the personal interpretation of the photographer. 9
