I am giving a presentation on Thursday, 27 th March on Basic Digital Photography that I hope will be interesting for attendees. The canvas print donated by Darran Leal is to be raffled. The Guest speakers include: Richard White, William Long, Innes Larkin, Michael Snedic, Earle Bridger, Ben Stoffl & Gary Guest, Mark Rayner and John Lomas. There are workshops planned for the afternoons and also Farm Visits, giving us all lots of photo opportunities and lots to learn over the weekend. There is accommodation available at different centres in Boonah if you wish to stay and make the most of the weekend. Contact John Edwards on regarding some of the units they have reserved at the Boonah Outlook Centre, or if you are like us we are taking our little caravan down and have booked already into the Boonah Caravan park at the showgrounds. Each week the organisers are placing a Newsletter on the web site for you to read regarding each of the presenters. Newsletter 1 is about Michael Snedic, Newsletter 2 is about Richard White. Make sure you return to the site to read all the updates. Sounds a wonderful and exciting weekend away. Critique Guidelines for Architecture Submissions. As a club we will be entering images into the Inter-club Projected Digital Images Competition later this year which is being hosted by the Redlands Camera Club, and one of those topics is Architecture. The Redlands Camera Club have listed some guidelines for this topic, so we are using these for our April Critique. 2
3 Architecture The picture must be of a building intended for human occupation or use. It may be a picture of the exterior or interior and may be a detail of a limited part of a building that displays architectural angles and lines in a dynamic or colourful way (Monochrome allowed). Broad cityscapes that include many buildings will not be accepted. Engineering structures such as bridges, communications towers and motorways will not be accepted. Clydesdale Photography Competition SHOOT A CLYDESDALE!!! (They mean Photograph one ) Saturday 31st May & Sunday 1st June Boonah Showgrounds at 9am. Heavy Horses in Harness and Ploughing Competitions. Plenty of photographic opportunities. Visit the website for full details. Photo must be of a Clydesdale. Please read the following clauses: "All photos entered shall remain the property of the entrant. However the entrant warrants and agrees that SRCS shall have permission to use any photograph submitted, for promotional purposes or any other purpose, and SRCS shall be wholly exempt from copyright limitations. Photos should be submitted in their original format and should not be digitally manipulated or enhanced in any manner." Logan Photo Competition Other Local Events The Logan City Council is currently running a photo competition called Hidden Gems. There are prizes available. More details can be found on the website. The GarterBelts & Gasoline Nostalgia Festival The GarterBelts & Gasoline Festival returns to Tamborine Mountain on May 2-4. Sunday May 4 is a Carnival held at the Tamborine Mountain Showgrounds. The day features a large number of hot rods in a show & shine, vintage caravans & motorbikes and a lot of people dressed up in the 50 s retro style. They are happy to pose for photos too if you ask them. An entry fee applies at the gate. It is a great festival for photographers. There are other activities over the weekend as well include a vintage soap box derby (free event). More details on the website. Scenic Rim Photo Walks Matt Murray from A Muzza Pic photo Lab in Boonah and Scott Warner are running the Scenic Rim Photo Walks each month. The walks go to different locations and Matt & Scott can provide assistance and answer questions on photography and your camera. Cost is $15 which includes a print from the photo lab and refreshments. For more information on the photo walks check out the Facebook page or the blog 3
4 March - Club Critique Subject: Solitary. Warren Veivers was the judge for this month's Critique. The subject was Solitary. Warren said this should indicate a Feeling of being Alone, either visually or something you feel from looking at the photo. It is seclusion. It did not have to be a person, but could be just a corner in a space, as long as it gave that particular feeling of alone or being on its own. Some of the things that Warren really pointed out while making his comments on the photos submitted, was that it was really important to think about the time of day in which you were taking the photo. Many of us tend to take photos around the midday, the worst time usually for photography as it takes away from the best type of natural lighting you can get for your photos. The early morning and late afternoon when the Sun is not so harsh and you get those warm glowing colours and shadows are the best times. Another idea he had was to use the Gradient Tool to create a Vignette in a photo, this can help to distract from the edges and it can be done quite softly so as not to be too noticeable. After the judging Warren presented a slideshow of some of his photography. His speciality is Landscapes and there were some spectacular shots done in both colour and monochrome. I must admit, I would not like to be a judge, the images I see displayed from our club are very good. 1st: Brent Randall The Lone Surfer 4

8 2nd: Tony Spies 3rd: Bob Hall Extra Bits Reminder: Due to the Easter and Anzac Day holidays, the April meeting has been changed to the fifth Tuesday, 29th April. In April, we will again have a visit from Les Harden from HighCove. Les will bring along Educational and Photographic Supplies, these also included lots of wonderful books last time. So be sure to come along in April. It has been decided that photos now up to 2 years since first taken can be submitted for judging. But it is highly encouraged that you continue to take photos each month to keep up your skills and make use of those lovely camera's you have. Digital Art is now called Altered Reality and can also be included in your Enlargements. To assist Judges when they are scoring your images, they will now be advised of what Grading you are currently in. eg. either A, AB or B. Please remember to wear your name badges when you come to the meetings, that way the new members will get to know who you are. The minutes of the meetings are to be available on the website. This is to encourage members to visit the site more often. There is a lot to see and read there, including the Library catalogue. We have some wonderful books in our Library and they are just crying out to be read. 8
9 Book Review The Photoshop Elements 11 Book for digital photographers by Scott Kelby & Matt Kloskowski I purchased this book myself last year when Les Harden from Highcove came to our club meeting. I had just upgraded my version of Photoshop Elements from Version 8 to 11 and had noticed quite a big difference. If you are anything like me, I need a book to show me with pictures and step by step instructions on how to change things in Photoshop or any other photographic program. I prefer to do as much as I can in Camera when taking my shot, but as the judges say - just a little bit here and a bit there can sometimes make a world of difference. The book last year cost $38, but I have seen on the internet around the $55 mark. It has 12 chapters, from talking about RAW, How to Resize and Crop your photos, Editing using the Quick, Guided and Expert Modes, Layers, Retouching, Cloning, and Chapter 6 on Fixing Common Little Problems. - I like this chapter especially. Opening up Shadow areas that are too dark; Fixing areas that are Too Bright; adding contrast to Cloudy Skies and the last Chapter all about Printing to making sure you get the best print of that great photo you have just taken. A very simple and easy to follow section regarding "When Your Subject is Too Dark", 5 simple steps to take. The person that is in the foreground is too dark and with quite a bit of shadow on him, and the instructions take you from this scene to still having the lovely background that you had, but the person is now correctly exposed and you can see the face clearly. Full of colour pictures, showing all the steps including what you actually do in Layers, Levels etc, along with step by step written easy to understand commands. It even has all the "Mac" commands if you are using the Mac Version. Ever want to know how to cut out that person or object and place it into another photo for your Altered Reality photos. And know how to cut around the hair correctly so that you get it all and not bits of the background as well; well then this book tells and shows you how to do it. With 425 pages and a very good index, and great pictures showing you before and after shots and full details on just "How to Do It", this book is a must have if you are using Photoshop Elements. Ailsa. If you would like to submit some articles, ideas and any information into the next newsletter, I would be very interested to hear from you. 9
