These will be low level walks but terrain may be rough in places with no discernible path and muddy or rocky sections. Partners are very welcome and can make use of the hotel facilities during the day or visit the attractions around Dunkeld. They are also welcome to join the group table for dinner or alternatively you may prefer dine to alone. OVERVIEW This course is ideally suited to photographers who already have a working knowledge of photography and are familiar with the basic functions of their cameras such as exposure, metering modes, and the relationship between shutter speed and aperture. The brand and model of your camera is of secondary importance to your own familiarity with its menus and functions. During the course of the workshop, my aim is to raise your knowledge and skills and to introduce you to new ways of thinking about photography. During the weekend we will cover a variety of tutorials, which will include the following topics: UNDERSTANDING LIGHT CREATIVE COMPOSITION FORMATS IMAGE SHARPNESS APERTURE, SHUTTER SPEEDS, ISO THE IMPORTANCE OF TRIPODS USING CAMERA RAW AND JPEG IMAGE PROCESSING AND WORKFLOW FILTRATION We will work around Dunkeld on Saturday afternoon where Colin will provide one-to one tuition and demostrations and then return to the hotel to look at the days results. On Sunday afternoon we will photograph in and around the Hermitage where the workshop will conclude at 4.00pm. 4 RECOMMENDED PERSONAL EQUIPMENT The ability to respond to Scotland s changeable weather patterns with appropriate clothing will enhance your enjoyment. Most items are common sense and the key is to bring comfortable clothing, which will maintain your body temperature in a variety of weather conditions. If you are at all susceptible to the cold, a down jacket or windproof fleece is the most effective way to keep warm and there may be occasions when one is desirable. Lightweight boots, or trainers. Waterproof jacket and trousers. Hat for sun protection or for warmth. Casual clothes for evening wear. Personal wash kit (towels are supplied). Optional: sun glasses, sunscreen, lip salve, blister kit Binoculars. PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT Photographic equipment is based on individual preferences, budget and experience and the following information is offered simply as a recommendation. Carrying equipment for every eventuality is also counter-intuitive and is likely to result in your experience being eclipsed by the weight of your camera bag. Cameras It is essential that you bring a camera that is already familiar to you. Whether it is a 35mm DSLR or a Micro system is unimportant, what is important is that you know your way around your own camera and understand what its functions are. Lenses The most versatile combination for travel shooting is to have two zoom lenses such as a 24-70mm and a mm - these two lenses cover a range of focal lengths between mm and will account for 95% of your images. These focal lengths are for a full frame sensor, so if your camera has a smaller sensor you would want the equivalent focal lengths. Although not essential, a 100mm Macro lens opens up a wider range of opportunities. Filters The most useful filters in digital photography are graduated neutral density filters. These compensate for the inadequate dynamic range of DSLR sensors and prevent bright areas, such as skies from burning out. Lee Filters produce an excellent range and the 0.6 soft grad is the most useful. A polarising filter may also be useful. Storage Ensure that you have adequate memory cards and a means of backing up your work, either on a supplementary hard drive or laptop. Laptop A laptop will allow you to see what you ve shot each day and will facilitate critique sessions. Alternatively, an ipad offers a smaller, lighter solution which is more suited to travel. Camera bag Make sure you bring a camera bag, which allows you to comfortably carry your equipment over rugged terrain. Backpacks such as those made by Lowepro distribute the weight between your shoulders and hips and feature an all-weather cover giving protection against rain and snow. Tripod A tripod is an essential piece of equipment for all outdoor photographers, allowing camera settings to be used that would otherwise be impossible. A wide range to models to suit most needs are available from Manfrotto and Gitzo. For more advanced photographers, carbon fibre tripods, offer a lighter weight solution but essentially do the same job as those made from aluminium. Cable release Again essential equipment which eradicates camera shake on long exposures. Many cameras manufacturers now offer a dedicated remote control. Spare batteries Batteries can be charged at our accomodation, however it is makes sense to bring along a spare battery to ensure that you maximise your opportunities of taking photographs. Lens cloth A lens cloth is useful for removing rain or sea spray if it finds its way onto a lens.
