The Workshop A six day intensive staying at the famous Carrington Hotel in Katoomba in the World Heritage Blue Mountains, one of Australia s most beautiful and diverse landscapes.

4 The Workshop A six day intensive staying at the famous Carrington Hotel in Katoomba in the World Heritage Blue Mountains, one of Australia s most beautiful and diverse landscapes. The workshop is designed for people with an openness to reimagine their photography practice in both the taking and the post production stages. It is about realising vision, composing a story and reflecting the emotion of the image before them. Your Mentor Ricardo da Cunha is a photographer with an expansive view of the nature of photography. While not ignoring technical aspects, he will explore the creative and exploratory nature of the workshop. Ricardo approaches photography from a unique perspective, that of a constructed universe in which he seeks space and order. It begs the question, is that imagined world any less real or valid than a literal depiction of landscape? The Days Practice Each day will feature early morning and late afternoon photographic explorations to work in various locations within the made and natural landscapes of the Blue Mountains. A permanent workspace will be established in the Library at the Carrington Hotel where classes, discussions and post-editing will take place. As well as the formal topics outlines below, RICARDO WILL WORK WITH YOU ON YOUR IMAGES IN POST PRODUCTION. How to get there Our bus will pickup in Sydney on the morning of Saturday 16th September at 9am - place to be arranged - and returned to Sydney around 1 pm on the Friday 22 September. You are welcome to drive to the Carrington Hotel although you will miss some photographic stops on the way up to Katoomba.

5 The Food All cooked breakfasts will be taken in the beautiful Carrington restaurant. Otherwise participants can enjoy lunch and dinner the wonderful cafes within walking distance of the Carrington Hotel. Camera equipment Camera (check your baggage allowance with your airline/travel agent) Tripod with quick release plate Lenses (Preferably a standard zoom, wide angle and telephoto lens) Battery and chargers Shutter cable release Polarising lter and ND lters Laptop computer with Photoshop or Lightroom External backup drives and/or memory cards for storage. If you are flying we also recommend that you pack your camera equipment as your hand luggage as much as possible so that if the checked-in baggage is lost or delayed at least you can start photographing as soon as you arrive. Note: Please contact us if you want to discuss equipment for this trip. Clothing The Blue Mountains is an environment with diverse weather conditions. So we can still get out no matter what you are advised to plan for rain, beautiful warm days and the last vestiges of winter. In other words prepare for everything. So bring warm gear, summer gear, wet weather gear for the field trips and casual gear for time spent at the Carrington Hotel.

6 FORMAL TOPICS Session Topic: Forget the F stops and just get out there and shoot! Session Length: Approximate 1 hour Too many photographers get caught-up in the technical aspects of photography and it can act as a barrier for simply getting out there and shooting. Many of us can focus on trying to produce a technically perfect image however the power of an image lies within the emotional content of it and the impact that can have on the viewer. This session encourages us to try and break free from all of technical aspects and free us to get out more often, and in doing so, produce more emotionally moving imagery. Session Topic: Simplifying your capture workflow Session Length: Approximate 1 hour In this session we build on the previous session by demystifying the capture workflow and treating the camera as exactly what it is; a black box with a hole in it. We provide recommended settings for shooting in different situations and environments so that you can focus more attention on "seeing" and capturing more powerful and moving imagery. Session Topic: Composition, Light and Subject Session Length: Approximate 2 hours The three most important ingredients in creating an image. We'll explore each in length in this session and use many powerful illustrative examples. Session Topic: Creating unique photography by creating authentic photography Session Length: Approximate 2 hours The only way to create authentic photography is by creating images that accurately record the reactions of your personality to the world around you. In this session we go on an insightful exploration of self-awareness and where we focus ourselves before we focus our cameras. In doing so we have the power to find our authentic vision, and as a byproduct of doing this, a unique style will develop. This session is all about empowering you to express the unique individual that you are and your message thru your art and to not try to be anyone else. Critique session

7 Session Topic: Editing. Why it should begin before you even hit the shutter Session Length: Approximate 2 hours In this session we discuss why editing your work should not be simply thought of as processing work that you typically perform after you capture an image. Rather, editing should be viewed as all of the considered choices that you make during the planning, capturing, processing and presenting of your work. And fueling and guiding all of these considered choices is your vision. Critique session Session Topic: Fueling your creativity by imposing constraints Session Length: Approximate 1 hour One proven way to ignite your imagination is to impose constraints when out shooting. Forcing your mind to work and develop ideas in this way awakens and triggers your inner dormant imagination. In this session we will provide a number of excellent exercises that we highly recommend you regularly adopt in your photography. Session Topic: How to produce more interesting images Session Length: Approximate 1 hour Create deeper and more powerful images by first developing deeper connections with your subjects and observing and listening to the stories and emotions of the people and land surrounding you. Then encapsulate this and transcend it thru your images. Critique session Session Topic: Exploring the images and philosophies of influential photographers and interpreting lessons from them Session Length: Approximate 2 hours A great source of inspiration can be found from studying the work of other photographers and where we also learn a lot to incorporate into our own photography to better realize our unique vision.

8 Session Topic: Some words on my own journey by Ricardo Da Cunha Session Length: Approximate 1 hour Overview of session: In another insightful session, Ricardo Da Cunha shares with us his own personal journey in photography/art so far and what he has learned and what's helped him the most. Session Topic: Post Production workflow and techniques Session Length: Approximate 4 hours A photography workshop wouldn't be complete without covering a number of proven techniques to get the full potential out of your images. In this hands-on session you'll receive proven workflows and techniques that have been used by our own Australian Professional Landscape Photographer of the Year, Ricardo Da Cunha. Revision and post-production studio work. Presentation of final images to colleagues. The Course The Beyond Photography Residency will be designed to challenge and invigorate your photography. The notion of a right way and a wrong way to take images will have no part in the workshop. You will not be coming to simply learn the tricks of the professionals but rather to learn what technique to utilise for a specific shot. Technique is the servant of the person in front of the camera, not its master. The history of photography will be explored as Ricardo shows some of his influences from the great photographers of the past and present. Photography as self-expression and as art will be a constant theme. There is a place for photography to be literal representation of landscape, but there is equally a place for images, much like expressionism and impressionism, to be an exploration of emotion and narrative. Beyond Photography will be an intense experience. Over six days and night you will be immersed in a beautiful place, both in your accomodation at the Carrington Hotel, in your studio space in the historic library and in the magnificent and mystical landscape of the Blue Mountains.

9 THE BLUE MOUNTAINS - photos by Raymond Hawkins. The Blue Mountains is a wonderland of extraordinary landscapes, arguably Australia s most photogenic environment. It is amongst its sheer valleys, bizarre ironstone outcrops, magnificent horizons and profoundly beautiful streams, waterfalls and rainforests that we will take the knowledge of the tutorials each day.

10 THE TEAM RICARDO DA CUNHA I m on a journey in trying to find my voice in photography. My images aim to portray a world that I seek; one that is simple and devoid of the noise that increasingly dominates our complicated lives. My images are often not true interpretations of what the camera sees but more importantly they are true interpretations of what I felt. To me this is more important as it helps enable the photographer to become a part of the photograph. My aim is to produce images with a vision to inspire people to simplify their lives and appreciate the very few things that truly matter. Therefore my images portray a more simplistic style. Ultimately I want to create honest, authentic and personally meaningful images that reflect who I am. RAYMOND HAWKINS aka The Electronic Swagman has operated eclectic tours all over Australia for decades. He is a published author, a photographer and has been the subject of Radio National and ABC Television documentaries. Raymond operated a walking company in the Blue Mountains for over a decade and knows its secret places as only a walker can.

It is situated right in the heart of Katoomba and is an art deco masterpiece.

11 THE CARRINGTON HOTEL The Carrington Hotel is one of Australia's most iconic hotels. It is situated right in the heart of Katoomba and is an art deco masterpiece. Our daily tutorials will be held in the old library, a gorgeous space and you will love disappearing into its quirky spaces.
