1 Winter 2018 Class Schedule Class: Learn-to-Knit Basics Cost: $65 Three Sessions Available Dates/Time: Session 1 - Sat. mornings, Jan. 20, 27 & Feb. 3 from 9:00-11:00 am (Aldona Shumway) Session 2 - Fri. mornings, Jan. 26, Feb. 2 & 9 from 9:30-11:30 am (Heather Harden) Session 3 - Wed. evenings, Feb. 28, March 7 & 14 from 6:00-8:00 pm (Heather Harden) Duration: 3 classes, each class is 2 hours Skills Learned: In this class you will learn how to do a long-tail cast-on, knit, purl, do ribbing and learn to recognize stitches and bind-off. In addition you ll learn increases and decreases and all the knitting basics to get you started. At the end of the class you ll receive patterns for some simple projects for you to continue practicing on your own. Prerequisites: None Included: Needles, yarn, Handi-Tool, handouts Additional Info: Class will have homework Instructors: Heather Harden & Aldona Shumway KNITTING BASICS AND SKILL BUILDING Class: Basic Hat Cost: $35* Dates/Time: Wednesday mornings, January 17 & 24 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm Skills Learned: Learn to knit in the round on circular and double-pointed needles, decrease for crown, read a pattern, pattern repeats and using markers for repeats. Prerequisites: Learn-to-Knit Basics or MUST be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off Included: Pattern, stitch marker Additional Info: Bring your own size 7 16 circular and double-pointed needles. Instructor: Robin Oxenhorn Class: Basic Socks Cost: $45 Dates/Time: Sunday mornings, February 4 & 11 from 9:00-11:00 am Skills Learned: In this class you ll knit one baby sock to learn all the aspects of sock knitting including turning a heel and the Kitchener stitch to close the toe. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off, MUST have experience knitting in the round on double-pointed needles Included: Double-pointed needles, yarn, stitch holder, pattern Instructor: Robin Oxenhorn Class: Basic Cables Cost: $45 Dates/Time: Thursday mornings, January 18 & 25 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm Skills Learned: You will learn several cable techniques including ropes, braids and traveling cables by knitting swatches in class. In addition, you will learn to read a cable chart, use a cable needle and how to select appropriate yarn for your cable projects. 2 Class: Basic Mittens Cost: $55 Dates/Time: Wednesday evenings, January 31 & Feb. 7 from 5:30-7:30 pm Skills Learned: Learn how to make a basic mitten on double-pointed needles in a worsted weight wool. You ll learn you how to increase for a thumb gusset, how to make your thumb and a simple decrease to finish both thumb and the mitt. Think warm and cozy! Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently do a long-tail cast-on, join in the round, knit and purl, knitting in the round on double-pointed needles Included: Double-point needles, yarn, stitch holder, pattern Instructor: Robin Oxenhorn Class: Basics of Magic Loop Cost: $30 Dates/Time: Session 1 - Thursday evening, January 25 from 6:30-8:30 pm Session 2 - Saturday morning, February 10 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm Skills Learned: Make an adorable cup cozy using magic loop, a technique that uses one long needle to knit in the round instead of double-pointed needles. Magic loop can be used to make socks, sleeves and hats and is a great skill to have in your toolbox. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently do a long-tail cast-on, knit, purl, bind-off, increase, decrease and be familiar with knitting in the round Included: Yarn and materials to make project, pattern Additional Info: Bring your own 32 or longer circular needle US size 4, Handi Tool, stitch markers, tapestry needle (not included, but available for purchase) Instructor: Heather Harden Class: Basic Finishing Stitches Cost: $25 Dates/Time: Session 1 - Monday morning, February 12 from 9:30-11:30 am Session 2 - Saturday morning, March 10 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm Skills Learned: Learn various techniques to finish your projects. You ll knit 6 swatches made from your stash yarn and bring to class to learn the Kitchener, mattress and whip stitches and a three-needle bind-off. Directions for swatches will be provided upon registration. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently cast on, knit, purl and bind-off Additional Info: Before class, knit 3 swatches and bring with you to class (see pattern provided), bring your own 24 or 32 circular needles US size 8, Handi Tool (not included but available for purchase) Instructor: Heather Harden Class: Knitting Tips & Tricks: Reading Patterns Cost: $25 Dates/Time: Tuesday evening, January 30 from 5:30-7:30 pm Description: Sometimes following a pattern can frustrating because every designer does it a bit differently. In this class, you will learn to knit according to a pattern and all that entails. Learn some basics that will help you understand patterns including materials, glossary, special terms, as well as reading charts for lace, cables and colorwork. You ll walk through reallife examples of good and bad patterns and learn some tips to avoid losing your place. If you ve had trouble with a particular pattern, bring it along for discussion. 3 Class: Knitting Tips & Tricks: Troubleshooting Mistakes Cost: $25 Dates/Time: Tuesday evening, February 6 from 5:30-7:30 pm Description: Does your heart sink when you accidentally pull stitches off of your knitting needle? In this class, you will learn to put those stitches back on the needle correctly as well as recognize and fix small errors such as twisted and dropped stitches. You will also learn how to undo (a.k.a. tink ) your knitting in order to make a correction. Prerequisites: MUST be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off Additional Info: Bring your own Handi-Tool (not included but available for purchase) There will be homework prior to class, directions will be sent upon registration. Prerequisites: None Included: Hook, yarn, handouts Instructors: Mae Lambert Class: Advanced Beginner Crochet Cost: $55 Dates/Time: Session 1 - Sunday afternoons, January 21 & 28 from 2:00-4:00 pm Session 2 - Saturday afternoon, March 17 & 24 from 3:00-5:00 pm Skills Learned: In this class you will continue to expand your crochet knowledge. You ll learn more sophisticated stitches such as the half double crochet, triple crochet, cluster stitch and magic ring and practice them in class. Prerequisites: Learn-to-Crochet Basics or equivalent Included: Hook, yarn, handouts Instructors: Mae Lambert CROCHETING BASICS AND PROJECTS Class: Advanced Crochet Edging for Knitters Cost: $35 Dates/Time: Sunday afternoon, March 11 from 2:00-4:00 pm Duration: 1 class, 2 hours long Skills Learned: Adding a crochet edge to your knitting can add a pop of color, a decorative splash or some barely-there reinforcement. In this class you ll learn some more advanced edging techniques such as the crab stitch, block stitch and polka dot stitch to take your knitted projects to the next level. You will knit swatches at home then crochet edges on them in class. Prerequisites: Beginning crochet or the equivalent Included: Handouts Additional Info: Bring your own size G crochet hook and worsted weight yarn in a variety of colors for edging (not incuded but available for purchase). 4 Class: Crochet Go Green Market Bag Cost: $50 Dates/Time: Sunday afternoons, February 4 & 11 from 1:00-3:00 pm Skills Learned: Crochet this adorable, colorful and very useful market bag while learning the treble crochet V stitch. This is a fun way to expand your crocheting knowledge and add some skills to your toolbox. You ll get two skeins of Malabrigo yarn, one will be a beautiful hand-dyed variegated and one will be a contrasting solid to pair together in this timeless design. Take your crocheting to the next level while making a great gift for someone special, maybe yourself! In this class you ll learn to read a basic written and diagram pattern, crochet terms and keys and the difference between US and UK patterns. This is a crucial and very helpful step on your way to becoming an accomplished crocheter. Prerequisites: Some crochet helpful, but not mandatory Included: Handouts and a pattern Instructor: Mae Lambert MORE ADVANCED KNITTING TECHNIQUES AND PROJECTS Class: Beginning Brioche Cost: $55 Dates/Time: Session 1 - Tuesday mornings, January 23 & 30 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm Session 2 - Saturday afternoon, February 10 & 17 from 1:00-3:00 pm Skills Learned: Learn the basics of two-color brioche knitting and make a brioche hat or cowl. Brioche knitting creates a double layered fabric that is both warm and visually interesting. 5 Class: Advanced Brioche Hat Cost: $65 Dates/Time: Tuesday mornings, February 6 & 13 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm Skills Learned: Frost on Leaves, a wonderful brioche hat, allows you to expand and challenge your brioche skills, learn a new cast-on, learn several increase and decrease stitches, and practice using life lines. Prerequisites: Must have taken Beginning Brioche or equivalent and must be competent to independently do a long-tail cast-on, knit and purl Included: Yarn, pattern Additional Info: Bring 16 or 20 circular with 3.5 tips and double-point US size 5 needles (not included, but available for purchase) Class: Advanced Brioche Scarf Cost: $80 Dates/Time: Saturday afternoons, January 20 & 27 from 1:00-3:00 pm Skills Learned: The Hosta Brioche Scarf is a beautiful brioche project that allows you to expand and challenge your brioche skills, learn several increase and decrease stitches as well as practice using life lines and brioche charts. Prerequisites: Must have taken Beginning Brioche or equivalent and must be competent to independently do a long-tail cast-on, knit and purl Included: Yarn, pattern Additional Info: Bring 24 circular US size 6, a size D or F crochet hook or Handi-Tool (not included but available for purchase) Class: Sweater Boot Camp Cost: $75* Dates/Time: Saturday mornings, February 17, March 3 & 17, April 14 from 9:00-11:00 am Duration: 4 classes, each class is 2 hours Skills Learned: Have you always wanted to make a sweater but haven t had the confidence to jump in? Or have you thrown up your hands in frustration when a sweater you made didn t fit correctly? This class may be just what you need. Mother of Purl is now offering Amy Herzog s Custom Fit Program in the shop (see pg. 7 for more information on the Custom Fit Program). This program allows you to choose from Amy s patterns (there s over 80 of them) and any yarn, combined with your specific measurements and gauge to generate a customized pattern just for you. In this class you will learn how to use the Custom Fit Program to create a sweater that fits you! First we ll take a detailed set of your measurements and help you choose your pattern and yarn (cost of yarn is not included in the class price). Then we ll show you how to make a high-quality swatch and determine your unique gauge, a must for accurate sizing. The Custom Fit system will do all the math and generate a personalized sweater pattern based on your exact measurements and gauge. Finally, you ll begin knitting your sweater with the instructor helping you through the whole project. *Note: Yarn is not included in the class price, but you will receive a 20% class discount for your yarn purchase. Prerequisites: Must be an intermediate knitter and be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off. Not sure if you re qualified? This is a great way to create two socks that are the same and avoid the one-sock knitting problem. When you knit two-at-a-time, when you re done you re done! Prerequisites: For intermediate knitters who have knit a pair of socks previously, MUST be competent to independently cast on, knit and purl Included: 1 skein sock yarn, needles, pattern Additional Info: Class will have homework Class: Mobius Cowl Cost: $35 Dates/Time: Thursday evening, February 1 from 5:00-7:00 pm Duration: One 2-hour class Skills Learned: A mobius cowl includes a half twist giving this cowl a unique look. In this class you ll learn this interesting cast-on method, linen stitch and make a small, colorful cowl with a twist! Prerequisites: You MUST be competent to independently cast on, knit, purl and bind-off. Included: 1 skein Noro Silk Garden yarn in a color of your choice, pattern Additional Info: Bring your own 40 circular size 9 needles and a stitch marker (not included but available for purchase) Class: Riblet Shawlette Cost: $45 Dates/Time: Wednesday morning, March 14 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm Skills Learned: This is a great first small shawl project which will teach you how to start from just a few stitches and, by using increases and decreases, create a gracefully shaped shawlette. In addition you ll learn how to make a very crisp-looking i-cord edge. This class will get you started on your project, a simple, yet elegant, asymmetrical shawlette.
