1 Greetings! Jimmy Beans Wool Classes- March 2014 We welcome all levels of knitters, crocheters, weavers, & spinners to join us in the shop for classes! If you are an out-of-town customer visiting the area, please feel free to attend any of our classes, walk-in sessions or our JBW Knit Nights on the fourth Thursday evening of each month! We would love to include you! Ready to start a new year of fun learning!? We have some exciting new classes! We will continue teaching the same general subjects on the same day each month and in the same time slot! This month we're changing up a couple of classes so please look at the calendar carefully! We've added Beginning Crochet & Knitting project classes, a Doll & Toy class and a two session Beginning Cricket Loom Weaving Workshop!!! Please register by end of the day prior to the class. You may register over the phone or in person. Payment is due at registration. We can take credit cards over the phone. All classes are $25 per person for 2 hours unless otherwise indicated. Classes without preregistered students are subject to cancellation. Please be considerate of your classmates! Purchase and prepare ALL materials BEFORE class so you are fully prepared at the scheduled start time. Classes begin promptly. Please ask and we will be happy to put you in contact with the appropriate teacher. All class arrangements, including location and price will be negotiated between you and the teacher. Children's classes: Children require more one-on-one help to be successful in learning fiber arts. For this reason, unless a child is particularly adept and can keep up in an adult group class, we will put you into contact with a teacher who can help your child learn. We will be scheduling classes for children during the summer. Free Drop-in Help Sessions: Free-walk-in help times: - Tuesday: From 11 am until 1 pm - Thursday: From 11am until 1pm - Sunday: From 2pm until 4pm During these times we will have an instructor on hand to give you their full attention! These sessions are meant for project help and general instruction. This is not a good time for beginners, as there are many different requests that the teacher needs to address and a beginner will not get the attention needed to be really successful. If you are stuck on a project, need help getting a project started, mistakes fixed, have confusions about a pattern, need moral support, or whatever - bring your project! No RSVP needed, just show up! (Note: We are always happy to help at anytime. Outside of these scheduled, free walk-in hours our staff may need to be helping other customers while they are also helping you with your project. Please be patient and we'll do our very best for you! And please remember we need to eat, too. ) 1

2 Class materials and prerequisites: Materials are not included in the price for the classes unless specifically stated otherwise. Please purchase ALL materials and have yarn wound into balls BEFORE class start time. Classes start promptly at the scheduled time. Beginning Crochet Skills 1 st Saturday of each month - Learn all the basic skills of crochet from how to tension the yarn through the 6 basic stitches and if time allows, how to crochet in the round. Light colored worsted weight wool yarn, not superwash.** Crochet hook in size G, 7, or H. **Note: If you have a sensitivity to wool, then a synthetic or cotton will work as long as it isn't splitty. Please ask the retail staff to help you select an appropriate yarn. Your yarn will need to be in a skein or ball before you can knit or crochet. The retail staff will be happy to wind a hank into a ball for you before the class. No prerequisites All Things Socks! This is an ongoing workshop in which you are taken through the sock knitting process step-by-step at your own pace. In this class you will learn the structure of a sock, how to read sock patterns, how to knit socks cuff down and toe up, and all the different needle configurations used to knit socks. We will also learn how to knit them one at a time and two at at time. If this is your first sock, we recommend knitting a worsted weight sock. If skinny yarn does not intimidate you, then you may choose fingering weight socks yds of worsted weight yarn OR 400 yds of fingering weight yarn US #5 or #6 needles for worsted weight or US #1 or #2 for fingering weight A basic sock pattern for the yarn weight you've chosen (we sell several) Prerequisites: How to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. You will learn joining in the round, increases and decreases, among other skills. Knitting Ed. 1 st Wednesday each month - This month Reading Patterns You'll be taken through the general basics of how knitting & crochet patterns are written and what certain phrases that are frequently seen in patterns mean. We'll go over the abbreviations commonly found in knitting and crochet patterns plus the confusing differences between American and British English. And we'll also go over the basics of how to read charts. Selection of patterns to read (optional) Good glasses if you need them or pencil Prerequisites: None 2

3 101 Beginning Knitting Skills - Learn the basic skills of knitting casting on, making knit stitches, making purl stitches, alternating between knits & purls, stockinette stitch, garter stitch and binding off. Light colored worsted weight wool yarn, not superwash.** Straight or 24 circular needles in size US 7 or 8. Bamboo or wood is recommended as metal needles are slippery and can cause frustration for beginners. **Note: If you have a sensitivity to wool, then a synthetic or cotton will work as well as long as it isn't splitty. Please ask the retail staff to help you select an appropriate yarn. Your yarn will need to be in a skein or ball before you can knit or crochet. The retail staff will be happy to wind a hank into a ball for you before the class. No prerequisites Dolls & Toys - 2 nd Saturday each month - This month we will be knitting Poppy by Ysolda Teagues. This pattern is from the book Whimsical Little Knits. It is also available for purchase as an individual pattern. Please ask the retail staff about this pattern. You will learn to duplicate stitch and how to do a double sided cast on if you don't already how. This is a delightfully ingenious pattern that is knit all in one piece from the top down, with no seaming required. Poppy pattern by Ysolda Teague (available on ravelry.com. We can help you purchase this pattern the store.) 130 yds of dk or worsted weight yarn in your choice of skin tone color. 77 yds dk or worsted weight yarn in your choice for shoes, dress & barrettes 65 yds of dk or worsted weight yarn in your choice of hair color. 3 mm double points or circular needle for your favorite method of knitting in the round. Toy stuffing (fiber fill) 2-1/2 buttons or yarn to embroider eyes & mouth Waste yarn Scrap cardboard Prerequisites: This is an advanced beginner level project. You need to know how to m1r, m1l, ssk, and k2tog. Beginning Crochet Project Now that you've learned the basic crochet stitches it's time to make something! This month's project is the Stitch Mountain Crocheted Headband found on our free pattern page! This is fun pattern to start of your crocheting career! You'll learn how to read a written crochet pattern and perform so interesting variations of the basics you already have learned! 1 skein of Red Heart Boutique Midnight (one skein makes two headband) Crochet hook 5mm [US H-8] Prerequisites: Beginning crochet or equivalent. Stitches we will be using are chain, single crochet, double crochet & half double crochet. You will learn how to do a crochet decrease. 3

4 Intermediate Knitting Skills - 3 rd Saturday each month Advance your knitting skills beyond the basics! Start to use more advanced techniques and design elements! This month The Plain Brioche Stitch! Learn this most basic of brioche stitches for creating interesting textures in one color. This is the stitch that unlocks the gateway to lots more interesting textures and color variations in you knitting! Solid color worsted weight yarn in a light to medium color Needles appropriate for you yarn weight plus 1 a size or two larger for casting on loosely Smooth small gauge yarn or dental floss for lifelines Darning or tapestry needle Prerequisites: Must have basic knitting skills and have developed a reasonably good tension minimum skills needed are: long tail cast on, knit, purl, and yarn over. 102 Beginning Knitting - Beyond Knit & Purl - 3 rd Saturday each month- You've learned how to cast on, knit, purl, alternate knitting & purling and bind off. Now you would like to make something beyond simple scarves! This is the prefect class to take you to the next step! Learn increases, decreases, joining in the round... whatever you would like to learn next on your knitting journey! Pattern of your choice (optional) Yarn of your choice Needle appropriate for the size yarn and project Prerequisites: Beginning Knitting Skills classes, must know how cast on, knit, purl, alternate between knit & purl and bind off. Stitch Pattern of the Month - 3 rd Wednesday each month This Month you'll learn the Basketweave Stitch. Each month will feature a different stitch pattern for you to learn, practice and make either a 10 sampler square that can be assembled into an afghan or individual washcloths. Dk or worsted weight yarn in wool or cotton Straight or circular knitting needle appropriate to the weight of yarn Prerequisites: Basic knitting skills cast on, knit, purl & bind off All Things Spinning 4 th Saturday each month - Learn how to spin yarn with drop spindles and/or wheels. Learn basic care and feeding of your wheel, about fibers and fiber preparation. On going students can learn variations on drafting, plying, etc... Drop Spindle and/or spinning wheel Spinning fibers (a small quantity is available to taste ) If you have them, you may bring hand cards and other spinning-related equipment Oil for your wheel 4

5 Top Down Sweater Workshop 4 th Saturday each month This is an ongoing workshop where you are taken step-by-step through the top down sweater knitting process at your own pace. In this class you will learn the structure of a sweater, how to read top down patterns, how to cast on stitches in the middle of a project, and how to adjust the pattern to give a custom fit, among other skills. Pattern of your choice (we have many to choose from! I often recommend Knitting Pure & Simple patterns) Materials & needles listed for the pattern you've chosen Prerequisites: Beginning Knitting Beyond Knit & Purl. Must know how to cast on, knit & purl. Knowledge of joining in the round and increases is helpful but can be learned with this project. Beginning Knitting Project 4 th Wednesday each month You've completed 101 Beginning Knitting or equivalent and know how to knit & purl! Now you are ready to make your first project! We'll be knitting the Stitch Mountain Simple Knit Cowl found on our free pattern page. 2 skeins of Red Heart Boutique Treasure US 10.5 (6.5mm) straight or circular needles Prerequisite: You must know how to cast on, knit, purl and alternate between knit & purl in the same row. Special this month! Cricket Loom Weaving Workshop day Two session on Saturday March 29 th! In the morning session we'll go over the parts of the loom, basic vocabulary, and how to warp your loom! In the afternoon session we'll get started weaving! Assembled Schacht Cricket Loom or other similar rigid heddle loom Scissors Cardboard tube from paper towels or brown paper bag Yarn (the Cricket comes with yarn in the box) Please bring EVERYTHING that came in your Cricket loom box, especially the Assembly & Weaving Instruction booklet Books you may find helpful: Hands on Rigid Heddle Weaving by Betty Linn Davenport, Learning to Weave by Deborah Chandler, The Weavers Idea Book by Interweave Press Prerequisites: You must purchase and assemble your loom before class begins!
