1 2017 Iowa Sheep & Wool Festival Class Descriptions June 17 18, 2017 Pay Class Fees online at: to register for class. Material Fees to be paid to instructor at time of class. There will be a $5/weekend pass payable upon entering festival. Saturday All Day Classes # Beginning Crochet - Dawn Ask Martin Saturday 9 a.m. 4 p.m. Learn the basics of crochet from chain to treble stitches, and make a swatch portfolio for future reference. Symbols and abbreviations in pattern reading will also be covered. Students will make small swatches of various stitches for their portfolios. Samples of various stitch patterns will be furnished, and students are encouraged to combine the newly learned stitches and make rectangular shaped projects such as a dish cloth, hot pad, headband, place mat, or scarf. Worsted weight yarn, size G or H hook, patterns and instructional handouts and portfolio for the swatches will be provided. This is an all day class. Class Fee: $100. Class Materials Fee: $15 #1702 No Fear Fabulous Spinning: Creative Spinning Techniques - Kimberly Darling - Saturday 9 a.m. 4 p.m. Learn how to create those gorgeous textured yarns that everyone loves to fondle and admire. Learn to coordinate colors, select fibers for contrast and texture, incorporate interesting add-ins, such as silk cocoons, beads, buttons, threads, sequins, feathers, ribbons, yarns, fabrics, everything but the kitchen sink! Drum carding, hackling, and other simple fiber prepping techniques will be demonstrated. Students may utilize any or all of them to prepare their fiber for spinning. Core-spinning, coreless core-spinning, auto-wrapping, lock spinning, and tail-spinning methods will be covered. Finishing techniques and what to do with this fabulous yarn will also be discussed. Students will have plenty of time to prep their materials, and create their yarn, all with hands-on assistance from an engaging instructor. In this class we ll investigate: Color Schemes, Yarn Structures, Cores and Supports, Fiber Preparation, Add-Ins, Fiber Transitions, Spinning Techniques for Texture Thread Plying, Finishing and Use. After this class, you will be fearless with your fiber and add-ins mixtures, and you will make a fun fabulous textured art yarn! This is an all day class. Supplies Students Should Bring: Spinning Wheel that can handle a bulky, heavily textured yarn; ie: jumbo flyer Bobbins; the larger the better 2 oz of wool roving in a color you like with a matching spool of sewing thread Any types of add-ins, such as those listed above, to coordinate or complement your roving Lazy Kate Niddy Noddy (optional) Scissors Plastic container for holding spool of thread Class Fee: $100. 2 Saturday Morning Classes # Double Knitting Basics - MJ Harris Saturday 9 a.m. Noon The Double Knitting technique has been around for centuries with only minor changes, but has experienced an increase in popularity in recent years. Come and find out what everyone is talking about. In this class you'll learn: what double knitting is; the history of double knitting; double knitting guidelines and terminology; how to double knit; how to increase and decrease when double knitting; how to double knit inside out; and how to make a sampler using double knitting techniques Students should bring: 2 or more colors of worsted weight yarn (no novelty yarn); straight or circular needles in a size appropriate for your yarn; paper for taking notes, and pen or pencil. May also want to bring stitch markers, scissors. and a yarn needle. Class Fee: $50. Materials Fee $0 # Learn To Knit - Diane Corson - Saturday 9 a.m. Noon If you ve always wanted to learn to knit, this is your chance! In this 3-hour class we ll learn the basics of the classic, English-style knitting method that s been used for centuries to create everything from scarves and sweaters to socks and mittens. Students will learn to cast on, knit, increase, decrease and bind off. Tips on reading a pattern, tool selection and yarn choice are included. We ll make a real project like a scarf or pot holder -- during class, and students will take home an easy-to-follow pattern so they can make more than one. Students should bring: 1 skein worsted weight yarn in a light, solid color, and 1 pair size 8 or 9 knitting needles. Wooden or plastic needles in length are easiest to handle. Class Fee: $50. Materials Fee $0 # Beginner Weaving Class - Deb Lundy - Saturday 9 a.m. Noon Do you want to learn how to weave but are intimidated by how expensive and complicated looms seem to be? Then this is the class for you! Not only will you learn how to weave, but you will leave the class with your very own Ashford Sampleit loom. Join Deb in exploring the basics of weaving on a rigid heddle loom by making a woven scarf. Class Fee: $65. Material Fee: $140 for the loom and yarn supplied. Saturday Afternoon Classes # Pattern and Chart Reading for the Beginning Knitter - MJ Harris - Saturday 1:00 4:00 p.m. Have you ever NOT knitted an item because you couldn't understand the pattern or because it used a knitting chart? In this class students will learn: various knitting terms, abbreviations and symbols used on knitting patterns; how to 'de-code' knitting patterns; how to determine the 'level' of a pattern - from beginner to expert; how to read a chart; tips and tricks of pattern and chart reading; and pattern/chart reading resources. NOTE: This class will not involve any actual knitting, but student may want to bring yarn and needles to 'try out' pattern rows or stitches. Class Fee: $50. Materials Fee $0 Page2
3 # Fiber Blending-blending boards, hand cards and drum carders - C&M Acres - Saturday 1:00 4:00 p.m. At this workshop you can be a part of the action. With hands on instruction of carding and blending of fiber, you can jump in to the world of fiber! Learn how to blend fibers to make truly unique batts of fiber you can spin or felt with. You will get to make batts using both a drum carder as well as a blending board. You will work with a variety of fiber types and colors. You will also get to take a little bit of blend home with ewe to enjoy. Class Fee: $50. Materials Fee $30 # Learn to Knit Socks-Diane Corson - Saturday 1:00 4:00 p.m. Learn how to knit socks in the classic, 4- needle method, and learn it in only 3 hours! Working with slightly larger DK-weight yarn and size 4 needles, you ll learn how to cast on and knit the cuff, turn the heel, shape and finish the toe, and make the sock fit properly. Students will create a baby-size sock in class, and will receive the teacher s original pattern with clearly-written instructions for making socks in any size. Students should have some prior experience working in the round on Double Pointed Needles (DPNs). Ability to read and follow pattern instructions is also needed. Students should bring: 1 skein DK- weight yarn in light, solid color, I set size 4 DPNs (wooden or plastic needles are easiest to handle), basic knitting tools (scissors, tape measure, crochet hook, tapestry needle), notebook and pen. Class Fee: $50. Materials Fee $0 # Rust Dyeing- Maggie Howe - Saturday 1:00 4:00 p.m. Rust Dyeing: Learn to dye silk and cotton fabrics with rust. Make BEAUTIFUL patterns, textures, and impressions with this simple but fascinating technique. All materials provided: you will make and take home your own fat quarter of cotton fabric and a silk scarf. Class Fee: $45. Materials Fee $15 Sunday All Day Class # Beginning Chair Caning - MJ Harris Sunday 9 a.m. 3 p.m. Ever wonder how a caned chair seat is made? Do you have one (or more) caned chair seats to replace? Then this is the class for you. In this class, participants will hand cane a wooden trivet using natural strand cane to learn the chair caning process. Other topics that will be discussed include: the difference between the various types of caning; the different types of caning materials; the 7 step method of hand caning; how to care for caned furniture. Students should bring to this class: small hand clippers or shears; small rag; spray bottle; bucket or tub (in addition to the spray bottle); paper for notes; pen or pencil; awl or ice pick. This is an all day class. Class Fee: $100. Materials Fee: $25 Sunday Morning Classes # Basics of Dyeing - Ellen Sakornbut Sunday 9 a.m. Noon This class will provide a basic comprehensive education into the fascinating art of dyeing fibers. Students will come to understand the major classes of fiber dyes and what they are used for. They will also be taught the necessary conditions that need to be met for dyeing fibers and ways to achieve these conditions without damaging the fiber being dyed. All students will experience dyeing in a hands-on manner and will experience at least 2 kinds of dye processes. Page3
4 All students will leave with a skein of locally-sourced yarn and four ounces of locally-sourced roving dyed by them as well as a manual into the basics of dyeing fiber. Class Fee: $50. Materials Fee $30 # The Strapping Cuff - Jill Johnson Sunday 9 a.m. Noon Combining wool felt, copper strapping and simple embroidery, we will create a fabulous original cuff bracelet. I will provide premade Cormo wool felt, embroidery thread, beads, and copper strapping, but feel free to bring any special threads or beads you may wish to include. Students should bring: Small Scissors. Class Fee: $50. Materials fee $20 # Tartan Weaving - Deb Lundy Sunday 9 a.m. Noon Are you fascinated by the clan plaids of the Outlander series? Have you wanted to learn how to make your own tartan? If so, then this is the class for you. This colorful and sturdy cloth has been prized in many cultures for centuries for its warmth and durability. In this class, students will learn the basics of how to weave their very own tartan by creating a tartan wrap. Students will need to have a loom, a 10 dpi heddle, and a basic knowledge of weaving. Materials fee includes 880 yards Jaeger Spun 100% wool yarn, enough for the entire project. Class Fee: $65. Materials Fee $55 # Woven art and Wall hangings - using fiber and yarn without knitting, crocheting, or using a traditional loom - Maggie Howe Sunday 9 a.m. Noon Learn to make fun and easy wall decorations or mini woven artworks. Use your fiber (locks, roving, yarn - any form!) to create beautiful textured works of art to fit any decor. We will explore a variety of easy techniques that showcase the texture and beauty of fibers - without relying on knitting, crocheting, or traditional looms. All materials will be supplied, BUT, feel free to bring your own fiber, yarn, roving, etc if you'd like to use it or share it with other students (your choice). Students should bring a pair of scissors. Class Fee: $45. Materials Fee $20 # Cobweb Scarves-Lisa Nelson Sunday 9 a.m. Noon Learn basic wet felting techniques as you create a light weight, colorful scarf using merino wool roving. Students should bring 1 or 2 bath-size or larger towels, a clean 1 gallon pail, and olive oil soap if you have it. Class Fee: $50. Materials Fee $15 Sunday Afternoon # Amazing Lace-An Introduction to Lace Knitting- Sarah Jane Humke Sunday Noon to 3 p.m. Join us as we explore lace knitting from many different lands including Estonia, The Shetland Islands, Iceland, and the US. Learn how to knit lace while listening to the fascinating history behind it. During this class you will come to understand the basic concepts of lace knitting as well as the math to develop basic designs. All students should be able to cast-on, knit, purl, make yarn overs and decreases prior to the class. Students will need to bring 3 sets of needles in the sizes of 2.5mm (US 2), 3.5mm (US 4) and 4.5mm (US 7). Needles can be straights, circulars or even DPNs, but wood or bamboo is easiest to use. Yarn and stitch markers are provided. Class Fee: $50. Materials Fee $7 Page4
5 #1717 Gradients, Fractals & Stained Glass, Oh My!- Kimberly Darling Sunday Noon to 3 p.m. Do you have some of those beautiful hand painted rovings with all of those gorgeous colors? Or maybe one that is neon bright? And you just aren't sure what to do with them? Then this is the class for you. You will learn how to make a gradient from almost any hand-painted roving. Then you will create a fractal, no math knowledge required. And at last, you will forge an amazing stained glass yarn, from a garishly bright roving. There will be discussion on finishing techniques, and examples of finished items from each of these types of yarns. Students are encouraged to bring in any hand-painted roving that has confounded them. In this class we ll explore: Hand-Painted Roving, Gradients, Singles or 2-ply Fractals, 2-ply, Stained Glass Yarn, 2-ply Finishing Techniques After this class, you will be able to spin an array of beautiful yarns that are uniquely suited to create interesting color stories within a garment or fabric. Supplies Students Should Bring: Spinning Wheel (in working order), 3 or 4 bobbins, lazy Kate, niddy noddy (optional), scissors, marker/pen. Class Fee: $50. Materials Fee $30 # Knitting Longitudinal Scarves and Shawls - use your scraps, art yarns, and STASH! -Maggie Howe Sunday Noon to 3 p.m. Use big needles, SIMPLE stitches and literally any yarn your have on hand to create gorgeous textured shawls, scarves and cowls. This is the perfect technique for stash busting, because you can use ANY weight yarn. It's perfect for art yarn, textured yarns, using up yarn you hate, and showcasing yarn you love. Level of students: Beginning knitters. Need to know how to cast on and do the knit stitch. But this is a fun class for advanced knitters as well. Age: 12 and up. What should students bring: a size 15, 17 or 19 circular needle - basically any length, and YARN. Scraps of any weight or length, any and all yarn, even acrylics can work beautifully in this project. The more texture and variation, the better! A wide selection will be the most fun to choose from, but just bring what you like. Class Fee: $50. Materials Fee $0 if bringing your own yarn, $15 to chose from instructors stash. # Toe-Up, Two-At-A-Time Socks - Bex Oliger Sunday Noon to 3 p.m. Hand-knit socks are beyond compare! Why do them Toe-Up? Why make them Two-At-A-Time? Come to class and learn all the whys and hows. This is one of Bex s most popular classes! No, you will not finish a pair of socks in class but you will have all of the techniques down to size socks for anyone and the confidence to finish on your own. You only need to know how to knit and purl. Needles, choice of yarns and pattern provided. Bring basic knitting notions including lock stitch markers, scissors, tape measure, calculator and pencil.
