Classes - Session 1 Felted Wool Dryer Balls - Mary Limpus GO GREEN, and learn to make felted dryer balls to use in place of dryer sheets to soften the laundry. They help keep down static cling and shorten the drying time by absorbing moisture. Mary raises shetland sheep on her farm in Amsterdam, Missouri where she spins, weaves, and knits with her own wools. She enjoys volunteering in schools to pass her knowledge in the fiber arts to the children, and she enjoys demonstrating at festivals, reenactments, and museums. Recently, Mary traveled to New Zealand to attend a fiber retreat at the Ashford Spinning Wheel Co. and was able to hone her skills in carding, weaving, dyeing, felting, and spinning silk and wool. Supplies to Bring: none Materials fee: $10 It Begins With The Fiber Wool Abe Buddish Often when we think of wool, we think of what we see at the big box stores thick and coarse. We might think of Merino wool, and we know that it s softer and usually comes in finer weights, but what exactly does Merino mean? Are there only these options to choose from? Not at all. There is a wide range of wool out there especially for those of us who can spin. You will receive a lot of information in this class. We will start with the sheep and work our way to yarn. We will look at fleeces and talk about different properties of the different breeds to see what would work best for your next project. We will learn what affects wool, on and off the sheep. We will see and feel wool samples from many different breeds of sheep. You will also take some wool home with you, so you can have a hands- on- experience spinning wool from different breed categories and start your own collection of samples. We will also discuss aspects of fiber like fiber diameter, prickle factor and more which pertain to all types of fiber. I am a young artist with a passion for Fiber Arts. I am exploring and learning techniques in felting, weaving and spinning. Seeing a finished piece coming from the fiber of my sheep and goats is a process I always enjoy. Much of what I do is eclectic as I research and discover new properties of the fiber I am working with, and this leads me down different paths. I am currently (2014) 18 years old and in my senior year of high school. My fiber interest began when I was 8 years old and given my first Angora goat and one thing led to another. I am very active in 4-H, and it has been a big influence in my life. The Weaver s Guild of Greater Kansas City along with the Felt Makers Federation of KC has given me encouragement and fed my creativity. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others and learning new techniques. Supplies to Bring: none Materials fee: $0

Second Chance Fabric Gretchen Nutt Each participant will create an entirely original and unique fat quarter of fabric using all sorts of leftovers, snippets and simple sewing machine stitches. Complex patterns, airy laces, and everything in between are possible with this technique. Each student is encouraged to save scraps of yarn, fabric, ribbons, roving, feathers and anything else that won't be hurt by water or a needle. Especially wonderful to use for this class are leftovers that would ordinarily be thrown away. I am an Accountant by profession, but since creativity is frowned on in that profession, I decided to break free 22 years ago to open my shop. I learned to knit at age 4 and soon was doing all sorts of needlework, bookbinding, embroidery, crazy quilting, painting and collage. My family was full of creative people, so it didn't seem at all strange to always be making something. I've taken the occasional art class at the University of Wisconsin, and the Art Institute of Kansas City, but I much prefer to experiment and see what happens. Some of my best work has evolved from my "mistakes", so I highly encourage an open mind!! For this class I'd like to emphasize that we will play! No two people will make the same thing. It will be important to bring your imagination. Supplies to Bring: A Sewing Machine! Scraps of yarn, fabric, roving, ribbons, etc in colors that you like together, thread to coordinate, contrast or blend with the scraps. Optional: beads, crystals, embellishments and needle and thread to attach them Materials fee: $15 Stitching to Build Texture and Dimension on Felt Jamie Root & Lauri Davidson Lauri and Jamie will teach the many ways to use the sewing machine and hand sewing to put exciting details on different forms of felt. Lauri Davidson - I grew up sewing, but since retirement last year, I now devote full time to creating with fiber. I love art that functions as a wearable." I experiment with fiber trying new approaches and watching how each application changes the color and texture of the fabric. Often I start with a color group and then manipulate the fiber to add texture. Jamie Root - I have been a traditional wet feltmaker for the past fifteen years or so and a shepherd for over twenty years. I love the process of growing wool and making it into unique wearables.

Supplies to Bring: Sewing machine that allows feed dogs to drop, embroidery foot or quilting foot, Variety of different size needles for hand sewing, tapestry needle, 30 to 40 weight rayon or polyester thread, embroidery thread, and yarn. Materials fee: $10 Wire Wrapping Stones Terry Kuehn Traditional and free-form techniques of making artistic pieces from wire and stones Terry Kuehn- an avid hobbyist, whose favorite pastimes are beadwork, jewelry creations, stained glass custom works and private classes and knitting. I have taught all of these techniques both in craft stores and privately. And am currently learning to restore antique spinning wheels. Supplies to Bring: Ruler, Scissors, wire cutters or nail clippers, Sharpie Marker, Masking Tape or Painters Tape, beads for decoration (optional) Materials fee: $17 Fun with Kumihimo Diana Schoneweis Kumihimo is an ancient Japanese form of braid making using a tool called the Marudai. Today, the modern way to make a Kumihimo braid is to use a lightweight foam disk to hold and organize your strands while braiding. For this workshop we will be making simple round Kumihimo braids to use as bracelets or cords for projects. We will be exploring braid patterns and see what effects we can get with different weights of yarn, string or cord to make fun bracelets and cords. Diana Schoneweis is a member of the Kaw Valley Fiber Guild in Lawrence, Kansas. She started weaving and working with Fiber in 1980 when she was introduced to a Weaver/Fiber artist in Bricelyn, Minnesota. Diana has a BFA in Graphic Design and a BS in Art Education from Kansas State University. Through out the years Diana has given workshops and talks on different types of art. Diana works for the Lawrence School District as an Instructional Reading Support Assistant. This past school year she also taught 4 th grade art. Supplies to Bring: Materials: Loom you can purchase a foam disk from your favorite beading store or online (I can purchase a loom for you if you d like). Another option would be to make a cardboard loom at the workshop. (Materials for this will be on hand the day of the workshop.) Bring string, cord or yarn of different weights and different colors. Also bring scissors, 8 office binder clips, paper and pencil. Materials fee: Cost: $3.00 for workshop (includes handouts & silver jewelry caps for one bracelet) Workshop and a Loom $10.00

Felted Flowers Kandys Bleil This class will employ wet felting techniques (rubbing, hand manipulation, rolling, stretching, etc.) to make these beautiful flowers from handfuls of special short-stapled merino wool. The class is structured to begin with basic skills and then to add progressing skills with each flower. The finished flowers can be used as pins, hairclips, table decorations or in other creative ways. This class will provide written instructions (including resources) and materials for the wet felting technique which will teach the stages of felting, from soft skin to a finished, sculpted flower. This class will offer a challenge for both beginning felters and those who have previous experience with wet felting. Students will leave class with at least 3 finished flowers. Kandys has been involved with fiber arts most of her life. She learned to knit at the age of 8 and has been knitting on and off all her adult life. She learned to spin in and shortly thereafter began exploring dyeing, carding, weaving and felting with a passion. She retired from her real-world job in 2010 which has allowed more time to do what she really enjoys - anything to do with fiber! Supplies to Bring: a bath towel, a bar of soap (any will do, but a milder, high-fat soap made with olive oil or goat's milk would be best), a good pair of scissors which can cut fine detail, a bowl that will hold at least one quart of liquid, and an empty soda or water bottle (16-20 oz capacity is plenty) with a few holes punched or drilled into the lid. A spray bottle will also work. Materials fee: $23 Rings, Buttons, and Bangles Marilyn Smith Learn how to make unique buttons, closures, hat pens, shawl pins, etc from recycled plastic rings and yarns and string. You will leave with ideas galore from this class. You will need a basic knowledge of crochet for this class. Raised in the sandhills of Nebraska, Marilyn learned to be self sufficient and adept in life skills, including fiber arts. She made her first wearable at age 5 and has never stopped creating. She weaves, crochets, and knits from her own sheep s fibers and has a wealth of knowledge that she joyfully passes on to others. Supplies to Bring: 00 steel crochet hook and G plastic crochet hook, scissors Materials fee: $0 Drum Carding Art Batts With Alpaca - Rhonda Butler Have you ever wondered how some spinners end up with crazy-colorful yarn that's full of texture? Or, have you wanted the opportunity to try drum carding before you invested in a carder? Drum carding is a In this class, each student will select 3 oz of

dyed or natural alpaca fiber, plus choose from a variety of dyed and natural silks, mohair, wool, silk noil, angelina, acrylics and glitz to blend into your batt. Your finished product can be used for spinning or felting. Join me for 90 minutes of colorful and crazy fun. Students will receive 3 oz - dyed or natural alpaca roving or 3 oz raw fleece and additional fibers such as silk, mohair, wool, silk noil, angelina, acrylic and glitz for blending. Rhonda Butler is the owner of R&B Alpaca Ranch located in Independence, MO. Rhonda and her husband have owned alpacas since Her love for color and texture turned into a fiber addiction in 2008 and there was no looking back! She sells raw fleece and roving, dyes, drum cards, felts and spins. She has a small farm store on their property and welcomes visitors. Supplies to Bring: Students are welcome to bring their own fiber and carder. All fiber must be washed, free of vegetation and lanolin. Materials fee: $30
