1 2017 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Alternative Embroidery Instructor: Julia Moran Offered: Thursday, 12:30-3:30 Class Description: Embroidery enthusiasts will learn new techniques to make their art pop, and new-comers will learn that they are embroidery enthusiasts! This class will cover and demonstrate the basic types of embroidery stitches, how creatively follow a design pattern and finally how to add another medium of art into embroidery work. This class will introduce felting, couching and inking to basic embroidery techniques, resulting in a unique, fun art form. Prerequisites: None Class Fee: $30 Supply Fee: $5 Max number of students: 15 Supplies students should bring: None Supplies instructor will bring: Embroidery floss, fabric, needles, embroidery hoop, wool, felting needles Basic Knitting Instructor: Dawn Burns Offered: Thursday, 12:30-3:30 Class Description: Learn the two basic stitches - knit stitch and purl stitch - as well as understanding the different yarns and tools needed for a lifetime of fun. 2 Bead Knitted Coin Purse Instructor: Mary Garing Offered: Thursday, 4:00-7:00 Class Description: Bead knitting adds another dimension of knitting. Learn how to knit a solid beaded fabric on the outside and yarn on the inside. This is an eye catcher when you pull it out to pay for something, but, yet it's not that hard to make. Length: 3.5 hours Prerequisites: Basic knitting skills Class Fee: $35.00 Supply Fee: $25.00 (coin purse kit) Max number of students: 15 Supplies students should bring: US size 1-16 inch circular needle Supplies instructor will bring: Kits, Pattern and instructons Beginning Rug Hooking Instructor: Mary Berry Offered: Saturday, 4:00-5:30 Class Description: Rug Hooking is a fast and fun way to make rugs (fancy that!) as well as art for your wall. Learn the basics of hooking with both cut wool strips and wool yarn. We'll also venture into some fun decorative techniques as time allows. You will get a good start (and possibly complete) a mat sufficiently sized to hang on the wall or use as a hot pad. 3 Beginning Wheel Spinning Instructor: Mary Berry Offered: Thursday 12:30-3:30 Class Description: If you've thought about spinning your own yarn, but aren't sure you will like it, this class is for YOU! If you are a "self-taught" spinner, and are wanting to become more technically proficient in spinning the type of yarn that YOU want to spin, then this class is for YOU. I will bring a selection of wheels from my shop for you to use if you do not have one. Bring your own if you own a functioning wheel! We will start with a classroom session, then move into the common area where you will be able to spin on my wheels for the rest of the day with my assistance. My goal for you is to learn about the wheels, all the pieces parts, what they do, and how to adjust them; learn about fiber preparations and the proper way to spin them and why they are different; and to end up with a two-ply yarn that you have spun yourself! plus practice time Prerequisites: None Class Fee: $60 Supply Fee: $15 Max number of students: 5 Supplies students should bring: Nothing Supplies instructor will bring: Wheels, fiber, other necessary tools Build A Batt Instructor: Mary Caroe Offered: Friday, 12:30-3:30 and Saturday, TBD Class Description: Always wanted to card your own batt? Now is your chance! Mary of Butterfly Girl Designs will have 3 carders and a HUGE selection of fibers to play with. This is more of a "create your own" opportunity than a formal class. Some instruction and assistance will be provided to you as well as some suggestions for getting the
4 type of batt you want. There is no actual class fee, you pay $6/oz for what you card. Come have fun playing with fiber! These buttons are not only usable on garments & purses, but can be made into brooches, rings, decorations for scarves & purses,and can be part of free form fiber arts creations. No sewing involved! You will learn the tricks and techniques,

7 Go More Pile: Beginning Pile Weaving Techniques Instructor: Melinda Morrow Offered: Saturday, 12:30-3:30 Class Description: Pile weave lets you create loops on woven fabric. It's perfect for rugs and wash clothes, and can also be a decorative accent on scarves, towels, or placemats. We'll weave a mug rug and learn to do basic pile, stripes, and two color patterns. I'll have lots of samples for you to look at and pattern charts for you to take home, and we'll discuss what to consider when weaving pile. This is a fuzzy and fun(ctional) weaving skill! Supplies instructor will bring: Charts, samples, extra DPNs for pick up Introduction to Knitting Lace Instructor: Alissa Barton Offered: Saturday, 12:30-3:30 Class Description: Lace knitting is fun, really. These three basic scarves will introduce you to the basic stitches while teaching you to work the pattern from the written word, progressing to working with charts. At the same time, we will cover how to fix common mistakes, read your knitting and how to figure out where you are in the pattern and how to rip back and get everything back on track. These needles have enugh grip to make them ideal for lace, very liht weight, and yet stron, warm, and durable. Make them as dull or sharp as your project requires. You will make a set of double point (5) carbon needles. The skills you learn here can be used to make needles in a variety of lengths, standard single points, or spindle shafts for hand spinning. Diane Johannsen will be teaching this adorable gnome and Linda J. will be teaching the teacup! Bring a friend, one of you learn the teacup one learns this amusing little gnome and then teach each other what you have learned! There is no throwing and it is easier than continental especially purling If you have arthritis or problems with you hands give this a try. Or you just want to give it a try. In this class, we will embellish a small zipper case with some needle felted locks enhanced with silk ribbon techniques. You will learn several silk ribbon embroidery techniques to get you started. 12 Spin the Bunny Instructor: Christine O'Hara Offered: Sunday, 9:00-12:00 Class Description: Learn the ins and outs of handling and spinning angora fiber. Students will be carding colors, blending with silk, and discussing what it can be like to own these fiber producers. You will learn what fabrics work best, fabric prep, several joining and spinning techniques and how best to finish your yarns. We will spin several different fabrics in class. 13 Spinning Famous Artists Instructor: Sony Hartley Offered: Thursday, 12:30-3:30 Class Description: Love the great artists? Learn to translate their works of art into beautiful handspun yarns. The basic elements of art used in their work will be part of your yarn creations. Artists like Monet, Mondrian, Chihuly, Winslow, O'Keefe and many more.we will be spinning short samples from 3 or 4 artists. Alissa will show many examples and talk about how she came up with the various yarns. 14 Sweaters from the top down Instructor: Mary Garing Offered: Friday, 9:00-12:00 Class Description: This is a fun way to make sweaters, this type of sweater is easy to adjust to any style, any figure, and best of all there is NO SEWING. You learn how to fill in the blanks using simple math, and make any size, any yarn and your gauge. Because of time you will be making a little sweater in class. Length: 4 hours Prerequisites: Basic knitting skills Class Fee: $35.00 Supply Fee: $0 Max number of students: 20 Supplies students should bring: 50g DK yarn, US size 4 needles (straight or circular) and basic knitting supplies. Supplies instructor will bring: Work sheets and Instructions Swedish weaving ( embroidery) Instructor: Toni Smith Offered: Saturday, 9:00-12:00 Class Description: You will learn to read a chart and weave a swatch large enough to be an accent pillow. This craft can be applied to any even weave fabric. While it can be used to recreate your mother's Huck weave towels, this class will show many uses for this art. 15 Swing Knitting Project Instructor: Mary Berry Offered: Friday, 4:00-6:00 Class Description: Swing knit your way to a gorgeous shawl (shawlette) that can be joined in a clever way to create the perfect bit of warmth you can toss over your head and on your shoulders. Choose colors and yarns that bring you joy and create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece in colors that ebb and flow and mingle into a sea of beauty! We will get a good start on the shawl (shawlette) in class, and you will leave with simple finishing instructions. Prerequisites: Must be able to Swing Knit using both Dark and Light Stanzas Class Fee: $10 Supply Fee: $5 Supplies students should bring: An assortment of yarns of various coordinating colors and styles in a worsted weight. Needles appropriate for the yarn Supplies instructor will bring: Pattern and miscellaneous supplies Swing Knitting Refresher Instructor: Mary Berry Offered: Thursday, 4:00-6:00 Class Description: Remember Swing Knitting from last year's Retreat? If your answer is "Yes, Mostly," then you need to spend some time in this "refresher" course before attending the Swing Knitting Project course! We will go over all the Swing Knitting terminology (Melody, Stanza, Beat, Pause -- is it coming back yet?), remind ourselves how to work a German Short Row, review the placement and removal of the pins, and more, as we work a small sample piece to "warm up" for the project class. Blow the dust off your Swing Knitting brain cells and get ready to take your Swing Knitting to the next level!

Instructor: Lynette Elliott Offered: Saturday, 9:00-12:00 Class Description: Tuck stitch isn't just for machine knitting. Different from drop stitch or slip stitch knitting, it's a beautiful brioche method of creating intricate lace patterns using multiple yarn overs or by knitting into rows below. It's also a term sometimes used for creating welts on the surface of the fabric. We will present several examples of tuck stitch patterns, both simple and complex. Because this class will involve basic brioche techniques, proficiency with brioche is a prerequisite. A short video demonstration will be provided for each stitch technique and we will knit samples of each in class. You will also receive a free custom designed pattern to create a lacy scarf or cowl that uses the methods you learn. We will provide samples, visual aids, and note taking supplies. Just bring your needles and pre-work swatches, your thinking cap and be ready to tuck it in! ***PLEASE NOTE: This class will have prework and requires proficiency in brioche techniques.*** Prerequisites: Basic Brioche Class or instructor approval Class Fee: $45 Supply Fee: $0

The supply fee covers the purchase of a Tunisian crochet hook. 18 Weave a Wall Hanging Instructor: Julia Moran Offered: Friday, 9:00-12:00 Class Description: This class will cover and demonstrate basic types of tapestry techniques that can be incorporated into the plain weave structure. This class will encouraged creative thinking, and students will learn how to make their very own "Free-Weave" wall hanging. Prerequisites: None Class Fee: $45 Supply Fee: $20 Max number of students: 15 Supplies students should bring: Students are encouraged to bring interesting and fun yarns from their stash and their own loom if they own one. Supplies instructor will bring: Looms and loom accessories, yarn Weaving Lace Textures (RH Loom) Instructor: Mary Berry Offered: Saturday, 9:00-12:00 Class Description: Although multiple colors in a shawl or scarf are lovely, sometimes you want the calm serenity of a solid color. But how do you make a solid color interesting? TEXTURE! One of my favorite lace textures is Huck. In this class, you will learn to weave 3 versions of Huck Lace on a rigid heddle loom. You will arrive with your loom warped (should we have a warping party the evening before?) with enough warp for generous sized samples that you can wet finish in the sink and watch the lace magic happen! I'll bring the record pages and sewing machine so you can keep your sample for future use in a gorgeous shawl. The focus is TEXTURE! Prerequisites: Must have basic weaving skills on a rigid heddle loom

I will take you through the world of chain maille jewelry and teach you how to link these surprisingly versatile rings into a new kind of fabric!
