You will knit a simple wash cloth and learn all the knitting basics to get you started. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off. You MUST have experience knitting in the round on double-pointed needles. Included: Double-pointed needles, yarn, stitch holder, pattern Instructor: Robin Oxenhorn Class: Basic Mittens Cost: $55 Dates/Time: Monday evenings, Oct. 23 & 30 from 5:30-7:30 pm Skills Learned: Learn how to make a basic mitten on double-pointed needles in a worsted weight wool. We ll teach you how to increase for a thumb gusset, how to make your thumb and a simple decrease to finish both thumb and the mitt. Think warm and cozy! Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently do a long-tail cast-on, join in the round, knit and purl, knitting in the round on double-pointed needles. 2 Class: Basics of Magic Loop Cost: $35 Three Sessions Available Dates/Time: Wed. morning, Sept. 20 from 9:30-11:30 am Wed. evening, Oct. 25 from 6:00-8:00 pm Sat. morning, Nov. 4 from 9:30-11:30 am Skills Learned: Make an adorable snowman cup cozy using magic loop, a technique that uses one long needle to knit in the round instead of double-pointed needles. Magic loop can be used to make socks, sleeves and hats and is a great skill to have in your toolbox. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently do a long-tail cast-on, knit, purl, bind-off, increase, decrease and be familiar with knitting in the round. It is commonly considered to be a faster knitting technique. Learn to recognize all your stitches and when something isn t quite right and recognize where you left off in a pattern and recognize mistakes so you can fix them! This class is for all levels. 3 Class: Knitting Tips & Tricks: Troubleshooting Cost: $25 Dates/Time: Thursday morning, Oct. 5 from 9:30-11:30 am Description: Does your heart sink when you accidentally pull stitches off of your knitting needle? In this class, you will learn to put those stitches back on the needle correctly as well as recognize and fix small errors such as twisted and dropped stitches. You will also learn how to undo (a.k.a. tink ) your knitting in order to make a correction. Prerequisites: MUST be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off Additional Info: Bring your own Handi-Tool (not included but available for purchase) There will be homework prior to class, directions will be sent upon registration. Instructors: Aldona Shumway Class: Knitting Tips & Tricks: Fixing Big Mistakes Cost: $25 Dates/Time: Thursday morning, Oct. 12 from 9:30-11:30 am Skills Learned: Have you ever found a mistake several rows down on a project and debated whether to fix or ignore it? If your primary repair strategy is to rip out your knitting, this class may be for you! You will learn to work your way down to a single incorrect stitch, fix it, then work back up to your current row. You will then pull out, repair, and re-knit a group of stitches while leaving the rest of your project intact. Not all mistakes can be fixed in this way but since so many can, it s a technique well worth learning. Crochet edging can be just the answer! In this class, you will learn three different edges: single crochet, scallop, and a novelty stitch for fun. You will knit swatches at home then crochet edges on them in class. In this class you ll learn how to read a pattern, do a magic-loop cast-on, crochet and join hexagons, do a finished border and block the final project. This can be a great stash-buster project. A tried-and-true classic that yields adorable results. This is a great class if you re looking to move beyond knitting just hats and scarves. In this class you will learn how to use the Custom Fit Program to create sweaters that fit perfectly. You will leave with a detailed set of your own personal measurements and the skills to make a high-quality swatch to determine your unique gauge, a must for accurate sizing. Then the Custom Fit system will do all the math for you and generate a personalized sweater pattern based on your measurements and gauge. You get to choose a pattern design you like and any weight yarn you want! Note: Yarn is not included in the class price. Using your personalized sweater pattern, you will make the sweater on your own. 9 Fall 2017 Mini-Workshops YARN DYEING TECHNIQUES Workshop: Handpainting Sock Yarn Cost: $90 Workshop: Watercolor and Speckles Cost: $90 Workshop: Sock Blank Alchemy Cost: $90 Dates/Time: Sunday morning, Sept. 17 from 9:30 am-12:30 pm Duration: Three-hour mini-workshop Skills Learned: This color-intense, hands-on workshop is for people who want to learn a technique for hand-painting yarns using acid dyes. We will explore color relationships in dyeing, how to safely and effectively use the materials, as well as preparing yarns for stressless winding. We will also discuss how different yarns receive dye based on their fiber content and how they have been processed. With this knowledge, we will learn how to work with the dyes to achieve the color results we hope for. Students will dye two skeins of fingering weight yarn to take home. Included: 2 skeins of fingering weight yarn for dyeing, dyes, fixatives, gloves and all materials for dyeing, additional skeins can be purchased Additional Info: Please wear clothes that can get messy and/or wet. An apron would be helpful Dates/Time: Sunday afternoon, Sept. 17 from 1:00-4:00 pm Duration: Three-hour mini-workshop Skills Learned: In this process you will learn how to apply dyes in and onto areas of the yarn to achieve a soft watercolor effect. Once you create the skein s base watercolor effect, you will stretch your color muscles further and apply a punch of color by adding speckles. This combination yields a unique and striking effect on your finished skein! Included: 2 skeins of fingering weight yarn for dyeing, dyes, fixatives, gloves and all materials for dyeing, additional skeins can be purchased Additional Info: Please wear clothes that can get messy and/or wet. An apron would be helpful Dates/Time: Saturday afternoon, Sept. 23 from 1:00-4:00 pm Duration: Three-hour mini-workshop Skills Learned: In this class you will work with dye on a knitted sock blank as if painting with the dyes. Using either free-hand or stencils, you will create designs, symbols, words of inspiration and good intentions onto the fabric. Once re-knit, your message is secretly contained within the knit garment, but only you will know! Spread a little good magic. One sock blank is included in this workshop, although participants will have the option to purchase a blanks. You will learn the basic principles of wet felting by fashioning a cord to be embellished with buttons, beads and thread or just use color to create a beautiful standalone cord. We will then wet felt a fitted cuff bracelet in layers of multi colors. Add trinkets, ours or your own, to highlight the play of colors as they are revealed. 11 FULL DAY WORKSHOP Workshop: Beginning Nuno Felting Cost: $125 Dates/Time: Sunday, Oct. 29 from 10:00 am-4:00 pm Duration: Six-hour workshop with lunch break (please bring your own lunch) Skills Learned: In this workshop we will explore nuno (meaning cloth in Japanese) felting and learn how silk or gauze and other fibers attach themselves to each other to create very beautiful flowing fabrics. You ll see how the silk maintains its lightness while the thin layers of wool that you add become a decorative element and add body to the silk. In this introductory workshop we will begin by creating a sampler to understand how placement and materials relate to one another to become one piece of fabric. We will learn how to add the wool in thin layers to retain the suppleness of the silk by designing with simple motifs for maximum success in the final outcome. The afternoon will entail creating our scarf from designing to felting, resulting in a beautiful finished nuno-felted scarf. Included: Fabric blanks for sampler and scarf, wool and other fibers, yarn embellishments, and all supplies needed to complete a nuno felted sampler and scarf Additional Info: Please wear clothes that can get messy and/or wet. An apron would be helpful. Please bring a couple of old bath towels to be used in the felting process. Please bring your lunch. Important Note: The process of felting requires a good deal of physical effort. For success in this workshop you must be able to stand for a good part of the day and exercise your shoulders, arms and back for an extended period of time to complete the felting process. You may be a wee bit sore in those spots the next day. Mother of Purl will send out a weekly project idea by featuring a simple one or two-skein project each week for the 13 weeks leading up to Christmas to get you ready with all your handmade holiday presents. The focus is simple, quick and a good value with a FREE pattern. Let us help make the decisions, so you can just knit! Here s how it works: Every week from mid-september to early December we will feature a pattern (that will be free with yarn purchase) and one or two selected yarns for that project. You ll receive a quick on Friday announcing that week s project. We ll have a sample and suggested yarns on display to make it easy to decide. It ll be a quick and easy way for you to make your handmade gifts for the holidays. Skill level for the projects will vary, but most are appropriate for beginners or advanced beginners.
