2 A few words from Bridget Welcome to our new brochure. It s gone on the website with our new calendar; hopefully this will help you to see what s happening, and when. Unfortunately, we do want to give customers as much notice as possible if a workshop is cancelled. Please note that this is also tied up with the requirements list; if we send these out too promptly it can be overlooked or customers get all organised only to be disappointed; please bear with us on the odd occasion a workshop has to be cancelled. We will need you to contact the shop if you paid by card as we don't keep card details on file so that we can action your refund. We have two visiting tutors this term; Angela Madden and Sylvia Critcher. Introducing our Visiting Tutors Sylvia Critcher Sylvia trained at Goldsmith s College in Fine Art and Textiles with Constance Howard as her tutor and inspiration. She has taught life drawing, fabric printing, painting and sculpture, embroidery, patchwork and quilting and a wide range of textile subjects for many years. She s also very well-known for her Trapunto work.

3 Introducing our Visiting Tutors Angela Madden After working for many years as an Occupational Therapist, Angela gained a degree in adult education before changing direction in 1991 to pursue her interest in patchwork and quilting. She s a well-published author of needlework books and a designer of drafting tools. She has also designed her own Celtic pattern. Her areas of expertise are very varied from Celtic design, through geometric, floral and perspective patchwork to photo realistic appliqué and innovative techniques using furnishing fabric. All her techniques are machine sewn. Gill We re also pleased to announce that Gill has also taken up the mantle of tutor. Before retiring from the Police, she was an accomplished trainer and author of their training programme, so she has plenty of teaching experience. Latterly, she has completed her City and Guild certificate and has embarked on the Diploma; she s extremely capable and knowledgeable.

4 MASterinG your SewinG MAChine with Ruth Jarman Ruth is back again with her ever popular workshop on how to get the best out of your sewing machine. No matter what make or model, she will teach you how to set the tension correctly and when to adjust to get the perfect stitch. Learn all about different needles, straight stitches, how to seam and neaten woven and stretch fabrics, blind and decorative hems, buttonholes, a basic introduction to embroidery, cleaning, oiling and lots of problem solving. Saturday 9th Feb - 10am to 4pm - 38 embellished diary Cover with Ruth Jarman Want to play with the stitches you learnt on the Mastering your Sewing Machine workshop? This workshop fits the bill perfectly as you will also learn some patchwork and quilting techniques too. Choose from a beautiful rainbow fabric pack and make an embroidered A5 notebook cover or diary, if you prefer. It s a great gift idea and it helps remind you of the vast array of stitches on your machine! Sunday 10th Feb - 10am to 4pm - 38 rainbow tote bag with Ruth Jarman Using traditional English paper piecing and an extremely easy quilting technique make this Rainbow Tote bag. Learn some great new construction techniques unique to Ruth and with the aid of a PVC fabric create this stunning, effective and very useful lined bag. Pack cut and available (colours, lining and PVC) as usual with Ruth's classes along with a pattern provided for free. Mon 11th Feb - 10am to 4pm - 38

5 over-lockers with Ruth Jarman do you have an over-locker in the cupboard that you haven t yet really managed to work? ruth s your gal she s a whizz with these machines. you ll learn loads, including: threading your over-locker and adjusting CORRECTLY to achieve a good stitch. Work seams on various weights of woven and knitted/stretch fabric. Roll hemming, using tape and elastics, sewing knitwear, flat lock seams and decorative edges. Roll hemming, using tape and elastics, sewing knitwear, flat lock seams and decorative edges. tuesday 12th Feb - 10am to 4pm - 38 CrAzy patchwork bag with Gill Come along and make this beautiful bag and useful crazy patchwork tote bag; use up some scraps that lurk in your boxes and stitch and flip to make this lined bag. Stunning, isn t it! Suitable for beginners or those who sew but haven t made a bag before Monday 21st Jan 10am to 4pm - 35 SliCe up A CirCle with Angela Madden Initially you will learn the design techniques showing just how easy it is to create kaleidoscopic, or many sectioned designs, even if you are not mathematical or artistic. Then you get to sew! This workshop is technique-based so we will not be intending to make an item during the session but you will learn a few really useful techniques. We will create designs and sewn samples... in fact, covering everything necessary to enable you to make something worthwhile leisurely at home. Possibly a cushion cover or bag front (suitable for all levels) tues 19th March - 10am to 4pm - 48

6 photo FAbriCAtion with Angela Madden You don t have to be able to draw to reproduce applique images of people, animals, houses, landscapes (or anything else) in fabric. (This technique is not connected to transferring photos to fabric by photocopying). This workshop can turn your favourite photos into something really special, and you can incorporate your favourite patchwork patterns, too, or design an original textile frame for your fabric picture. The class is technique based so we will not attempt to make an item. There will be an opportunity to practise all the stages required to create your personal item later in your own time and at your own speed and you will produce your own samples for future reference. This is a wonderful way to create very personal items for presents... or heirlooms to commemorate weddings and other family events... or just to have fun making something different which everyone will think is really stunning! (Suitable for all levels). wednesday 20th March 10am - 4pm - 48 wholecloth trapunto with Sylvia Critcher Learn the basics of Trapunto; this workshop will cover Italian, Trapunto and Marseilles work. You will leave with a piece of work that explores different aspects of corded and stuff work. Combine these with English quilting and you will see stunning results! Come along and have a relaxing hand sewing day. This workshop suits all levels of ability. thursday 25th April 10am - 4:30pm - 48 hawaiian work with Sylvia Critcher Try your hand at Hawaiian quilting a touch of the exotic as we approach Spring. You will create a piece of traditional work, or possibly work on your own design. Both machine and hand sewing are included in this workshop Friday 26th April 10am - 4:30pm - 48

It s possible to either use a layer cake, if you have one hidden away or use fabrics from your stash. A great start to your patchwork future! wednesday pm 7:00 to 9:00 Jan 23, Feb 13, Mar 6, StitCh not ditch with Bridget A regular gathering for ladies to carry on with their own existing projects in a chatty atmosphere with Bridget around to make the tea or coffee. Please note that this is not a tutored session, but it give you the chance to finish your PhDs. Fridays 10:00 to 4:00 Jan 11, 18, Feb 8, 15 Mar 8, 15, Apr 5-15 per day Sew MuCh to do with Bridget Have you got a lot of unfinished projects hidden away? If so, this once a month get together is ideal to work on these projects with Bridget on hand to make the tea. Mondays 10:00 to 4:00 Jan 28th, Feb 25, Mar 11, Apr 1st - 15 per day SewinG MAChine world You can still use us as a drop off point to get your sewing machine serviced. Bring your machine in by mid-afternoon on Wednesday and it will be serviced/repaired and returned by the next week, usually. please note this change of arrangements if your machine is not with us by the time the shop closes on wednesday, we cannot be sure that it will be collected the following day.

11 Our Workshop For those of you who have not visited us before, our workshop is directly above the shop. It s bright and airy and fitted with daylight lighting. We supply complementary tea, coffee and biscuits for all workshop participants and there is a fridge and microwave for you to keep your packed lunch fresh and warm it up if necessary. Alternatively, for those who prefer to buy their lunch on site, we have an arrangement with the Wroxham Barns Restaurant for you to enjoy a takeaway lunch at a reduced price! If you have difficulty getting your sewing machine up the stairs we can help with that and you may bring your car to the back of the shop to offload heavy items (before 10am and after 4pm only); but please be very careful of pedestrians, especially children. Our aim is to provide you with the venue and facilities to learn more about your hobby and share an enjoyable day with like-minded ladies. We look forward to seeing you soon. It is now possible to book courses online please go to our new website, and look at the courses. Once we receive payment, you will be able to download the course requirements immediately. Please use the form to make your booking and send it or hand it in to the shop. Full payment MUST be made at time of booking by cheque, cash or payment card. Cash or cheques accompanying unsuccessful applications will be returned. Card payments will be refunded. We will now be using a first come, first served basis as so many customers are now online and receive our brochure via . Our brochure is also listed on our website and application forms can be downloaded from there. Some of the courses are expected to be and so we suggest that you send your application forms in promptly to avoid disappointment. If you need to cancel a booking we will refund your money if we are able to re-sell your place. you should assume that your application for a workshop has been successful. we will not contact you unless the course is oversubscribed and your application hasn t been successful. Requirements lists will be sent out by or post, once payment has been received.
