President s Message: Dear Quilting Divas, I was stopped for speeding today. I was daydreaming about my next quilt. I didn t tell him that was why I was speeding. Maybe if I had he wouldn t have written the ticket. LOL. Anyway, after I pay for my ticket, ouch. I plan to start on my quilt of valor project. I hope you will check out the website, On the site are many pictures and links to other sites for quilt patterns, etc. Fons and Porter have also featured Quilts of valor. Fran is busy testing the next mystery quilt. This pattern can be used to make a quilt of valor. Our next meeting is pretty special. Chris Biller will be sharing photos and commentary from their trip to Ireland. Hope I see you there. Want Ads can be ed to wwwquiltshow11@yahoo.com MINUTES July 2012 Minutes of the Inspired Quilters Guild Garage sale took place before meeting. There were 10 people selling things. President, Angela Simmons, called the meeting to order. There were four guests: Mattie Abel, Terri Whit, Ruth Courtney, and Karen Arnold. One new member: Sandra Abel. Refreshment brought by: Valerie Cavallaro, Judy Townsend, Marie LaChance and Angela Simmons June s minutes were approved as written. Shirley Buttram gave the treasurer report. $ Lisa Boling noted that the budget was in the newsletter. Melissa Towne move to accept the budget as written. Sandra Doussard 2nd. Motion passed. Judy McCandles reported that Dues are due. $20.00-Adult, $10-Student. Update your information in the Membership Directory. Marie LaChance announced that Door prize tickets are 3 for a $1.00. Frances Clark Ellis, Corresponding Secretary, announce to call or her if you know of any one that needs a card sent to them. Doris Hahn passed around a signup sheet those willing to make cookies for the Patty Knoechel s program. Donna Drees announced Patty Knoechel program committee meeting is July 11 at 3:00 at her house. Fran Gurka, Vice President, asked for program ideas. Pat Breon announced a Workshop on July 25 for Jelly Roll Tote by Brenda Rahm. Melissa Towne, workshop chair, asked for ideas on workshops and that each member gets $10 off one workshop. Donna Drees need Thirties fabric for two quilts she donates to Holden and Warrensburg Senior Center. Diane Weigand announces that we need volunteers for the Quilt show March 9th. Diane Weigand, Newsletter chair, stated that deadline for newsletters are the 20th of each month. 2

3 Minutes continue Pat Breon gave tip of the month. Use an empty dental floss holder to cut thread, when you travel on a plane. Angela Simmons has decided for her Service Project this year to do Quilts of Valor More information to follow. Fat Quarters were given out for July Birthdays. Door Prize winner: Rhonda Doherty, Fran Gurka, Iona Heck, Francis Clark Ellis, Karen Arnold, Kitty Rudy, Pat Breon and Dorris Hahn Show and Tell Meeting adjoined, Secretary Toni Peerbolte DUES ARE DUE Guild dues of $20.00 are due in August. Dues must be paid in order to receive the monthly newsletter. Ten dollars of the dues may be used for workshops. NEED FOR COOKIES Homemade cookies are needed for the Pat Knsehel event. Pat is Eleanor Burns s sister and always has an interesting show and lots of quilts to see. The event is September 5 at the American Legion Hall in Warrensburg. If you can donate a couple dozen of cookies call Doris Hahn at Note: Beth Love is in the Country Club Care Center, Room s fabric contributions for the Senior Center Quilts PLEASE...Please bring your contributions of fat quarters of 30's fabrics the Quilt Guild in August. These are needed to make our annual quilts we donate to both Holden Senior Center and Warrensburg Senior Center each year. I am about ready to begin and am still in need of assorted 30's prints. 4 Mystery Quilt Intro to the Mystery Quilt of Valor (for the president's project) This is a very scrappy quilt. You will need yardage for the background (cream), and a little yardage in red, but the rest can be scrappy. I have used Americana colors in my quilt, but you may choose to go with standard red, white, blue if desired. A good assortment of FQ's, 1/4 yd cuts, or go shopping in your stash for this project. Finished size is 67" x 67. This is a 7 week (7 clues) Mystery Part 1 of the Quilts of Valor Mystery Quilt Fabric & Cutting Requirements: This Mystery is different from many of my previous ones in that I'm going to have you do most of the cutting before the mystery begins. Don't worry! There are only 3 basic sizes used in most of the quilt. Cream /4 yds Cut the following squares, then set the rest aside (24) 6 1/2" squares (24) 2 1/2" squares (105) 3 1/2" squares - draw a diagonal line on wrong side Red... 1/2 yd (Do NOT cut this into squares - use other fabric for that! Set this 1/2 yd aside for now) 2 1/2" squares For a pleasing, scrappy look choose many different fabrics! Business Highway 50 Warrensburg, MO SHOP TALK SEWING MACHINE BACK PAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! It has finally happen to me. Sewing Machine Back Pain. It seems just about every time I sit to do some relaxing piecing on a special new project on my sewing machine it happens. An hour of sewing and ten on the couch with a heated corn bag. I cannot just quit piecing my new inspirations. So I needed a solution. First I bought a sewing machine slant board that tilts the machine forward. In fact I bought two. One for the machine in my house and one for the machine in my shop. That helped some but not enough for my back. Next I tried a new chair, one that was a little lower than what I was using. The chair is one I bought at a craft show a few years ago. It is an antique (maybe just old) dining room chair. The seat is unique in that it is woven with leather belts and it is shorter than most chairs today. The shorter chair helps; now I look up and not down on the sewing machine saving my back a little. I still needed more help and discovered I needed to raise the foot control about 3 inches off the floor. That would be good for my back. I did this by placing a few scrap wood pieces under the foot control. Some books would work too. I am now sewing pain free, well almost. After sewing for about 15 minutes I get up and stretch, cut or press or just walk around. That helps and my back exercises. If anyone has suggestions let me know and I will print them. Diane 5
