1 Vol. 20 No. 10 MAY Quilter s Guild of Grand Prairie Founded July 5, 1993 Our Guild has been formed to preserve the heritage of quilting, to be a source of information and inspiration, to perpetuate high quality of excellence in quilting and to be a gathering place for people with a common interest. We welcomed for a 2nd visit Christine and Lauren and we welcomed for the first time Kathy Poole and Evalena Duncan. We hope you ll come back to our May meeting. As an FYI - after you ve visited our Guild twice, we do ask that you join us as a paying member on the third visit. Membership dues are $20 for regular members and $15 for those folks age 65+. JOIN US Regular monthly meetings are held on the first Monday of each month from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Grand Prairie, 310 S. W. 3rd St., Grand Prairie, TX. All visitors are welcome (ages 10 and up). NEXT MEETING: May 6, 2013 President s CORNER Great meeting in April. It was nice to hear about different opportunities in our community where we might be able to serve others less fortunate than we are. Big thank you to Margaret for making the beautiful wall hanging to be donated to our meeting place. Margaret you do beautiful work and have great taste in color choices. So they say April showers bring May flowers, but I see rainy days as perfect days to sew. Hopefully for lots of reasons we have some April showers. Welcome to our visitors and our new members. This is a voluntary effort, but most of us like to receive a door prize and we hope everyone will participate. The first speaker was Elizabeth Trevino, filling in for her mother Grace, from the Grand Prairie Food & Clothing Co-op. The organization is 21 years old and with the help of several churches they are able to provide food & clothing for needy families in our city. Diana Truss, from Brighter Tomorrows, spoke of the services available to help women & children who suffer abuse or violence in their lives. Chris Avila, representing E. Caryle Smith Jr. Health Center, part of Parkland, informed the group of the wide variety of services they provide to the community. n Jane welcomed visitors Evalena Duncan, Kathleen Poole who is President of the Irving Quilt Guild Christine Blanton and Lauren Charron. n Elisabeth was the Birthday-girl for April. n Remembrances: Lillie is doing well from her surgery. Jane is to have knee surgery and she is also going to be grandmother again. Grace announced, for those who knew him, Pete Thompson has passed away. He was a former coach & teacher in the Grand Prairie School system. n The minutes from the last meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. n Debi stated a corrected balance of $1, from the amount in the newsletter. Open minutes 2013 QUILT GUILD OFFICERS & BOARD Vol. 20 No. 10 Michelle had four door prizes to give away. Janis, Kathleen and Elisabeth won with Shirley winning the material. Michelle gave a short explanation of how the door prizes are the donations of the group members. She also reminded everyone of the retreat scheduled for May 17, 18, and 19. She needs a deposit of $40 by the end of April if anyone else would like to go. So far 8 are going. n Elisabeth will have a two-part Mystery Quilt workshop June 29 for the first part and July 27 for the second. It will be approx. 57x57 or 69x69 with borders. The workshop will began at 9 and end about 3, with a potluck lunch. n Lauren won the nine B-O-M blocks. Janis had the pattern for next month Next Door Neighbors Block made from Tuscany fabric colors. Nancy reminded everyone of the 12x12 Challenge Blocks for the May meeting. n Janice and Tory completed what was left to be made of the 500 pincushions for the goody bags for the rally day event of TAQG. May 31 is the deadline for submitting a miniature quilt for the auction. n Jane had the directions to make blocks for the Quilts of Valor Campaign. She stated she would collect them and be responsible for mailing if anyone would like to participate. Be sure to follow the directions exactly as on the pattern. n I showed the group the completed wallhanging top made for the group to give to the church. Grace is to have it quilted. n Nancy, Tory, Janis, Marty (going to be a great-grandmother) and Grace had items for show-&-tell. n The meeting adjourned at 8 o clock. Margaret Alsup Membership... 4 MAY Vol. 20 No. 10 HHHH MAY meeting program notes From the program committee: the program for May will be Quilt School. Some of us might call this School House. There will be stations set up for demonstrations of techniques new and old. The next workshop will be a two-part workshop on June 29 and July 27. This will be a mystery quilt with lots of parts. You will get your cutting instructions and fabric requirements prior to June 29. On June 29 we ll see how far we get and determine where we ll start on July 27. The idea being that we are 12 by 12 challenge -YEE-HAW! This was a project begun by several quilters. You can see their blocks at this web site: 1. The block will be 12" by 12" finished. It will be completely finished, quilted and bound. 2. You are free to interpret the Theme in any way you choose, with any method you choose. 3. I will choose the first Theme. Then someone from the group participating in the first month s challenge will get to choose the Workshop news next Theme. 4. Blocks will be brought to the meeting and displayed. The block will be yours to keep. 5. We will do one every two months, beginning in January. The next one will be displayed at the May meeting and the theme is Yee-Haw. 5 Scrappy Spring Mystery 2008 Cindy Carter 2008 This is a scrappy quilt with a very definite spring theme. I recommend you choose fabrics that say spring to you. If you are using prints please use a smaller scale print. If you do NOT like scrappy you can also make the quilt NOT scrappy. The quilt pattern includes a border. If you prefer to do your own border, that would be great too. The quilt was designed to be fun for both beginners and more advanced quilters. Choose your quilt size: Lap/Twin 57 by7 with border 69 by 69 Full 75 by 75 with border 87 by 87 If you want a larger quilt you can easily add more rounds to the border. Each round increases the dimension of the quilt by 6. (For example, adding one round would make the full measure 93 by 93 ). 6 Fabric Requirements: Lap/Twin - (9) 3.5 by 44/45 strips spring theme fabric This can be all the same fabric or 9 different fabrics. (This is about 1 yard if using all the same fabric. 42 fabric will work but you must include the selvedges when cutting.) OR (9) FQs spring theme fabric. (This will be enough for the border also.) (2) 2 by WOF strip of gold, red, orange or a darker yellow. (4) 2.5 by WOF strips of green. (7) 2 by WOF strips solid spring accent fabric. (About ½ yard.) 2 ½ yards background fabric. Lap/Twin Border - (84) 3.5 scrappy spring theme squares. OR (7) strips 3.5 by 44/45 strips spring theme fabric. (This is about ¾ yard if using all the same fabric. 42 fabric will work but you must include the selvedges when cutting.) (7) strips 3.5 by 44/45 background fabric.
