I never planned for these health problems. I sure want to thank everyone for being so good to me and for all of the cards, gifts and many prayers in my behalf. It s been eight weeks since my surgery which is a goal the doctors set for me to begin living again. Recovery will take six months, but at least I m moving now. I appreciate all of those who took charge in my absence. A special thanks to Wanda, Kim, Patti and LaRee for their leadership at this time. The Utah Quilt Guild has become very aware of our guild because our membership is one of the largest in the state. I hope our members will register for the Quilt Fest in St. George, to join in with our support and participation. *Scott

Webmaster Spotlight ~ Joyce Pohl Hi, my name is Joyce Pohl, and I m so happy to be a member of the quilt guild. I have Dorothy Gurley and Mary Walther to thank for my membership, they have been wonderful friends. My husband, Bob, and I moved from Reno, NV in 2005, we ve been married 26 years, have nine children between us, 23 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one on the way. We just completd a two year welfare mission for our church here in CC at the employment office. I graduated from UNR (University of Northern Reno) in 2002 when I was 64 with a Bachelors Degree in Family Studies. I taught Kindergarten at a private school in Reno for 14 years. ( A state license wasn t required to teach at a private school.) My mother taught me to sew on a treadle machine, and when I was six years old I made most of my school clothes. Later she gave me and my two sisters a small sewing machine which has been my treasure. I like to make table runners, fabric bowls and quilts. I give the quilts away as soon as they re finished although I did keep the first one I made for memories sake. ~Joyce

Cedar City The retreat is four days and three nights featuring twenty six classes with teachers from Utah and Nevada and our national teacher, Jill Finley, from Utah. Registration fee is $15 which includes: Meet the teachers, trunk shows, show-n-tell projects from past retreats. All night sew Friday night with lots of door prizes. Start with a proven system for designing, cutting and sewing quilts; add two of the most interesting shapes used in quilts piecing; mix in lots of personality and helpful illustrations. The results are hundreds of original and easy-to-make quilts. ~ By Donna Poster Humanitarian Projects September 27 A thank-you to everyone who helped make the Pajamas for Family Services such a success. Twenty-two ladies and one gentleman came, to date there are 15 finished PJ pants that have been turned in. Thank You, Thank You!!! The next project will be to make 25 quilts for low income housing. It has been decided we will use squares of 4 1/2" and 5 1/2" to make 9 patch squares. The 4 1/2" squares will make a 12 1/2" block and the other a 15 1/2" block. Look in your stashes for small pieces and bring them to the September meeting. The guild also has fabric for squares. There will be two containers at the meeting to put the two different cut squares in. Bring your rotary cutters, cutting mats and your cheerful personalities!! In October the blocks can be made. 5 Page 5 Luncheon Neighborhood News ~ September: Fresh from Your Garden Block by Block Stories of a Common Tread 12 October 31 December 2012 Frontier Homestead Park ~ October: Soup and Bread Zucchini Pineapple Bread 3 eggs 1 c. veg. oil 2 c. sugar 2 tsp. vanilla 2 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. salt ¼ tsp. baking powder 1 ½ tsp. cinnamon 2 c. shredded zucchini ¾ tsp. nutmeg 1 (8 oz.) crushed pineapple, drained 3 c. flour 1 c. each nuts and raisins -optional Beat eggs, oil, sugar and vanilla until thick. Stir in remaining ingredients; blend well. Pour into 2 greased & floured loaf pans. 350 degrees min We are not looking for the newest or nicest quilts, but ones that speak to the story of how quilts and quilting have preserved some of our history. Please stop by the Frontier Homestead Park for an entry form and more information about the Block by Block exhibit. We hope you ll display a quilt.
