Box 391 Lockport, IL Volume 35 March 2011 Number 15 TINA S NOTES I would like to thank in advance, Marie Blunk and the guilds board for filling in for me while I care for my mother who will be undergoing a large surgery March 14 th to repair an aneurism. Thank you to those who stepped up and accepted the positions of the board coming up. The installation of the new board will be in May. I will be one of the officers being replaced after serving 2 years. Wow, time flies! Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig is the Gaelic way of expressing a wish that you have all the blessings of St Patrick's Day and the "luck of the Irish" to go with it. As a child my mom allowed me to take St Pats Day off from school every year. She is from Co Kerry Ireland and we celebrated St Patricks Day as the truly Irish do. In Ireland, St Patricks Day is a national holiday, but unlike American celebrations, its not a big drinking party! In fact until recently pubs in Ireland were closed for the day! For most Irish the day begins with church and the thankfulness the Irish people have towards the patron of the island. The first St Pats Day parade happened in Boston, not Ireland. Americans made St Patricks Day a party day. Gail is continuing to work on upcoming speakers not only for next year, but for the following year as well. We are very excited about some of her perspective selections. A new book has been added to our library. It is titled 5500 Quilt Block Designs and seems to have everything you may have ever wanted to know in it. Dorothy Brumbaugh is also checking into other new books which we may be able to add to our library. Our May banquet is right around the corner and plans are being made for this gala event!

GStepanek@sbcglobal.net Tuesday Guild Meeting and JANE'S TEXTILE TREASURE GARDEN presented by Jane Sassamann Jane A. Sassaman is a contemporary quilt artist, fabric designer, author and teacher. Her lecture, Jane's Textile Treasure Garden, will give us a glimpse into the inspirations and process of designing fabric. Saturday ABSTRACTING FROM NATURE presented by Jane Sassaman WORKSHOP 9:30a at SOS - Please note that we have changed the date from Tuesday to Saturday so that we can accommodate those of you who are working during the week. Nature is an endless source of inspiration. In this class we will examine a wide variety of artist s interpretations of nature before beginning to manipulate natural forms ourselves. Through a series of exercises we will experiment with abstraction and exaggeration to capture the essence and energy of your favorite flora and achieve dramatic visual effects. We will then translate these ideas into fabric in the 2 to 5 day workshop.

4 2011 CALENDAR OF EVENTS (contd) Drawing skills are not needed but participants should have a strong interest in developing their own design language and unique visual symbols. This class is especially beneficial for the drawing impaired and the tragically literal. Saturday SOS Sewing at SOS Village All day sew at the SOS Village will be from 9:00 am until 4:00pm. Lunch, water, and snacks will be available. Help us use some of the fabric on scrappy quilts, work on a pre-packaged kit, or just hang out. We are looking for 8 ½ squares of novelty fabric to be used in our summer jar quilt project Tuesday Guild Meeting and THE SCRAP BAG demonstrated by Marie Blunk Every quilter needs more than one of these bags!! Just bring your machine, basic quilting supplies and 2 fat quarters. We will supply the filling/rice and you can go home with a finished bag! Tuesday STRIPES THAT SIZZLE presented by Margaret Miller WORKSHOP 9:30am at SOS Margaret brings a great WOW factor with her use of color and shape. A sewing workshop which yields a quilt top plus working plans for many more. Easy strip piecing which explores innovative approach to moving color and value across the quilt. Students learn much about value and color from each other's fabric selections, and from watching these fabrics transform during the day. Requires cutting strips ahead of time. Tuesday Miller Tuesday Guild Meeting and Looking Forward presented by Margaret Guild Meeting and MEMBER TRUNK SHOW Our members are so talented!! We know how much you enjoy show & tell so we have asked a few guild members to show us more of their quilts (a very informal show & tell). Come out and find out what they have in their closets! Please note: During the summer months Social Quilting is held on Wednesdays, in lieu of Tuesday at SOS Village GUILD INFORMATION Library Policy - The Guild Library is for the benefit of the entire membership. Books may be taken out for one month. Books may be renewed if there is not a waiting list. A fine of $1.00 per book per month will be assessed when books are not returned on time. The above policy can be found in your membership directory. Your librarian will begin looking at the check-out cards and reminding members to keep those items circulating. The Librarian is also responsible for selecting books for acquisition, arranging for membership checkout of books and ordering books, pamphlets and other educational materials related to quilting. An order is being prepared and I will notify you of new arrivals. You may also submit requests, in writing or an to me, with a note about why it would be a good addition to our Guild library. 6 Welcome New Members Barb Wrobel Mary Klimasara Mary Mandernach Jeanne Uffmann - Renewal Corrections Celeste Belke Dorothy Brumbaugh DBB8869@hotmail.com Joni Byrne - MJB1010@comcast.net Recipes courtesy of Jeanne Engstrom Pumpkin Pie Cake Amish Quilting Cookbook 1 can evaporated milk 3 eggs 2 C. pumpkin 1 yellow cake mix 1 C sugar 3/4 C butter, melted 4 tsp. pumpkin pie spice whipped cream Combine evaporated milk, pumpkin, sugar, pie spice and eggs; beat. Pour into a 9x13 pan. Sprinkle cake mix over the top. Drizzle with melted butter. Bake 350 for minutes or until done; cool. Top with whipped cream. Diabetic Sugar-Free Raisin Bars Amish Friends Cookbook by Wanda E. Brunstetter 1 C raisins 1/2 C water 1/2 C margarine 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp. nutmeg 1 egg, slightly beaten 3/4 C unsweetened applesauce 1/4 tsp. vanilla 1 C flour 1 TB sugar substitute 1 tsp. baking soda Preheat oven to 350. In a saucepan on medium heat, cook raisins, water, margarine, cinnamon, and nutmeg until the margarine is melted. Continue cooking for 3 minutes. Add egg, applesauce, and vanilla and mix well. Combine flour, sugar substitute, and baking soda to cooked mixture and stir. Spread into a greased 8-inch square pan and bake for minutes or until lightly browned. Cut into bars.

7 BLOCK FOR TINA Sh sh, it s a secret. The members of the guild traditionally give signature blocks to the outgoing president as a thank you for her service. Since Tina loves Dresden Plate we are going to give her signed Dresden plate blades that she can assemble into quilts blocks. Please bring a 5 X 7 rectangle of pastel fabric. Draw the blade, using the template below, on the backside of the fabric and sign your name on the front. Please use the outer most line (the cutting line) for drawing the shape. Signed blocks can be given to Marie Blunk or any other officer. We will give the blocks to Tina at the banquet in May so please get the blocks in by April social quilting.
