It is fascinating to watch the changing of nature s color guard, from the varied hues of green to the truly vibrant yellows, oranges and reds. Although our colours are probably not as spectacular as those of our Eastern provinces, we still have a palette of splendid beauty, particularly when we see the reflections in many of our surrounding waters. Of course, with Autumn, it is naturally harvest time so Thanksgiving is a festive eating time for us North Americans. It is a time for family and traditions and the most traditional meal of all tends to include turkey and pumpkin pie or pumpkin in any form. I do not like pumpkin pie or cheesecake but I do enjoy pumpkin bread or a pumpkin cookie, so I have included my pumpkin alternative in this newsletter! October is also Quilt Show season in our neck of the woods so don t forget to attend the Vancouver Quilt show (Oct 12 and 13), the Harrison Mills Quilt Show Oct 13 and 14), The Piecemakers Quilt Show (Oct. 19 and 20) and the Blue Mountain Quilt Show (Oct 20 and 21). Be sure to check these out and bring back ideas for our own show next year!. Do you realize that it is only 12 weeks until Christmas? Time to start on those projects! Our program committee has some Christmas ideas they will be sharing with us in November so perhaps we will all be making some of those for gifts! Don t forget: Please arrive at the Lion s facility after 11:30 am. Show and Show Tell will7be at 12:30 followed by a trunk show and then Hope Trunk the meeting. See you October 15th! Lynn G.

3 Chilliwack Quilters Guild Newsletter 3 Program Committee Just a quick reminder that this month we have Carolyn Jennings, the Fraser Valley representative for Quilts of Valour Canada is coming for a short visit. She will be giving a talk on Quilts of Valour why we continue to need this program and how we can help. I have made up 24 small kits, each containing one block, that our guild can make into a quilt. This would be given through Quilts of Valour from our guild to a veteran. So, therefore I am looking for 24 people who would be willing to sew one block and return it to me at the November meeting. We could work together and complete the top at one of our SEWING DAYS. I attended the Gathering of the Guilds with Lynn Garbay on Saturday, September 29th. I was glad to learn that I was not the only rookie program chair. There was a lot of info shared ideas for games and ideas for programs. DON T FORGET YOUR BLOCK OF THE MONTH. Jeannie has been busy collecting the blocks for the remainder of the year. We are going ahead with our sewing day at the Sardis library on October 13 (yes that s BEFORE the guild meeting). We have the facility from 10-3 so come and join us bring your lunch, sewing machine and let s get those projects finished or (like me) started. I know each year most of us probably add a few new ornaments to our Christmas trees. Next month we start the countdown to Christmas with demos of fabric ornaments.this should get us all in the Christmas spirit See you on October 13 at Sardis Library. Sewing Day Sardis Library on Saturday, October 13 (before the guild meeting) 10 am 3 pm bring your lunch sewing machine projects to start, work on, or finish!

7 Chilliwack Quilters Guild Newsletter 7 Bed and Quilt Sizes Size Mattress Quilt Types (inches) W x L Comforter 1 Coverlet 2 Bedspread 3 Crib 27 x x x 52 NA Twin 39 x x x x 98 Full 54 x x x x 98 Queen 60 x x x x 103 King 78 x x x x 103 California King With the exception of crib quilts: 72 x x x x Comforter size includes a 14 drop on three sides to cover mattress. 2. Coverlet size includes a 16 drop on three sides to cover mattress and box spring. 3. Bedspread size includes a 21 drop on three sides to reach close to the floor. If you want the quilt to include a pillow tuck, add 10 to the length; this is for coverlets and bedspreads only. Comforter size are meant to be used with a dust ruffle and no pillow tuck. Packaged Batting Quilt Batting Crib 45 x 60 Twin 72 x 90 Full 81 x 96 Queen 90 x 108 King 120 x 120 While packaged batting may be classified for a specific bed size, it might also be too small depending on the size quilt you are making for the bed. Buy your batting large enough so that you have 4 extra on all sides of the quilt to make up for any shifting while quilting. Remember that your quilt back should be the same size, or larger, than your batting. Batting is also available by the yard from 50 up to 120 wide. If you need a wider width, it is possible to piece your bathing together by simply butting up the edges and securing with a loose zig-zag stitch. Your quilting will further secure it together. Created by Deirdre of Hallett House Designs Page 1

8 Chilliwack Quilters Guild Newsletter 8 The quilt sizes on the previous page are considered to be standard sizes. However, mattresses and box springs come in various lengths and depths now, so you may have to measure your bed if you have an extra long or extra deep set, such as a long twin or double pillow-top mattresses. Use the table below for help in measuring: Width of Mattress Length of Mattress Right Side Drop Bottom Edge Drop Left Side Drop Width of Finished Quilt Pillow Fold (add 10 ) Length of Finished Quilt When measuring the drops, just remember that your quilt should at least cover 1 below the mattress to hide the join with the box spring. Only add the pillow fold amount if you want to tuck your pillows under the quilt. Some other things to remember when figuring out the size of your quilt are: 1. Batting can shrink. If you don t pre-wash it before using it, your quilt can shrink up to 3% in the wash. 2. If you use unwashed fabrics, your finished quilt can shrink up to 5% in the wash. If desired you can work around this possible shrinkage by figuring out the rate and adding enough to your borders to make up the difference. Happy Quilting! Origin of Thanksgiving Day in Canada: The native peoples of the Americas held ceremonies and festivals to celebrate the completion and bounty of the harvest long before European explorers and settlers arrived in what is now Canada. Early European thanksgivings were held to give thanks for some special fortune. An early example is the ceremony the explorer Martin Frobisher held in 1578 after he had survived the long journey in his quest to find a northern passage from Europe to Asia. Many thanksgivings were held following noteworthy events during the 18th century. Refugees fleeing the civil war in the United States brought the custom of an annual thanksgiving festival to Canada. From 1879, Thanksgiving Day was held every year but the date varied and there was a special theme each year. The theme was the "Blessings of an abundant harvest" for many years. However, Queen Victoria's golden and diamond jubilees and King Edward VII's coronation formed the theme in later years. From the end of the First World War until 1930, both Armistice Day and Thanksgiving Day were celebrated on the Monday closest to November 11, the anniversary of the official end of hostilities in World War I. In 1931, Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day and Thanksgiving Day was moved to a Monday in October. Since 1957, Thanksgiving Day has always been held on the second Monday in October. Thanksgiving Day in Canada is linked to the European tradition of harvest festivals. A common image seen at this time of year is a cornucopia, or horn, filled with seasonal fruit and vegetables. The cornucopia, which means "Horn of Plenty" in Latin, was a symbol of bounty and plenty in ancient Greece. Turkeys, pumpkins, ears of corn and large displays of food are also used to symbolize Thanksgiving Day. Shared by Lynn G.
