Welcome ew Members Jeannine Grabowska Nena Reed A Message From Our President Happy May Day and Mother s Day. I m happy to announce that the rent for our Apache School meeting room has been reduced by 50% for the year. Thank you Deb Scott for your work on this and to the Sierra Vista School Board. This will enable us to concentrate more on our community service projects. We have 126 paid members so far this year. If you have not renewed your membership, please do so. We have a lot of exciting programs, workshops and other events planned. You don t want to miss these. Thank you to Karen Horton for volunteering to be our Blue Moon Coordinator. Blue Moon meetings occur when there is a 5th Monday or Wednesday in a month. (Mon: 7/29, 9/30, 12/30; Wed: 5/29, 7/31, 10/30, 1/29/13.) A quilt block or project is presented and the fabric provided (from the guild stash) to make the blocks. They are then made into quilts for the community. If you would like to volunteer to present a Blue Moon project, please contact Karen. Happy Sewing in May! Nora Eaken
2 Page 2 Hummingbird Stitchers Quilt Guild Newsletter May 2013 Condolences Our Condolences to Ellen Pluta on the death of her brother. Beads of Courage We have now donated over 700 Beads of Courage bags. Kits are still available. Thank you for all your contributions! May 4 Fundraiser Please remember to come by the Fellowship Hall at the United Methodist Church (corner of Buffalo Soldiers Trail and St. Andrews) Saturday, May 4, to support our table and enjoy the many items for sale at the other tables. This is the Community Choir's Spring Fundraiser. We'll be introducing our 2014 raffle quilt and selling assorted quilted items. Tell your friends. Times are 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. See you there. A big thanks to our workers for making this possible. -Maryann for the Boutique Committee Boys and Girls Club We will be working with the Boys and Girls Club in the afternoons during June and July. Volunteers needed. Please contact Shirley Fogle if you can help. Workshop ews Our next workshop will be on July 20th with Susie Weaver. Please save the date and plan to attend. All of those entered have been notified that their entry was received and that they are "on the list!" If you THOUGHT that you had entered and did NOT receive a verification, please send Gail Fisher an DecArtistAZ@cox.net. We don't want anyone to miss out on the fun & prizes!!" Retreat ews The April retreat ladies have made 9+ quilt tops to donate. They had a contest with each person given 3-1/2 yards of fabric. The challenge was to make a quilt about 50x70 to be donated for charity. Linda Yauchzy won the prize, with Dan and Cheryl and their staff from the Huachuca Christian Camp as the judges. The hope is to have the retreat group in October (October 11-14) do the bindings. See some of the quilts at the Monday night meeting. STABLE: Stash Accumulation Beyond Life Expectancy April Raffle Winners - Congratulations! HSQG has purchased an AccuQuilt Studio Fabric Cutter. The Studio cuts up to10 layers of fabric at a time. We also purchased a cart for this large cutter and an adapter so that we can use the GO dies we already own. American Quilter s Society (AQS) has announced they will be holding a QuiltWeek in Phoenix 2/5-8, PHD: Project Half Done

7 May 2013 Hummingbird Stitchers Quilt Guild Newsletter Page 7 Hummingbird Stitchers Quilt Guild Minutes Business Meeting April 3, 2013 Meeting called to order at 9:05am by Nora Eaken, President. Minutes of the last Business Meeting ( ) were approved as printed in the newsletter. Candy Jennings so moved and Lynne Bie seconded. Old Business: There was none. New Business: The Treasurer, Jane Bourne, reported on the 2013 Quilt Show and final Income Statement for the year. The Treasurer outlined a provisional budget for approval by the membership. Maryann Lepic moved to accept the provisional budget with the final budget being published in the next newsletter. Doreen Dolan seconded and the motion carried. The Guild voted to have a Quilt Show in Coni Tiefel so moved and Candy Jennings seconded. There being no further business, the business meeting was adjuourned at 9:20am. Karen Horton moved and Maureen Ciezki seconded. Community Quilts There is a shortage of quilts to donate to the community. We have lots of fabric if you want to work on community quilts on your own, or please come on May 15 and help us sew tops. We also have two quilts cut and ready to be sewn.
8 Page 8 Hummingbird Stitchers Quilt Guild Newsletter May 2013 Have You Renewed Your HSQG Membership? Recipes from ancy Banz Texas Sheet Cake - White 2 sticks butter 1 cup water 2 cups flour 2 cups sugar 2 eggs, beaten 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tsp. vanilla* 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking powder Melt the butter with the water in a glass mixing bowl in the microwave and bring to a boil. Stir in the flour, sugar, sour cream, vanilla extract, salt and baking soda. Stir in the eggs last. Pour into a greased and floured 15 x 10 x 1 baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for minutes. Cool for 20 minutes. White Texas Sheet Cake Frosting 1 stick butter 1/4 cup half n half 1 tsp. vanilla* 4 oz. cream cheese 4-4 1/2 cups powdered sugar Use the same bowl and put butter and half n half into the microwave until boiling. Add the extract and powdered sugar and beat. Pour over warm cake. *can substitute almond extract Texas Sheet Cake - Chocolate 2 cups sugar 2 cups flour; sifted 1 stick of butter 1/2 cup oil 4 T. cocoa 1 cup cold water 1/2 cup buttermilk 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 tsp. baking soda 2 eggs Mix the sugar and flour well and put aside. In a glass mixing bowl combine the butter, oil, cocoa and cold water and bring to a boil in the microwave. Pour over flour and sugar mixture. Stir in the buttermilk, cinnamon, salt, vanilla and baking soda. Stir in the eggs last. Pour into a greased and floured 15 x 10 x 1 baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for minutes. Chocolate Texas Sheet Cake Frosting: 1 stick butter 4 T. cocoa 5 T. half n half 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 box powdered sugar Five minutes before the cake is done put butter, cocoa and half n half in a glass mixing bowl and microwave until boiling. Add the extract and powdered sugar and beat. Pour over hot cake.

Try rubbing a bit of contrasting chalk over the seamline area to highlight the stitches. Please feel free to submit articles, suggestions, patterns, or want ads to buy or sell anything quilt related.
