Fabric requirements are for fusible appliqué if using machine embroidery appliqué adjust fabric amounts accordingly. Background: 10 x 10" Backing: 10 x 10" Binding: 10 x 10" cut and squared Lower frosting appliqué: 3 x 6" Middle frosting appliqué: 2 x 5" Top frosting appliqué: 2 x 4" Cherry appliqué: 2 x 2" Cupcake bottom appliqué: 3 x 5" Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 fusible adhesive: 7 x 12" (18"wide) Sulky Tear-Easy stabilizer: 9 x 9" Batting: 10 x 10" Additional supplies and tools -Thread for piecing, satin stitching, and quilting. I used coordinating Sulky 40wt rayon thread for quilting and satin stitching. -You ll also need a rotary cutter and cutting mat, gridded transparent ruler, an iron, fabric and paper scissors, and a fine point marker for tracing the templates. 3 Let Them Eat Cupcakes! 8 round snack/mug mat If you d like to use machine embroidery appliqué to complete this project, the embroidery files are available to purchase here: Instructions 1. Refer to the circle template page for cutting instructions. From background fabric piece cut one 8" circle. 2. Trace the templates onto the paper side of your fusible adhesive leaving approximately ½ between tracings. Trace the dashed stitching lines, if desired. 3. Roughly cut the templates from the adhesive just outside of the traced line. 4. Place the adhesive templates onto the wrong side of their corresponding appliqué fabrics and fuse in place according to manufacturer s instructions. 5. Neatly cut the appliqués from the fabrics on the traced template lines. 6. Transfer the dashed stitching lines to the right side of the fabric with a non-permanent pen or pencil, if desired. You can use a light table or daylit window. 7. Peel the paper backing from the appliqués and arrange them on the background piece. Fuse appliqués into place. 8. Place the Sulky Tear-Easy stabilizer behind the appliqué sections and satin stitch the raw edges of the appliqués, using Sulky Premium 40 wt rayon thread. Satin stitch cupcake details on marked lines. Remove the stabilizer after stitching.. 9. Sandwich batting between top and backing with wrong sides of fabrics against batting. 10. Quilt as desired. 11. Because the mat has curved edges, you ll need to bind them with a strip cut on the bias. Use your preferred method to do this or follow the Bias Binding instructions. 4 B Continuous Bias Binding Instructions Create a continuous bias binding strip, economically. From binding fabric cut one 10 square to make a continuous binding strip. Cut the bias binding strip fabric square in half once diagonally (45 degree angle). Place the two triangular pieces right sides together along straight edge as shown in Illustration A. Press. Using a gridded transparent ruler, measure from the long edge and draw a parallel line every 2¼" on the wrong side of the fabric, as shown in Illustration B. Fold the marked piece right sides together to form a tube, aligning the edges and pinning the marked lines so one width of the binding extends beyond the edge on each side as shown in Illustration C. Sew the tube together and press the seam open. Cut on the marked line to make one continuous 2¼" -wide bias binding strip. Use this strip to bind curved edge. 7 Cherry Vanilla Cupcakes INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup butter (room temperature) 4 egg whites (room temperature) 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 3/4 cup buttermilk 1/3 cup maraschino cherry juice 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 12 maraschino cherries, halved 1 recipe Cherry-Almond Butter Frosting Maraschino cherries with stems (optional, for topping) A favorite from Better Homes and Gardens 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a medium bowl stir together flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. In a 2-cup glass measuring cup combine buttermilk and cherry juice; set aside. 2. In a large mixing bowl beat butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add sugar, vanilla, and almond extract; beat until combined. Add egg whites, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk mixture to beaten mixture, beating on low speed after each addition just until combined. 3. Spoon batter into prepared muffinpan/papers, filling each about two-thirds full. Use the back of a spoon to smooth out batter in cups. Press a cherry half into batter in each cup. 4. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until tops spring back when lightly touched. Cool cupcakes, in pan, on wire racks for 5 minutes. Remove cupcakes from pan. Cool completely on wire racks. 5. Using a pastry bag fitted with a large star tip, pipe Cherry- Almond Butter Frosting over tops of cupcakes. If desired, top with cherries. Makes 24 (2-1/2-inch) cupcakes. Artwork 2012 Patrick Lose Cherry Almond Butter Frosting INGREDIENTS A favorite from Better Homes and Gardens 1/2 cup butter, softened 4 cups powdered sugar 3 tablespoons maraschino cherry juice or milk 1/2 teaspoon almond extract Milk 1. In a large mixing bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Gradually add 1 cup of the powdered sugar, beating well. 2. Beat in maraschino cherry juice and almond extract. 3. Gradually beat in additional powdered sugar. If necessary, beat in additional juice or milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until frosting reaches a spreading consistency. Makes 2 cups frosting. Artwork 2012 Patrick Lose
