2 Go Fly a Kite Instructions Materials requirements for one 15 x 30 appliquéd banner These requirements are for non-directional prints Fabrics Light Blue: ½ yd (or 15 x 30 ) Medium Blue: ½ yd (or ¼ yd for binding and 5 x 9 for kite) Orange: 5 x 9 for kite Green: 5 x 7 for kite Red: 5 x 7 for kite White: ¼ yd or fat quarter for clouds Backing: 17 x 32 fabric of choice Other Materials Warm & Natural Cotton Batting: one 17 x 32 piece Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 fusible adhesive: 1 yd (12 wide) Thread for quilting and satin stitching For quilting and satin stitching I used a 90/14 topstitching needle. Four 16 lengths of grosgrain ribbon - one of each color in the kite. Cut the Fabrics From the Light Blue, cut the 15 x 30 background/quilt top. From the Medium Blue binding fabric, cut three 2½ wide strips from selvage to selvage. Prepare the Appliqué Templates

3 Lay the fusible adhesive, paper side up, over the appliqué templates and trace one of each of them onto the paper side allowing about ½ space between the traced templates. Roughly cut the templates out about ¼ outside of the traced line. Fuse the templates to the wrong sides of their corresponding fabrics. Neatly cut the appliqués from the fabrics on the traced lines of the adhesive paper. Remove the paper backing from the appliqués. Referring to the illustration or photo, arrange the appliqués on the right side of the quilt top. When you are satisfied with the placement of the appliqués, fuse them into place. Quilting Sandwich the batting between the wrong sides of the top and backing. Using a gridded acrylic ruler and Chaco Liner, draw parallel lines across the width of the banner, randomly spaced 1-2 inches apart. Using the chalk lines as a guide, stitch slightly wavy lines over them. I used Premium Sulky 40 wt rayon thread in a color to match the sky. Satin Stitching I used Premium Sulky 40 wt.black rayon thread. I satin stitched to finish the edges of these appliqués. Using a narrow stitch width (I use the 2.5 setting most often), and a stitch length as short and tight as you can handle, satin stitch around all of the appliqués. Using the photo or illustration as reference, lightly draw a curved line for the kite s tail. Satin stitch over the line. Binding and Finishing Join the three binding strips cut from the Medium Blue and bind in your usual manner. Cut each of the four grosgrain ribbons in half. Stitch the center point of each ribbon to the kite tail line, spacing them evenly down the tail (I used 7 ribbons). Tie the ribbons, knotting them in the center so they appear to be tied to the tail. Trim the ends to the desired length an angle. If the tail ribbons don t lay as you d like, a few invisible hand stitches will tack them in the position you d like. Arrange the turkey slices in even layers on top of the lettuce. 4. Sprinkle the carrots and tomato over the turkey slices. 5. Roll the tortillas into wraps. 6. Cut the wraps diagonally into bite-sized pieces and secure with toothpicks. Let it cool completely before spreading a large carton of Cool Whip over the top and sprinkling with one can of shredded coconut. 4. Chill well before serving.
