4 Signs of Summer 15 x 30 Door Banner or Wall Hanging What You ll Need Here s what you ll need to make one 15 x 30 appliqué door banner or wall hanging. These requirements are for non-directional prints. I used fabrics from the Handspray collection by RJR Fabrics for this project. Lime for Border: ¼ yd Turquoise for Background: ⅓ yd Yellow for Butterfly Wings: fat quarter Pink for Spots and Antennae: 14 x 14 Orange for Butterfly Body and Binding: ¼ yd Backing: 18 x 33 fabric of choice Warm & Natural Cotton Batting: one 18 x 33 piece I use Warm & Natural for the stability and body it gives the piece. This is especially nice for a hanging piece. Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 fusible adhesive (18 wide): 1 yard I use Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 because it s not too stiff in the finished piece and it s easy to stitch through without gumming up the needle. Thread for quilting, and (if desired) satin stitching I used Premium Sulky 12 wt. Blendables for quilting For quilting and satin stitching I used a 80/12 topstitching needle. This is good for stitching through multiple layers and fusible adhesive. Prepare the Applique Templates Lay the fusible adhesive, paper side up, over the appliqué templates and trace three of each template onto the paper side allowing about ½ space between them. Roughly cut out the templates out approximately ¼ outside of the traced line. Position the traced fusible adhesive templates to the wrong sides of the fabrics you ve chosen for them. When all of the required templates are positioned on their respective fabrics, fuse them into place following the instructions provided by the manufacturer of your fusible adhesive. Cut the appliqués from the fabrics, neatly, on the traced outlines. Do not remove the paper backing yet. Cut the Fabrics Use a rotary cutter, gridded acrylic ruler, and mat for cutting. From the Lime fabric Cut two 3¼ wide strips from selvage to selvage for the borders. From each strip, cut a 3¼ x 24½ vertical border piece. From the remainder of each of the two strips cut a 3¼ x 15 horizontal border piece. From the Turquoise fabric Cut a 9½ x 24½ rectangle for the center block/background.

Piece the Banner With the right sides of the fabrics together, stitch the long sides of the vertical border pieces to the long sides of the center block using a ¼ seam allowance.

5 Piece the Banner With the right sides of the fabrics together, stitch the long sides of the vertical border pieces to the long sides of the center block using a ¼ seam allowance. Press the seams toward the center block. In the same manner, stitch the long sides of the horizontal border pieces to the top and bottom of the center block unit. Press the seams toward the center block. Fuse the Appliques Remove the paper backing from the Spots of the Butterfly Wings appliqués. With the paper backing remaining on the Wings, and referring to the cover photo or illustration for placement, arrange the Spots on the Wings and fuse them into place. Remove the paper backing from the remaining appliqués and arrange the Butterfly Wings on the pieced banner/quilt top. Refer to the photo or illustration for placement and be sure to keep the Wings out of the seam allowance for the binding. Arrange the Body and Antennae appliqués in the same manner and, when you are satisfied with the placement of all of the appliqués, fuse them into place. Quilting Sandwich the batting between the top and backing and quilt as desired over the entire banner, including the appliqués. I used Sulky Blendables thread and a fairly dense loopy meandering path. Binding Use the three 2½ x 42 orange strips Right sides together, use diagonal seams to join the binding strips as shown below. Trim the seam allowances and press the seams open. Fold one end of the strip at a 45 degree angle to create a point and press. Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise with the wrong sides together and the long raw edges aligned. Press. Place the folded binding strip on one edge of the quilt top, aligning the raw edges of the quilt and the binding. Stitch through all the layers using a ¼ seam allowance. Stop stitching ¼ from the corner. Pivot and stitch a diagonal line to the corner as shown. Backstitch at least 2 stitches, remove the quilt from the machine, and clip the threads.

Stitch around the entire poster quilt, treating each corner as you did the first. When you return to where you started, stitch the binding past the second angled fold about a half inch.

6 Fold up the binding, as shown below, and finger crease the fold. Holding the creased fold in place, fold the binding down as shown below, right, and align the raw edges with the next side of the quilt. Start stitching again at the corner, through all of the layers. Stitch around the entire poster quilt, treating each corner as you did the first. When you return to where you started, stitch the binding past the second angled fold about a half inch. Backstitch at least 2 stitches and clip the threads. Cut off the excess binding. Turn the binding over the quilt edge, aligning the fold of the binding with the machine stitching you just finished. Sew the binding onto the backing. You can do this by machine, from the front, or by hand. In either case, miter the corners on the back side of the quilt also. If you choose to stitch the binding to the back by machine, lap the fold over the seam line used to attach the binding to the front. Then, stitch as close to the binding seam as possible from the front, catching the overlapped binding fold on the back. If I miss a spot or two, I just finish it by hand. Be sure to sign and display your artwork in a spot where it will prompt the most compliments! Sulky is a registered trademark of Sulky of America.

7 Mexicali Layered Dip Serves Note: If you can t find the avocado dip, it can be made using fresh avocados, sour cream, and the seasoning mix packets usually found in the produce department of your grocery store. ⅔ cup mayonnaise ¼ cup sour cream 1 1¼-ounce packet taco seasoning mix 1 9-ounce can bean dip 1 8-ounce container sour cream and avocado dip 2 cups shredded Mexican cheeses 5 sliced green onions 1 2¼-ounce can sliced black olives Stir together the mayo, sour cream, and taco seasoning mix and set aside. Spread the bean dip in the bottom of a 10 inch pie plate. Spread the avocado dip over it and then the mayo/taco seasoning blend in a layer over that. Top with the shredded cheeses, green onions, and olives. Chill. Serve with tortilla chips. Artwork 2009 Patrick Lose Zucchini Salad Serves medium sized zucchini, sliced 3 tomatoes cut into wedges 1 small red onion sliced and separated into rings 1 small green bell pepper sliced into strips ⅔ cup vinegar ½ cup sugar ¼ cup salad oil ¼ teaspoon celery seed ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper Combine the veggies in a large bowl. In a screw top jar or other air tight container, combine the vinegar, sugar, salad oil, celery seed, and salt and pepper. Cover and shake well. Pour over the veggies and toss to coat well.
