Item #87607 Fabrics Green: ⅓ yd for 2 blocks, 2 shamrocks and binding Light Green: 12 x 12 for 2 blocks, 2 shamrocks Ivory: ¹/₈ yd for block borders Backing: 14 x 14 fabric of choice Other Materials Warm & Natural Cotton Batting: one 14 x 14 piece Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 fusible adhesive: 12 x 12 Thread for quilting and satin stitching For quilting and satin stitching I used a 90/14 topstitching needle. Cut the Fabrics From Green, cut two 2½ strips, selvage to selvage, for the binding. Cut two 4½ x 5½ blocks. Set aside the remainder for the shamrocks. From Light Green, cut two 4½ x 5½ blocks. Set aside the remainder for the shamrocks. From the Ivory border fabric, cut two strips from selvage to selvage. From these strips, cut the block borders shown in the Piecing Diagrams: Four x 4 ½ short block borders Eight x 6 ½ long block borders

3 Piece the Top Using a ¼ seam, piece the quilt top as shown in the Piecing Diagrams that follow. Prepare the Appliqué Templates Lay the fusible adhesive, paper side up, over the shamrock appliqué template and trace four of them onto the paper side allowing approximately ½ space between the traced templates. Roughly cut the templates out approximately ¼ outside of the traced line. Fuse the templates to the wrong sides of their corresponding fabrics. Neatly cut the shamrock appliqués from the fabrics on the traced lines. Remove the paper backing from the appliqués. Referring to the illustration or photo, arrange the appliqués on the right side of the quilt top. When you are satisfied with the placement of the appliqués, fuse them into place. Quilting Sandwich the batting between the wrong sides of the top and backing and quilt as desired over the entire quilt, including the appliqués. I used Sulky Blendables thread and a loopy meander over the entire top. If you want your appliqués to have a raw, unfinished edge, the quilting will secure the appliqués and you can skip to binding. If you would like to finish the edges of the appliqués, go to the next step for satin stitching. Satin Stitching I used satin stitching to finish the edges of these appliqués. Using a narrow stitch width (I use the 2.5 setting most often), and a stitch length as short and tight as you can handle, satin stitch around all of the appliqués. I used Premium Sulky 40 wt. rayon thread in coordinating colors. Binding Join the two binding strips cut from the Green and bind in your usual manner. Sulky is a registered trademark of Sulky of America.

6 Corned Beef and Cabbage in a Crock 2-3 lbs. corned beef brisket with spice pack 3 cubes beef bouillon 4 cloves garlic, diced 2 whole cloves 4 carrots, sliced thick 6 white potatoes, halved, with skins 6 cups water 10 peppercorns 2 bay leaves 1 head cabbage cut in wedges A perfect St. Patrick s Day dinner. Combine corned beef and water in slow cooker. Add bouillon cubes, garlic, peppercorns, cloves and bay leaves. Cook on high for 3 to 4 hours or until meat is tender. Remove meat, cut into bite-sized pieces and return to broth. Add carrots and potatoes. Reduce heat to low and simmer another minutes. Add cabbage and cook for 20 more minutes or until veggies are tender. Remove the bay leaves. Serve with fresh baked soda bread. This recipe can be cooked on low for about 7 hours but don t add the vegetables until the last hour. Artwork 2010 Patrick Lose Irish Soda Bread 4 cups flour 1 tablespoon baking soda 1 tablespoon sugar 2 1/3 teaspoons salt 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar 2 cups buttermilk 1 tablespoon butter (melted for brushing) Great with Irish Stew or Corned Beef and Cabbage Thoroughly combine baking soda, sugar, flour, salt and cream of tartar. Make a well in the center. Add buttermilk and mix lightly and quickly with a fork. Turn out onto a lightly floured board and knead for one minute. Shape into a circle, about 1 1/2 inch thick. Place on a greased cooke sheet. Slash a large cross in the top. Bake in a preheated 375 F oven for minutes. Remove from oven. Brush top with butter while still warm. Cool on a wire rack.
