An added 1/8 to 1/2 yard is added to all yardages to account for shrinkage, straightening, cutting errors and prints that may require special cutting to get the best results. You should protect your investment in time and fabric by making sample blocks before cutting into your fabric because Exclusively Quilters will take no responsibility for replacing fabrics. Shops who wish to kit this design are responsible for figuring yardage for their kits if they wish to reduce yardages. NOTE: This is NOT a project for beginners! Cutting Directions: All measurements based on a 1/4" seam allowance. From the black floral fabric: Cut four 25-1/2" x 44" strips, recut into four 25-1/2" squares From the black scroll fabric: Cut four 6-1/2" x 44" strips for border - cut twelve Template J, four Template K and four Template L from strips From the gray scroll fabric: Cut eight 2-1/2 x 42 strips for binding Cut eight 1-1/2 x 42 strips for border From the black damask fabric: Cut six 6-1/2" x 44" strips for border - cut sixteen Template J and four 6-1/2 squares from strips Cut six 2-1/2" x 44" strips for borders From the white damask fabric: Cut six 2-1/2" x 44" strips for borders Template Cutting Directions: Using templates cut the following pieces from fabrics indicated: From black floral fussy cut sixteen Template D with flower motifs centered From white damask cut eight Template A and sixteen Template E From white cut sixteen Template C and thirty-two Template I From gray scroll cut eight Template A and sixteen Template H From gray damask cut sixteen Template F From black scroll cut sixteen Template B and sixteen Template G

2 Page 2 concave convex Center Background: 1. Lay out the 25-1/2" black floral squares in two rows of two squares each, forming a large square. Piece the squares into rows, then sew rows together. 2. The black floral center is a little larger than needed. Once the dahlia center is appliquéd on it, you will trim the center square. This allows for the possibility that the appliqué pulls in the sides of the background piece. Dahlia Center 1. Fold a Template A white damask piece in half lengthwise, right sides in. Stitch across the squared off top with a 1/4" seam allowance. Fold the point right side out and press flat. Repeat with remaining A white damask front back and gray scroll Template A pieces. 2. Stitch each prepared white damask Template A to right of each gray scroll Template A. Sew units into four sections with four pieces each. Lay out the sections as shown. Stitch sections into rows then sew rows together completing the dahlia center. Set aside. Dahlia: 1. The main part of the dahlia is pieced in curved rows that start on the inside center (Template B) and extend out to the outside edge (Template I). Note that the Template B pieces have a 1/2" seam allowance where the Template A pieces will overlap them. This gives you some leeway, to be sure the As overlap the Bs. 2. When piecing curved seams, lay the convex curve on the bottom face up. Lay the concave curve on top, face down. Line up the leading corner and take a couple of stitches. All seams are 1/4". Slowly, curve the top piece to match the bottom piece as you stitch. The pieces can be pinned together before sewing, but it generally does not give you any better results. These basic points on sewing curves should be used when sewing templates pieces to each other - as well as when sewing the large curved rows together. It is best to pin at least where the seams cross when stitching the long curved rows together. 3. Use the numbers in circles, found in the seam allowance of Template B through Template I, to know which seams to sew together. 4. Sew seam 1 on Template B 1 to seam 1 on Template C. 5. Sew seam 3 on Template D to seam 3 on Template E. 6. Sew seam 5 on Template F to seam 5 on Template G. 7. Combine these units at seams 2 and 4. Make a total of sixteen of these curved 4 pieced sections Stitch a Template H piece to a Template I piece at seam 7. Add another Template I piece at seam 8. Make a total of sixteen of these edge units

3 Page 3 9. Stay stitch along the outside curve of the edge units, a scant 1/4". Press the curved edge to wrong side, just past the stay stitching so the stitching does not show on front of unit. By doing this step now, the curve of the outside edge will be easier to manage when the entire dahlia is together - even if you have pressed the curve flat when sewing the curved strips together. 10. Add an edge unit to rest of the curved strip along seam Combine quarter-circle sections into half-circle sections. 14. Stitch two halves together along both sides Using the same principles of curved seam piecing mentioned earlier - sew the curved sections into groups of two as shown. Match the seam allowances as much as possible. 12. Combine groups of two to create quarter-circle sections. 15. Lay the prepared center on the center of the dahlia - refer to the diagram for color placement of the A pieces in relation to the rest of the dahlia. Hand or machine appliqué in place. 16. Center dahlia on prepared background. Pin under the curved outside edge. If needed, clip or remove stay-stitching if the curve is too tight. Hand or machine stitch the dahlia to the background. Trim background to 48-1/2" square. 17. Carefully remove the background from behind the dahlia, leaving at least 1/2" around all edges. This step can be done after the borders are added, to reduce the amount of fraying.

4 Page 4 Assembly: 1. Cut two 2-1/2" x 44" black damask strips each into two equal lengths. Sew each half-length strip end-to-end with a full-length strip. Add borders to the right and left sides. Press and trim excess from these and all successive border additions. Add remaining black damask borders to the top and bottom of quilt. 2. Make and add a 2-1/2" white damask border in the same manner as the first border. 3. Piece four borders each with four black damask Template J, three black scroll Template J, one black scroll Template K and one black scroll Template L. With black scroll edge next to quilt center, sew borders to right and left sides of quilt. K J J J L J J J J 4. Sew 6-1/2 black damask squares on both ends of two remaining pieced borders. With black scroll edge next to quilt center, sew these to top and bottom of quilt. 5. Make four borders, each with two 1-1/2" x 44" gray scroll strips sewn together end-to-end. Add borders to right and left, then to top and bottom of quilt. Finishing: 1. Cut backing into two equal lengths. Sew the two lengths together along selvage edges. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt or tie as desired. 2. Prepare binding from eight 2-1/2" x 44" gray scroll strips. Sew strips together into one long binding strip. Press strip in half lengthwise. 3. Carefully trim backing and batting even with quilt top. 4. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew binding to top of quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where these two loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding together right sides together. Trim seam to 1/4" and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt. 5. Turn binding to back of quilt and blind stitch in place.
