Skill Level: Intermediate Finished Size: 16-½" 72-½" Number and Size of Finished Blocks: (72) 4-½'' squares Designer/Maker/Machine Quilter: Sharon Holland Material: Tapestry and Coastline by Sharon Holland and Pure Elements from Art Gallery Fabrics NECESSITIES 1 fat quarter each: TAP Mudcloth Tanger (orange crosses) TAP Rosewood Zinc (gray roses) TAP Catalyst Minthe (mint cats) PE-457 Dried Carrot (orange solid) TAP Eternal Elan (trees on white) CTL Netting String (ecru lines) From each of the orange crosses, gray roses, mint cats, and orange solid: Cut (2) 4-½'' x 21'' strips then, referring to the Template Cutting Diagrams, cut into 8 A template shapes From each of the trees on white and ecru lines: Cut (3) 4-½'' x 21'' strips then, referring to the Template Cutting Diagrams, cut into 18 B template shapes From each of the yellow hexagons and yellow/multi floral: Cut (3) 4-½'' x 42'' strips then cut into 44 B template shapes From the brown crosses: Cut (4) 4-½'' x 42'' strips then cut into 40 A template shapes From the orange lines: Cut (2) 4-½'' x 42'' strips then cut into 20 B template shapes. Cut (5) 2-¼'' x 42'' strips for binding. ½ yard each: TAP Tracery Ochre (yellow hexagons) TAP Paper Flowers Aurora (yellow/multi floral) ⅝ yard TAP Mudcloth Earth (gray crosses) ⅔ yard TAP Dhurrie Luminary (orange lines) includes binding 1-¼ yards backing 22'' x 78'' batting Template material Read through all instructions before beginning. Sew pieces right sides together and use a ¼'' seam allowance throughout unless otherwise stated. PREP Cut all strips from selvage to selvage. Remove the selvages. Check that the templates are printed full size Template Cutting Diagrams BLOCKS 1. Referring to the Piecing Diagram on page 2, fold a brown crosses A piece and orange lines B piece in half as shown. Finger press to crease. Pin the B piece right sides together to the A piece with crease lines matching. Match a straight edge of the B piece to the straight edge of the A piece and pin. Repeat with the other straight edge. Sew with the needle in the down position, stopping and adjusting as you stitch around the curve. Keep the raw edges of the pieces even around the curve and sew slowly to ease in fullness. Press toward the B piece. Repeat on the opposite side with a yellow hexagon B piece. Press toward the A piece. Make a total of 10 brown crosses/orange lines/ yellow hexagon combination blocks.

3 Make 10 Make 10 BIND 1. To make the double-fold binding, place (2) 2-¼ x 42 orange lines strips right sides together at right angles. Sew with a diagonal seam.

Refer to the Block Combination Diagrams, stitch a total of 62 more blocks. Note: When sewing blocks, stitch the darker fabric B piece first and press toward the B piece.

The blocks that use the same print for both B pieces need to have one seam pressed toward the B piece and the other seam pressed toward the A piece.

3 3 Make 10 Make 10 BIND 1. To make the double-fold binding, place (2) 2-¼ x 42 orange lines strips right sides together at right angles. Sew with a diagonal seam. Continue adding strips in the same manner to make one long binding strip. Trim seams to ¼. Press seams open. 2. Fold the strip lengthwise in half with wrong sides together. Press. Piecing Diagram Make 2 Make 2 Block Combination Diagram 2. Refer to the Block Combination Diagrams, stitch a total of 62 more blocks. Note: When sewing blocks, stitch the darker fabric B piece first and press toward the B piece. Add the lighter B piece last and press toward the A piece. This will help to nest seams during assembly. The blocks that use the same print for both B pieces need to have one seam pressed toward the B piece and the other seam pressed toward the A piece. The block can be rotated during assembly to nest seams as needed. ASSEMBLE Referring to the Table Runner Assembly Diagram on page 4 and noting orientation and placement, sew the blocks together into 18 rows of 4 blocks each. Join the rows. QUILT Cut and piece the backing to measure 22 x 78 using a ½ seam allowance. Press the seam(s) open to reduce bulk. Press the quilt top and backing well. Layer the backing wrong side up, the batting with edges matching the backing, and the quilt top centered right side up. Baste the layers together. Quilt as desired. Starting at the center of one edge of the quilt top, place the folded binding on the right side of the top with raw edges aligned. Leaving 12 of the binding strip free, begin stitching with a ¼ seam allowance. Sew to the corner and backstitch ¼ from the edge. Remove the quilt from the machine. Fold the strip up at a 45 angle and then back down over itself, lining up the raw edges to make a mitered corner. 3. Resume stitching, beginning at the top edge of the new side and continuing around the quilt to the next corner. In the same manner as step 2, sew to the corner and backstitch, remove the quilt from the machine, fold the strip, then continue around the quilt to within 12 of the starting point. Backstitch. Remove the quilt from the machine. 4. Lay the quilt top on a flat surface. Bring the loose ends of the binding together so the binding and the quilt lie flat. Fold the binding ends back onto themselves

4 so the folded edges touch but do not overlap. Finger press to crease. Open the binding.

Pin the ends together as shown. Draw a diagonal line from the corner intersections. Sew on the line.

Check and trim seam allowance to ¼ when satisfied. Pin the binding down and sew to the remaining edge of the quilt top.

Draw a diagonal line from the corner intersections. Sew on the line. Before trimming the seam allowance, refold the binding and check that it lies flat on the quilt top. Adjust the stitching if needed. Check and trim seam allowance to ¼ when satisfied. Pin the binding down and sew to the remaining edge of the quilt top.
