1 QUILTED FRIDGE FRAMES Designs by Nancy Richoux Show off your grandchildren in a themed fridge frame. PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS Skill Level: Beginner Frame Sizes: 4/" x 6/" and 4/" x 0/" SUPPLIES All-purpose thread to match fabrics Quilting thread Brown and white embroidery floss 6 (3/4") button magnets or adhesive magnetic strips for hanging Hot-glue gun with glue sticks 3/ yards /8"-wide tan satin ribbon Black and red fine-point fabric markers 3 (3/" x 5") photos (/" x 3/") photos Chalk pencil Tapestry needle Basic sewing tools and supplies COMPLETING THE SPORTS FRAME Step. Referring to Figure, draw three 3/" x 5" rectangles on A using a chalk pencil. FABRIC Measurements based on 43" usable fabric width. Scraps brown, golden brown, green and white fabrics Fat eighth multicolor print Fat eighth light blue print Fat quarter tan tonal Fat quarter red mottled Fat quarter royal blue print #STRIPS/ PIECES CUT Appliqué pieces as per patterns 3/4" x 9" G 3/4" x 7" H 3/4" x 3" B 3/4" x 7" C 3/" x 9/" A 3/" x 5/" F Flannel for batting 8" x 4" 8" x 0" 8" x 0" backing " x 9" I " x 7" J Appliqué pieces as per patterns 8" x 4" backing " x 3" D " x 7" E Step. Sew a B strip to a D strip; press seam toward D. Repeat to make two B-D strips. Repeat with C and E strips; press seams toward E. Step 3. Center and sew a B-D strip to opposite short ends and C-E strips to opposite long edges of A, mitering corners as shown in Figure. Trim seam to /4"; press seam open. Step 4. Lightly trace the appliqué pieces of your choice from those given onto the right side of fabric scraps; cut out, leaving a /8" /4" seam allowance beyond the marked lines.

3 Step 5. Turn under the edges of each appliqué shape and baste to hold. Step 6. Add detail lines to each piece using red fabric marker for softball and black fabric marker for basketball and soccer ball; fill in several hexagons on the soccer ball with black fabric marker referring to the Placement Diagram. Using strands white embroidery floss and a stem stitch, stitch detail lines on the football. from the back, " from the corner of a marked photo rectangle and /8" away from the marked line of number and back down to the back at number, leaving a 4" tail on the back side. Repeat, coming up at 3 and down at 4, up at 5 and down at 6, and up at 7 and down at 8, always /8" away from the marked line. Note: Be sure the ribbon lies flat and is not twisted. Tie ends in a square knot on the back side and trim. Repeat for all photo areas. Step 7. Arrange and hand-stitch the appliqué pieces on A referring to the Placement Diagram and photo for placement. Note: Do not place pieces inside or too close to the marked chalk lines. Step 8. Mark diagonal lines " apart across the top with chalk pencil as shown in Figure 3. Note: Do not draw lines on appliqués or borders. Step 4. Hot-glue three button magnets to the top of the project back. Step 5. Tuck photos under ribbon corners and hang on a refrigerator or metal filing cabinet to display. Step 9. Sandwich the 8" x 4" flannel rectangle between the same-size backing piece and the appliquéd top; baste to hold layers together. COMPLETING THE SCHOOLTIME FRIDGE FRAME Step. Cut and prepare apple and leaf shapes for appliqué. Step 0. Quilt on the marked lines and outline-quilt around the appliquéd shapes and in the ditch of border seams. Trim flannel even with edges of the quilted top. Trim backing 5/8" wider than quilted top. Step. Press under /4 on all sides of the backing piece. Bring the excess backing to the right side and hand-stitch in place on the outside border strips. Step. Cut three 4" lengths of /8"-wide tan satin ribbon. Thread ribbon into a tapestry needle. Step. Referring to Figure 5, mark the placement for two /" x 3/" photos on the F rectangle using a chalk pencil. Step 3. Place an apple and leaf motif on each side of the marked lines, again referring to Figure 5 for positioning. Step 3. Referring to Figure 4, pull ribbon through Step 4. Complete the Schooltime Fridge Frame as for the Sports Fridge Frame using smaller flannel and backing pieces, two 4" lengths of ribbon and bringing ribbon up from back only /" away from the corners of the marked photo rectangles. MITERING BORDER CORNERS Making mitered corners on borders is a bit more difficult than adding butted border strips. Follow these simple steps to create a perfect miter every time. Step. Join border strips; press seams toward darker fabric. Step 6. Take one border and fold it back at a 45- degree angle, making sure that the seams align as shown (Photo 4); press to make a crease in the border. 4 Step. Center and pin joined border strips on sides, and top and bottom of the center piece to which they will be stitched. Step 7. Fold the project to make a 45-degree angle, pinning at seams to match; stitch on the creased lines on the strips as shown in Photos 5 and 6. Step 3. Mark a dot /4" from each side at each corner of center piece as shown in Photo. Step 4. Referring to Photo, sew center piece to borders starting at midpoint of sides, top and bottom and stopping at marked dot in corners of center piece. 5 6 Step 8. Open to check stitching; if the strips align perfectly, trim excess strips to /4" from stitching and press corner seam open to complete a perfect miter (Photo 7). Step 5. Place on ironing surface right side up as shown in Photo
