We already have the Texas heat and humidity to prove it, but we also have Parker County Peaches! I am fresh out of motivational or inspirational words so I thought I would share one of my favorite things to do with fresh peaches. We love homemade pancakes with fresh sliced peaches piled on. If you aren t a lover of simple foods like me, you could probably jazz it up with whipped cream, just plain cream or chopped nuts on top. Below is my recipe for pancakes. These turn out thick and cake-like (what I prefer) rather than thin or with a biscuit-like flavor. The batter should be thick for them to turn out thick and cakey. First peel and slice three to five peaches (depending on how big they are and how hungry you are) and stir in some sugar to your taste. Refrigerate until the pancakes are ready. Pancakes ½ cup white flour ½ cup whole wheat flour 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon (heaping, I like cinnamon!) ¼ cup chopped nuts 1 egg 7/8 cup buttermilk (half way between ¾ and 1 cup, too much makes thinner batter) 2 tablespoons oil 1 ½ tablespoons honey ¼ teaspoon vanilla Combine dry ingredients and nuts in a smaller bowl and mix them together. Beat the egg in a larger bowl and add the rest of the wet ingredients. Stir together well to dissolve the honey. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and gently stir together. Do not over stir or beat the mixture. Heat the griddle with a little oil. Pour on about ¼ cup batter per pancake. I use a gravy serving ladle and get seven or eight small pancakes about four or five inches in diameter. Cook two minutes per side. Remember pancakes are good for dinner, as well as breakfast. Hope you give these a try and enjoy while we have our fresh peaches! Mary Williams

2 Quilters Guild of Parker County General Meeting Minutes May 17, 2018 The meeting was called to order at 7 pm by President Mary Williams. Minutes: The minutes from April 19 were accepted with no corrections. The treasurer report is available to view from Judy McDonald. ANNOUNCEMENTS Paula Hunt announced that the guild has been working with the local magazine Hoopla. She will be writing a monthly column featuring members of the guild. The recent issue featured Beverly Lindsey. Other upcoming columns will be on JoLynn O Neal, Evelyn Mathis and Joyce Coney. She passed out copies to the members present at the meeting. The membership booklet is now available. They can be picked up from Dartle Atherton or Janette Duke at the membership table. All members are asked to check their personal information for any errors or changes. Mary Williams announced that fabric is still available for the Presidents Mini-quilt challenge for the quilt show. Please make sure you have a label on your quilt with your name. Workshops will be starting at 8:30 a.m. CORRESPONDENCE Mary Williams read a thank you note from CASA thanking us for our baby and children quilts. Two notes from children at the Pythian Home were also read. There was also a thank you note recognizing our donation to the bereavement committee at North Side Baptist Church in memory of Katherine Dykes. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS: 2018 Donation Quilt: Beverly Lindsey Beverly reminded everyone to pick up their donation quilt envelopes. Members are expected to sell $30 of tickets. The donation quilt helps defray the cost of speakers and comfort quilt supplies during the year. Comfort Quilts: Judy Fitzgerald Judy thanked the members for their participation in the yearly sew-in in April. She distributed quilts at Grace House, Hilltop Rehabilitation Center and the Pythian Home. Current need is for wheelchair quilts for men and women. Recommended size is 36x42 inches.

3 Minutes Cont. Baby and child size quilts are also always needed. Batting will be available next month for members for these small sizes. If you need batting for larger quilts please call Judy. There are still some kits available for lap and twin sized quilts. Mary Williams has rewritten the pattern Four on the Floor for a baby quilt. Programs and Workshops: Becky Klein and Nancy Martin There will be a Friday workshop by Maria Hall. The workshop will be on using panels and large print fabrics in quilts. Nancy is at the sign up table with more information. Doris Rice will be here in June for a trunk show on Texas Treasures. In July Sharon Holliday will be presenting a program on scrap quilts called Sourdough Quilts. July 21. It will be a scrappy stars quilt. Her workshop will be on Saturday, August will be our annual Schoolhouse. Quilt Show: Anita Ruthenberg The quilt show will be September Donations are needed for raffle baskets. These can be brought to meetings. The Country Store organizers are continuing to accept items for the store. Show and Tell: A number of quilts were shown. Many were donations for the comfort quilt program. There were also quilts using panels that aligned with the speaker for the evening. Membership: 68 members were present. There were 10 visitors. 4 renewals were received as well as 2 new memberships. There were 54 fat quarters in the raffle. Next month the theme is yellows and blues. Maria Hall presented a program called No Pattern, No Problem, using panels and large prints in quilts. Judy Fitzgerald moved to adjourn the meeting. Andrea Killius seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 pm. 4 2018 Programs and Workshops June Doris Rice, Quilting Queen Designs Program: Texas Beauties Trunk Show. July Sharon Holliday, Sourdough Quilts Program: Sourdough Quilts. This will be a trunk show of over 30 quilts showing numerous ways to make scrappy quilts, including squares and strips of various sizes, 4-patches, half-square triangles, irregular sized strings, row quilts, medallion quilts, scrappy block exchanges with friends using found fabric like men s shirts, and be sure to save those selvages! Workshop (Saturday, July 21, North Side Baptist Church, 910 N. Main St.): Starstruck. You will make large scrappy star blocks. This will be a good workshop to combine the blocks into a group quilt. August Schoolhouse. We will have several teachers from our guild members to show you tips and tricks, and a project or two Quilt Show Keep working on your quilts for our quilt show in September. I will have volunteer signup sheets at the July guild meeting. We will have lots of fun jobs and will everyone s help. I All entries must have a fabric ID or label attached to the lower right corner of the back and must have the name of the quilt and the owner s name on it. Please cover the label on all quilts which will be judged with a piece of fabric (muslin is fine) attached with safety pins. Our bed turning will feature quilts from our past presidents with the theme of Quilts with a Story. Kathleen Tillman will chair the bed turning. Past presidents; please provide a quilt or 2 to Kathleen with a short story. Keep busy! Anita Ruthenberg

5 Comfort Quilt Comfort quilts is doing very well thanks to all the members who are making the quilts needed for our charities. Last month I had asked for wheelchair quilts for men but ended up needing both men and women and you all came through. We have a need for the smaller quilts right now and to help you get those accomplished I will have the batting needed for the three sizes of small quilts. The batting will be cut 40 x 45 and that will cover the small quilts. I will also have the kits for the twins and throws with a piece of batting for each one, the size needed. I have delivered 33 quilts this past month and each place that I went to was so appreciative of our efforts. I was told by the ladies at Grace House that these quilts that we provide to them are sometimes the only thing that the new mothers have that is handmade. So they are very excited when they get to pick out a quilt for their new baby. I did a trunk show for the patients at Hill Top Nursing Home and they were very happy with what they saw. Some of the ladies remember making quilts themselves and were telling stories about how their mothers taught them to quilt. Please keep up the good work and I know we will have a great Comfort Quilt program this year. Judy Fitzgerald MEMBERSHIP There were 68 members and 10 visitors at the May 17th meeting. Two of our visitors became members. We welcome Gretchen Gaskell and Carrie Wallis to the guild. A special Thank You to Jo Lynn O Neil for providing the door prizes. Lora Abrams won the members door prize, Kristen Ullstrom for visitors and Judy Fitzgerald for wearing her name tag. We hope to see everyone at the June 21 meeting. Dartle Atherton Janette Duke Veterans Quilt We once again are making small lap size and wheelchair quilts for our local veterans in Weatherford Nursing Homes. Sandra McKee and Becky Klein have already taken quilts to Holland Lake Home and Santa Fe. We need about 17 for one more home. If you can help please do. 6 HELP!! DONATIONS NEEDED FOR RAFFLE QUILT BASKETS Please clean your sewing room and sort through your fabric stash! We welcome donations of any gently used quilting supplies/equipment, patterns, books and fabric to assemble the three large raffle quilt baskets for the Quilt Show. Beginning this month, we will have a laundry basket labeled for you to donate items for the raffle baskets. Beth Collins and Shirley Reagan are co-chairs for the raffle baskets. They are willing to accept any sewing/quilting related items that you would like to donate. Facebook Administration Some of you may not be aware, but the Guild has a Facebook account. Just search Quilter s Guild of Parker County and check it out. However, a Facebook account requires care and feeding, also known as Administration. If anyone has experience specifically with a business account (as opposed to your personal account), and is willing to help administer our Facebook account, please contact Mary Williams at or Paula Hunt at Quilt Show Country Store Workers for the County Store are: Susie Kirkland, Mary Sears, and Jeannie Garvin. We are collecting items at meetings, and have been given several items already. The more things we have to sell, the more money we will make.
