1 Newsletter #1 August 2017 Yale Alumni Service Crps Service Prgram t Frt Mjave 2017 Dear YASC Frt Mjave 2017 Participants, We are s glad that yu have registered t jin us in Frt Mjave in Octber. Preparatin is currently underway t make sure that we have a great set f prjects planned n the reservatin and that they will be meaningful and impactful. I knw that a lt f yu have been lking frward t this trip fr quite sme time, and I m glad t finally get a chance t cmmunicate mre frequently. In ur first newsletter, I d like t tell yu a little bit abut ur grup leaders and prvide backgrund infrmatin n Frt Mjave Indian Tribe. This trip is unique in that ur grund partner is the cmmunity itself, and ur grup leaders have started wrking directly with tribal representatives t understand the lcal issues. It is these cmmunity leaders that are ging t drive ur activities based n the needs and desires f the tribe. Over the next tw and a half mnths, ur pace f preparatin will increase. Keep in mind that the nature f ur prjects is currently being reviewed by ur prject and tribal leaders. I knw that many f yu are already in tuch with grup leaders. We will be able t give yu a mre detailed verview f these activities in newsletter 2. We will als schedule an nline Q&A sessin smetime in September s please stay tuned fr details. Crystal is a business analytics prfessinal and recently earned a Master f Science in Business Analytics frm NYU Stern. She has mre than 10 years f experience in ecmmerce, prduct management and digital marketing. Crystal is a New Haven native and currently lives in New Yrk City. In additin t vlunteering with the YASC, Crystal is actively invlved in her cmmunity thrugh her church. Lee Crbin 91 West Bthbay Harbr, ME Prfessin: Frmer cartgrapher and graphic designer C-leader f Educatin Prject Jill f all trades, master f nne. Then went back t schl t get her undergraduate degree at Yale 91 (while her kids were in cllege simultaneusly in CO), majring in gelgy/envirnmental studies, then went n t law schl in CO. Practiced law fr a few years (estate planning, real estate, family law including children guardian wrk), but then became emplyed by the Fed Gv t (State Dept) in their passprt ffice in Prtsmuth, NH, where she fcused n citizenship issues, until retirement 3 years ag. What s retirement? Fr the first 2+ years she wrked part-time in the membership/develpment ffice f the nn-prfit, Castal Maine Btanical Gardens, and nw substitute teaches whenever pssible in a lcal elementary schl and wrks part-time at a lcal YMCA in their membership department. When nt wrking, she lves t play with her dg and cats, play tennis, sail (n ther peple s bats), pwer walk smetimes cmpetitively, and hrseback ride (fr fun). Her 2 kids are grwn up and she has 4 grandkids! 4 Pam Crimmins 84 Prfessin: Fine art underwater phtgrapher and art educatr C-leader f Educatin Prject Pamela Crimmins was brn in New Yrk City and raised in Cnnecticut. She studied bth painting and phtgraphy as an undergraduate at Yale. After graduatin, she served as an intern phtgrapher at the American Embassy in Rabat, Mrcc. Upn her return, she mved t New Yrk City, where she cntinued t paint and phtgraph and c-directed a nn-prfit that created murals with inner-city NYC children. She began taking pictures underwater in 1996 while teaching her children hw t swim. Since then, her wrk has been exhibited and cllected natinally. Pamela has taught art in NYC public schls and ther venues fr 25 years and has a master s degree in K-12 art educatin frm Brklyn Cllege. She lives in Manhattan. This is her first trip with YASC. Ben Gebe Prfessin: Interim Exec. Directr, American Indian Cmmunity Huse, Inc., Exec. Directr, Yanktn Siux C-leader f Entrepreneurship Prject Ben Gebe was brn and raised n the Rsebud Siux Reservatin in Suth Dakta. He is an enrlled member f the Yanktn Siux Tribe and is very active in the Native cmmunity in Mntreal, NYC and n the Reservatin. Chairman f the Bard f Directrs f the American Indian Cmmunity Huse, Inc. in NYC and an active member f the 1st Peple's Huse n campus. He has an MSW frm Clumbia University and a PhD frm McGill University. Funding member f the Nrth East 2 Spirit Sciety in NYC, which seeks t advance visibility f Native/Abriginal LGBT identity in a traditinal and culturally relevant manner thrugh training and cmmunity rganizing. Enjys a pw ww dance and sing n a traditinal Native/Abriginal drum. A Brief Backgrund f the Frt Mjave Indian Tribe Refer t attached pdf dcument fr cmplete details The Pipa Aha Macav ( peple wh live alng the river ) are ne f the mst imprtant Yumanspeaking tribes f the lwer Clrad River (River). While the bulk f the histrical ppulatin was cncentrated in the area nw ccupied by Bullhead City, Frt Mhave, Mhave Valley and unincrprated Mhave Cunty, AZ; Laughlin, NV; and Needles, CA; the Pipa Aha Macav riginally ccupied an area ranging frm suthern Nevada and Nrthwestern Arizna, dwn t near the current lcatin f the City f Parker, AZ, n bth sides f the River frm the muntains f Nrthwestern Arizna thrugh the Mjave Desert t near the current lcatin f Jshua Tree Natinal Mnument in Suthern Califrnia. Several bands existed within the Pipa Aha Macav. One in the nrth, ne in the central regin, and ne in the suth. They ften traveled great distances and were recgnized thrughut the Suthwest as being great runners. They rutinely traveled dwn t the Sea f Crtez, east int the muntains f central Arizna, and as far west as present-day Santa Barbara. Primarily practicing agriculture arund the flding seasns f the River, they grew crn, beans, 4

5 pumpkins, watermelns and cantalupes in the sft mud. This diet was supplemented with bighrn sheep, deer, rabbit, and fish frm the River. The Pipa Aha Macav wuld summer near the River and their fields, and live farther away frm the River in the winter t avid the spring flding. The earliest meeting f the Pipa Aha Macav and Eurpean explrers was likely arund 1540, with numerus explrers cmmenting n the great health, vigr and sciety f the natives. With Lt. A.G. Tassin in his Reprt n the Clrad Valley and Its Inhabitants Cmpiled While Statined at Camp Mhave in 1877, nting in ne passage that part f his, party came upn a large and pwerful tribe f Msa, Mjave Edward S. Curtis Indians living upn the banks f a great river, the men and wmen f splendid physique, calling themselves Mjave s and with whm, being treated with great hspitality and reverence, they remained lng enugh t recuperate and then descended the left (East) bank f the river uniting with the ther sectin f the expeditin near the present bundary between the United States and Mexic. The 1800 s ushered in a trubling era with the pening f the American frntier which resulted in the encrachment f migrants int Pipa Aha Macav territry. In 1858, Frt Mhave, a U.S. Army Pst, was established t guard American migrants crssing the Clrad River n the Califrnia Trail. During this time, many Mjave s were re-lcated suth t the Clrad River Indian Reservatin, which was established in The Mjave s that resisted relcatin and remained in the vicinity f Frt Mhave, were eventually granted a reservatin n bth sides f the Clrad River in These Mjave s became knwn as the Frt Mjave Indian Tribe. 5
