1 Art and Design Curriculum Overview
2 Purpose of study Art and Design Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. Aims The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils: produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms. Attainment targets By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.
3 Subject content Key stage 1 Pupils should be taught: to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

Drawing with different materials Materials (Link to Science Autumn 1- Everday materials and topic-buildings and Bears) Investigate materials for strength. Teach joining techniques. Design and make a stable structure. Look at and discuss work of famous architects e.g. Sir Christopher Wren-St. Paul s Cathedral Food Technology- Where does food come from? Discuss journey of food from shop to shelf. Discuss origins of foods-plant or animal. Visit to Green Grocer s. Test and evaluate products on the market-smoothies Hygiene practices. Using simple tools and techniques to prepare food. Design and make healthy food recipes. (links to topic Painting, shading and tinting Demonstrate and teach different techniques and skills (Links to mini-beast topic) Watercolour skills Cath Hodsman watercolours of insects odsman *Teach children different forms of shading techniques-stippling, scumbling, hatching, cross hatching, back and forth. Experiment. *Look at mini-beasts. Observational drawing. Use shading techniques. *Look at work of artist Cath Hodsman (wildlife artist) Discuss media-watercolour. How does she use shading? Children use watercolours to add colour to their mini beast line drawing from last week. *3D art-what is 3d art? Look at mini-beasts. Group work-papier mache balloon. Abstract Art Megan Coyle animals collage art (link to pets topic) *Look at examples of Coyle s work- The curious kitten, Boston Terrier. What media does she use? Compare similarities/differen ces with Hodsman. Draw outline of an animal/pet. *Look at video of collage technique. Children use different materials to collage and add texture to their picture. (magazine Photography as art work *Look at the work of David Hockney. What media does he use? (photographs) What effect does he create? Children use pre-cut features (eyes, ears, noses etc.) from magazines to create own art work in pairs. *Children to cut up large photograph of themselves at create their own David Hockney style photographic
5 and colour mixing demonstrate and teach different techniques and skills; pencils, pastels, charcoal and pens *Autumn leaveslook at shape, line, form, patterns. Observational drawing of leaves using 2 different mediae.g. pencil and charcoal. Evaluate. * Repeat using 2 more different media e.g. pen and pastel. when looking at different city buildings. How can we make them stronger/stiffer/ more stable? Design and make a city building (Link to English- Claude) healthy bodies) *paint mini-beast model (using colour mixing to get a good colour match) * Add detail to the mini-beast model. Gallery and evaluate. (6 weeks) strips, fabric etc) *Children to continue with animal collage. DT Project work (links to topic caring for pets) Design, make an evaluate a pet carrier to take your cat on holiday/to the vets. (3 weeks Art/3/4 weeks DT) artwork. Printing and pattern *Look at colours of autumn leaves. Colour mix. Talk about
6 adding white/black to make colours lighter/darker. Explore colour mixing of autumn colours. *Choose a leaf. Draw outline and mix colours to paint leaf. Evaluate. (6 lessons)
