1 KNES Art & Design Course Outline Year 7 Art & Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. Key Stage 3 students at KNES use colour, form, tone, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. Through art and design activities, they learn to make informed value judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions, becoming actively involved in shaping environments. They explore ideas and meanings in the work of artists, craftspeople and designers. They learn about the diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design in contemporary life, and in different times and cultures. Understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts have the power to enrich their personal and public lives. In Term 1, Self-image Year7 in this unit, pupils explore their personal identity as a starting point. They create images that reflect their ideas of themselves, working from observation, memory and imagination. They develop skills using traditional materials and processes and have the opportunity to combine traditional and digital media. They learn about the ideas, methods and approaches used by other artists who have made images of themselves and/or portrayed others. They will learn how to use the Diamond Grid drawing method to make precise a detailed drawing. All projects will be underpinned by an informal introduction to the Elements and Principles of Art. Theory of will be introduced and explored through experimentation with different media. In Term 2, What s in a building? Year 7 In this unit, pupils explore their ideas and feelings about buildings and their experiences of walking through spaces. They record interesting features, such as doorways, arches, windows, porches and courtyards. They evolve designs for sculpture based on their studies and produce a sculpture of a building in clay or paper. They look at the work of architects, designers and sculptors. They will learn about Ancient Egyptian art and Byzantine Mosaics and the many different ways various artists through history. In Term 3, Recreating landscapes Year 7 in this unit, pupils explore landscape as the starting point for two- and three-dimensional work. They collect visual and other information by visiting a landscape and by studying the methods, approaches and intentions of artists and craftspeople who use the environment as inspiration. They manipulate the visual and tactile qualities of materials to convey mood and feeling about a landscape and construct textile-based work.
2 Assessment for Year 7: Behaviour in class and participation in the lessons: 20 Equipment and materials: 20 Sketchpad Portfolio: 20 End of Term Practical Project: 20 End of Term written exam: 20 Total: 100 Studio Rules / Teacher s expectations / Discipline policy: When you hear the bell at the start of the day or at break time, line up immediately. Students should line up quietly outside the Art studio, enter quietly, leave their bags neatly against the wall, get their Art Boxes and stand quietly behind their chairs to greet the teacher. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the work you missed from a classmate upon your return. Equipment and materials are a vital part of your internal mark and failing to bring required equipment, which will always be prescribed in advance to the lesson will result in a 0/20 in that section of the continuous assessment criteria. If you miss a deadline or area within a specific discipline, you will receive a 0/20 unless you can provide a medical note to show you were not able to attend. You are to use washrooms before school and during scheduled breaks, not during lessons. Be sure to buy food in the cafeteria before the last minutes of your break; you may not bring any food and/or drink into the studio. Lateness and unauthorized absence will be punished following the discipline policy.
