1 KEY STAGE 2 ~ YEAR 6 Autumn Term HOLES Based upon the novel Holes, this unit aims to explore a novel in real depth, providing children with the opportunity to look at and emulate authorial technique in the areas of plot, characterisation, setting and building suspense and tension (narrative writing) and include descriptive/informative and persuasive elements of non-fiction writing in relation to the science and geographical aspects of the topic. Highlights of the topic include a wow introduction with a focus on curses and the discovery of buried treasure, study of surviving deserts using the experiences and advice of Bear Grylls and creating an engaging data file for the mythical Yellow Spotted Lizard using ICT. Due to the nature of the themes in the novel (crime and punishment), this unit will conclude with an explosive Whodunnit-style activity with the entire year group which involves the children investigating, writing and performing defence and prosecution arguments using the evidence that they have collected.
