1 KEY STAGE 2 ~ YEAR 6 Autumn Term HOLES Based upon the novel Holes, this unit aims to explore a novel in real depth, providing children with the opportunity to look at and emulate authorial technique in the areas of plot, characterisation, setting and building suspense and tension (narrative writing) and include descriptive/informative and persuasive elements of non-fiction writing in relation to the science and geographical aspects of the topic. Highlights of the topic include a wow introduction with a focus on curses and the discovery of buried treasure, study of surviving deserts using the experiences and advice of Bear Grylls and creating an engaging data file for the mythical Yellow Spotted Lizard using ICT. Due to the nature of the themes in the novel (crime and punishment), this unit will conclude with an explosive Whodunnit-style activity with the entire year group which involves the children investigating, writing and performing defence and prosecution arguments using the evidence that they have collected. 2 Maths English KS2 National Curriculum Examples of Activities KS2 English National Curriculum Program of Study Descriptions of settings and characters using show not tell techniques to allow readers to infer aspects through detailed clues. Information texts (advice guides) about desert survival and caring for animals that have adapted to a particular environment, using examples from research in the science aspects of the unit. Persuasive letter to a character from the book, using events from the text. Narrative of a significant event based on a mysterious object, creating tension and appropriate atmosphere Maths will be taught discreetly. KS2 Maths National Curriculum Program of Study Within the curriculum, we use the mastery approach to teaching Mathematics. This involves building children s confidence and promoting depth of understanding by using concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract depictions (CPA approach). Our aim is for children to reach their full potential in building skills in fluency, reasoning and problem-solving.

3 Science About the main events in the life of Charles Darwin About the contribution he made to scientific knowledge about evolution To understand the term evolution To explore the reasons that some people do not believe that evolution happened and look at some creation stories from different religions, e.g. the Vikings About adaptation and Survival of the fittest About the ways in which animals and plants are adapted to their environment To describe ways in which animals are adapted to avoid predation, for example camouflage, use of warning colours in insects, spines on plants To explain how fossils provide evidence for evolution To explain how humans have evolved To compare evolution and selective breeding Research and recount the life of Darwin in a biography using Horrible Histories and internet searches Watch video clips and read information texts to understand the theory of evolution Simulate evolution and selective breeding through an experiment / drama Investigate different creation stories from various religions and share ideas about similarities and differences and how these relate to the theory of evolution Study how animals and plants adapt to their environments and create an imaginary creature to suit a particular habitat Examine fossils and research using Natural History Museum website

To use search techniques effectively; to evaluate and validate online digital content To use Google Earth to explore the geography of the world To use various tools on Microsoft Word to create a data-file I can check the reliability of a website. When designing and making, pupils will be taught to: Design design purposeful, functional, appealing products for themselves and other users based on design criteria generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through talking and drawing. 6 PSHE RE Pupils will be taught about: Faith & commitment Being changed The impact of violence Injustice The strand takes two remarkable stories of faith & explores them to raise issues of morality, supremacy, justice and faith. Case studies of Terry Waite, John Bunyon, Martin Luther King and Ghandi and how they have suffered injustices and overcome them To recognise how their behaviour affects other people. That there are different types of teasing and bullying, that bullying is wrong, and how to get help to deal with bullying. We will be welcoming pupils and teachers from Arden Academy to help us to understand and promote antihomophobia

7 Geography To locate the world s major deserts (to include locating major countries and cities in Africa, Asia and Australasia / Oceania) using maps, atlases, globes and Google Earth To identify key environmental regions and key physical and human characteristics To compare a region in the UK with a region in North America with significant differences and similarities Use geographical resources including Google Earth to explore locations in the world and label significant areas including major deserts Watch an animation to show why the desert biomes are located in particular areas of the world and why this explains the climate and physical features / draw diagrams to illustrate this information Study clips featuring Bear Grylls to identify how to survive in a desert environment and the dangers that exist there Compare regions in the world and discuss why there are similarities and differences. Study the climate of different regions and produce climate graphs to present and analyse the data
