In particular, Cre directs yur attentin tward hw t talk abut and make meaning frm what yu want t learn and knw as a student in cllege. We will explre multiple literacies that extend beynd traditinal reading and writing, such as the literacy f sunds, visual images, spatial relatins and gesture r mvement. Examining ideas frm yur cursewrk thrugh the lens f ethical engagement while expressing thse ideas using multiple literacies and frms helps yu talk abut and make sense f the cntent yu are learning. Keeping ur fcus in mind, yu can think abut many ther ways t cmmunicate and prcess what yu knw and care abut: a pdcast, a vide, a map, a recipe, a eulgy, a dance, a cmic strip panel. 5 SPRING 2018 ASHBY COURSE OFFERINGS Spring 2018 Cre Theme: Film and Culture RCO Cre Christine Fld TR 9:30-10:45 Hllywd and Histry (GHP, GMO, SI) The tragic elements f many eras in American Histry make it almst irresistible fr script writers and prducers t recreate the era in big-budget films, and ften films that take huge histrical leaps ver the real stry. Of curse, n ne expects mvie makers t be histrians, nr is that their jb technically their jb is t make gd films. Yet in reality, the visual images f mvies last far lnger than any lecture; the characterizatins and pltlines f films persist even ver the prtests f frustrated histrians. Mvies, in reality, represent histry fr many f us. As part f ur Ashby fcus n cntemprary media literacy, this curse will help yu sift ut fact and fictin in Hllywd prductins. In this sectin f Cre, we will analyze issues f pwer, ppressin and the relatinship f the individual t the larger sciety in American Histry, as depicted in ppular films, including Birth f a Natin, Gne with the Wind, Grapes f Wrath, Casablanca, Pearl Harbr, A Lng Walk Hme, and 13 Days. It s imprtant t nte that this is nt a class in film technique r prductin, nr in film classics. In fact, a cuple f these mvies are nt even gd. Regardless, each film uses a particular histrical lens t tell an imprtant histrical stry. RCO Cre Will Ddsn TR 9:30-10:45 Shakespeare/Kursawa: The Bard in Japan (GFA, GN) William Shakespeare, the Bard f Avn, is generally cnsidered the greatest pet in any language ever t have lived. His influence is s vast that each year, hundreds f perfrmances f his plays are prduced arund the wrld. Shakespeare is particularly ppular in Japan, where he has impacted classics f mdern Japanese literature, cinema, and visual art. The Japanese filmmaker Akira Kursawa has been called by Steven Spielberg the pictrial Shakespeare f ur time. Kursawa is ne f the mst celebrated filmmakers in histry, and has influenced American films frm Star Wars t The Magnificent Seven. Kursawa adapted three Shakespeare plays int films. First, he mved Macbeth t feudal Japan in Thrne f Bld (1957). He used Hamlet t explre pst-wrld War II Japan in The Bad Sleep Well (1960). Finally, he adapted King Lear as a jidaigeki (perid epic) with Ran (1985). In this curse, we will read the riginal Shakespeare plays and view the films. Yu will learn abut the plays in their riginal cntexts and in the Japanese critical cnditin, hw the plays were translated and transpsed t Japanese cultural cntexts. Students will learn algebraic expressins, expnents, radicals, factring, slving equatins and inequalities, graphing, plynmial and ratinal functins. In this curse, students will explre the lng histry f anti-semitism and persecutin within the cntext f the Hlcaust. Attentin will be given t the rigins, pre-cnditins, and implementatin f the Hlcaust. This curse will challenge dminant cultural assumptins abut the Hlcaust and will investigate the cmplex relatinship between victimhd, cllabratin, and perpetratin. Students will cnfrnt difficult questins: Can a victim becme a perpetratr r vice-versa? Why did rdinary peple participate in the persecutin and murder f their neighbrs? Readings and lectures will examine varius tpics, such as differences between the Hlcaust in the East and West, the diverse range f victims, gender, resistance, memrializatin, and cllective memry. Finally, students will explre glbal respnses t the Hlcaust. What rle did the United States play during the Hlcaust and hw d we remember it tday? These issues will attend t brader questins regarding displaced persns, refugees, gencide, and human rights. RCO All RC Curse Anne Bartn MWF 10:00-10:50 The City: Finding Yurself a City t Live In (GSB, GL) What is a city? Why are cities imprtant t us? Hw d we lcate urselves within cities? Hw d I take my place in the city? Fr millennia, humans have been gathering themselves int settlements f varius sizes such as villages, twns, and cities. Of all these frms f habitatin, it is the city that plays an versized rle in ur cllective imaginatin. It is bth the glrius city n a hill, which speaks t the endless pssibilities f prsperity and leisure, and the dark, decayed inner city which mdern pliticians call int being. In this curse, we will endeavr t discver whether there is any truth in either f these characterizatins as well as many thers that we will encunter alng the way. T begin t answer ur questins f what a city is and what it means fr us as students and as citizens, we will study mapmaking, representatinal and metaphrical, physical and virtual. We will then prceed t study cities thrugh a variety f lenses including thse f the urban gegrapher, the urban scilgist, and the urban planner. And finally, equipped with the knwledge we have gained, we will find urselves a city t live in by cnsidering case studies f specific cities and what thse cities might have t ffer us as prspective inhabitants. RCO All RC Curse Jaclyn Gitlis/Laura Pipe TR 3:30-4:45 Race Relatins and Racial Inequity (GSB) This curse will serve as an intrductin t race relatins and racial inequalities in America. We will be discussing a brad versin f American Histry as a fundatin fr institutinalized and systematic racism, alng with current events that are related t racial tensins. As a class, we will watch excerpts frm crrespnding dcumentaries, read frm selected texts, and prvide respnses in bth written and ral frmats. Our classrm envirnment will als invite discussin f persnal experiences regarding race. 8 MST All RC Curse Will Ddsn M 6:30-9:15 Gerge Rmer and the Philsphy f the Living Dead (SI) Prerequisite: MST 225 Film Appreciatin Gerge A. Rmer is perhaps the mst influential figure in ppular culture tday. With his 1968 film Night f the Living Dead, he created the zmbie film genre as we knw it, and the $2.5 billin dllar zmbie-themed vide game market that fllwed in its wake. Rmer passed away in 2017, and left a challenging bdy f wrk. In additin t the five zmbie films fr which he is best knwn, Rmer made experimental genre films, campy Stephen King adaptatins, and intellectual nn-zmbie hrrr films and televisin. This curse will trace his career in film and televisin, vide games and cmics, frm beginning t end. We will fcus n his status as an independent filmmaker, and his cmmitment t seeing his visins thrugh. We will cnsider hw Rmer used the hrrr genre t make scial statements and analyze his films individually and as a full bdy t make cnclusins abut him as a majr film artist. RCO All RC Curse Ben Petersn TR 11:00-12:15 Reacting t the Past: Threshld f Demcracy (GPR, SI) What principles are mst imprtant t a demcracy? Hw des a demcracy deal with challenges t its institutins? Hw des a demcracy make decisins abut welfare, defense, r war? This curse deals with majr questins f demcratic plitical gvernance thrugh the lens f a histrical rle-playing game fcused n demcratic Athens in 403 BCE. These questins are as relevant tday as they were in the histrical cntext f the game that we will be playing, and yu will be asked t make thse cnnectins as well. Ancient Athenian demcracy prvides an unfamiliar mirrr f ur wn experiences, and we will cllectively make sense f hw it helps us t understand ur cntemprary mment better.
