2 Note to Parents: Your kids are smart, talented, creative, curious, and eager to try everything. Let them explore new ideas, develop new abilities, design, and make things at Discovery World. Whether you have a budding genius in 5 th grade, a bored child who wants to experiment with engineering, or a kid looking to have some fun, Discovery World Summer Camp is for them. Each camp has a unique and exciting theme. Come for one camp, or spend the whole summer with us! Not sure which camp to pick? Give us a call and we ll work with you to place your child in the right camp. Give your kids a valuable summer of exploration and discovery. Send them to summer camp at Discovery World! Camps may not be held without payment. Grade requirement: Participants must be entering the grade required in the school year. Thank you for understanding. 2

3 Extended Care We offer extended, supervised care on a pre-registration basis. All camps begin daily at 9:30am and end at 4:30pm. Extended Care Morning Session: 8:00am 9:15am Extended Care Afternoon Session: 4:45pm 5:30pm The cost per camper is $5.00 per session; per day and pre-registration is required. Parents/guardians must escort their Camper to-and-from the Camp registration area and physically check their Camper in/out each day. Curbside drop-off is not available for Extended Care sessions. Campers being picked up after 5:30pm will be charged an additional $5.00 for every 5 minutes. Any camper dropped off at Discovery World before 9:15am or departing after 4:45pm will need to be registered for extended care. For tax information: The federal ID is Refunds and Rescheduling All cancellations or reschedule requests must be made with the Reservations Department by phone or at least 3 weeks in advance of the camp start date. Please contact or reservations@discoveryworld.org. Please note that camps are sold as a package and no prorated refund can be given for days that your camper does not attend. Rescheduling Rescheduling requests made at least 3 weeks in advance of the camp start will be granted, minus a $25 processing fee. Rescheduling requests made within 3 weeks of the camp start will NOT be granted. All rescheduling requests are subject to availability. Cancellations Cancellations made at least 3 weeks in advance of the camp start date will receive a refund, minus a $75 cancellation fee. Cancellations made within 3 weeks of the camp start date will NOT receive a refund. Discovery World reserves the right to cancel a camp if it does not meet the minimum attendance threshold. In the event that fewer campers register than is required for a camp to take place, Discovery World will notify parents/guardians at least two weeks before the camp start date. In this case, your child can attend an alternate camp at no additional fee or receive a full refund. 4 Learn-to-Sail Camp! Week 3 June Week 7 July Week 9 August 6-10 NOTE: Age is firmly restricted to 8-11 year olds. $ 375 per week members & non-members Discovery World and the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center (MCSC) are partnering to explore the world of sailing, learn water safety, sail rigging and theory, basic maneuvers, and more. Campers will spend half the day sailing the waters of Lake Michigan and the other half exploring the science behind this pastime. 4 NOTE: Ability to swim is required. Each child must submit a Swim Check Form to be completed by a certified lifeguard.

5 1 st Grade Summer Camp Discovery World offers programming specifically designed for Early Childhood learners. These camps take into consideration the developmental stages and active nature of our youngest campers. Our educators will lead 1 st graders in science activities, exploration, and investigation! Week 1: June Chemistry Conduct science experiments designed for young and curious minds. Create color-changing reactions, experiment with slime, and learn about the chemical reactions seen every day in this explosive camp! Week 2: June Build Design a new city on a hill, underwater, or even on a different planet. Build a model with streets, buildings, bridges, and more in this constructive camp! Week 6: July Space Learn how rockets fly, create lunar landscapes, and find out about the tools needed for a mission to space. Blast off for fun in this out-of-this-world camp! Week 7: July Flight Birds, planes, and hot air balloons. Explore things that fly and soar to new heights in this uplifting exploration camp! Week 8: July 30-August 3 Animals Discover the creatures that live both at home and in all corners of the world! Find out the tricks that allow animals to hibernate, identify animal paw prints, create camouflage, and more in this wild camp! Week 10: August Art and Science Some of the most beautiful art is made by Nature. Create amazing patterns, shapes, and designs inspired by science in this colorful camp! *Please visit our website to view the most up-to-date camp offerings. 5

6 2 nd - 3 rd Grade Summer Camp Our early elementary camps appeal to the curiosity and boundless energy of young innovators and scientists. With more exploration time and a slower pace than our older camps, campers have more opportunities to investigate and brainstorm. Week 1: June Sweet Science Explore the tasty side of science. Find out how important science is to candy making, learn how to craft incredible edible experiments, and make some sweet samples to share. Allergy Note: Campers will use foods that may contain milk, egg, soy, sesame, and wheat. Campers may come into contact with items that have been handled in a facility that processes nuts. Please alert the Discovery World camp staff to any allergies at the time of registration. Bug Zone Creeping, crawling, flying, fantastic! Discover the small and important world of insects as you learn how to trap, examine, and identify creatures found right in your own neighborhood. Get up close with exotic bugs during a visit from Tony s Creepy Crawly Zoo! Week 2: June Jr. Robot Builder Become a robot master. Work with a partner and learn how to program and use different types of robots throughout the week, including LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 and Sphero SPRK+. Discover the difference between robot types, and try modifying one of our robots to complete a challenge. Fish, Fish, Fish Become an ichthyologist! Cast off and fish with the staff from the WI DNR Lakeshore State Park. Pet the fish in the Reiman Aquarium, look at invasive species, and make your own fish art to take home. You ll want to live underwater after this camp experience! Week 3: June Detective Academy Discover how real detectives unravel crimes by solving a mysterious case at Discovery World. Examine fingerprints, scrutinize evidence left behind, and decipher the crime scene. Meet with a real detective as you learn how criminologists solve crimes. 6 Jr. Printmaker Roll up your sleeves and get creative! Craft block prints, explore screen printing, use natural artifacts to create unique shapes and textures, learn about the principles of art and design, and even print using the sun in this introduction to printmaking. Splish Splash It s wet! It s fun! It s full of life! Build a watershed, learn how a river shapes the land, explore some of the incredible creatures that live in ponds, and discover some of the amazing things that water can do. Week 4: July 2 & July 3 Single-Day Camps! SPECIAL PRICING APPLIES Carbonation Chemist Experiment with extracts to create the perfect flavor for a homemade fizzy drink. Become a carbonation chemist as you introduce bubbles to different foods to make fantastic treats that fizzle and pop! Rockin Roller Coasters Ever wondered how a roller coaster works? Explore the history of these thrill machines and learn about the physics behind the fun as you design and build a custom track. Discover what it takes to make the loop-de-loops, twists and turns of a successful roller coaster. Week 5: July 9-13 ICKY-ology Explore the science of all things gross - from dissections to the chemistry of snot. In this astonishing camp, you will investigate scientific topics guaranteed to make your stomach churn and your skin crawl. Backyard Animals Learn all about the animals that share our neighborhood, from foxes and turkeys to bees and butterflies. Campers will learn how to observe and photograph wildlife safely, track animals, go fishing, meet the aquarium s reptiles, and spend lots of time outside.

7 Week 6: July It s Electric Spark your knowledge of electrical systems. Explore simple circuits and components such as batteries, breadboards, conductors, and insulators. Design and build flashlights, motors, and various other electrical gadgets. Race to Space Learn how astronauts prepare for life in space, how vehicles and space suits are constructed, and what we know about our solar system and beyond. Become a rocket scientist and participate in a challenge to design a wheel for an off-world vehicle. Week 7: July Take Flight Explore the history and science of flight. From Leonardo da Vinci to the Wright brothers to SpaceX, learn about the science behind staying airborne and create working models to test new ideas. Inside You Discover the fabulous things going on inside of you! Make a life-sized anatomy diagram, dissect an eyeball, listen to your heart, and learn about the cells that make up you as you explore the basics of the human body. Week 8: July 30-August 3 Detective Academy Discover how real detectives unravel crimes by solving a mysterious case at Discovery World. Examine fingerprints, analyze evidence left behind, and decipher a crime scene. Meet a real detective as you learn how criminologists solve crimes. Bubble, Pop, Bang! Get ready for an explosion! Explore chemistry through experiments designed for young and curious minds as you create reaction bags, whip up some slime, discover liquids that won t mix, and learn about everyday chemistry. *Please see website to view the most up-to-date camp offerings. Week 9: August 6-10 Monster Makers Come be inspired by beasts real and mythical as you create a monster! Campers will explore various materials to brainstorm their monster costume, construct a habitat, and more for their creatures. Superhero Science Could you ever be as strong as Superman? Heal as quickly as Wolverine? Control things with your mind like Jean Grey? Learn about the science behind super powers, how far our bodies can go, and discover living things with powers we can only dream of. Week 10: August Mad Scientist Spend the week learning how to use lab tools, materials, and chemicals to create your own science demos. Experiment with reactions, explore acids and bases, and create a spectacle with dry ice. Defy the laws of science and showcase your skills in a live science demo at the end of camp. Magic and Illusions Sleight of hand, misdirection, and persuasion. Learn the secrets behind the tricks, meet a professional, and hone your presentation skills by using techniques incorporating science and illusions. Showcase your own magic during a self-directed magic show at the end of the week. Week 11: August Science Smorgasbord Wish you could have tried more camps this year? Experience the best of summer in this exploratory camp that combines activities from Discovery World s most popular camps! 8 4 th - 5 th Grade Summer Camp Our upper elementary school camps appeal to builders, creators, and explorers. From technology to the environment, campers can find a topic to keep their interest, while experiencing one-on-one interactions, hands-on activities, and optimal engagement. Week 1: June LEGO Robot Engineer Do you have what it takes to become a robot engineer? Work with a partner to build and program one of our LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3s to complete a series of challenges. Whether you re currently on a FIRST LEGO League team or have never even seen an EV3 robot before, this camp will take your robot building and programming skills to the next level. Jr. Fashion Designer Have you ever wanted to design, sew, and assemble your own line of clothing? In the Kohl s Design It! Lab, you ll experiment with hand stitching, machine sewing, and professional tools like laser cutters and heat sealers to put together your customized line. This is your runway, and you re going to own it! Jr. Photography Learn to take pictures like a professional! Experiment with camera settings, photography strategies, editing with Adobe Photoshop Elements, and how to mat a photo as you snap photographs in multiple environments. Finish the week with a photo scavenger hunt in Discovery World! Week 2: June Jr. Architecture Prepare yourself to become the next great architect! Campers will create and carry out experiments to test the strength of shapes and forms to learn where they are used in architectural design. Go home with scaled models, designs of spaces, and much more! Design For Your Room Your bedroom is a blank canvas and we ll help you make it your own. Use graphic design, printmaking, and adhesive chemistry to make custom pillows, personalized stickers, and interactive clothing. Let your style shine as you take all these pieces home! Hydro-Powered Machines Explore the science and physics behind hydraulic machines, generators, water squirters, and more. Harness the power of water to give life to your mechanical creations, and discover how water s power has been used for thousands of years. 8 Week 3: June Survival Challenge Could you survive? Test your wit, skills, and creativity as you explore the human body s limits. Design structures to protect you, assemble your own compass, learn to fish, and build a survival pack to take home. If you can think on your feet, be creative, and stay calm, you ll survive the week! Spy Central Uncover the science of spying. Collect evidence, make your own spy gadgets, use escape and evasion techniques, and learn how to make and break secret spy codes to succeed where other spies have failed. Made from SCRATCH Learn how to program with SCRATCH studio an online, easy-to-use programming language. Create a custom animation, interactive story, and games!

9 Lake Monsters Explore first hand some of Lake Michigan s aquatic invasive species and the problems they pose to our freshwater ecosystem. Campers will observe preserved specimens under microscopes and learn about the effect these invaders have on the Great Lakes. Week 5: July 9-13 Inspired By Nature Are you an artist and explorer of nature? Explore a range of media and art techniques, including drawing, printmaking, sculptures, and more! Examine the environment around you to create individual and collaborative art projects using nature as both the inspiration and palette. Campers will learn to model characters, create a storyboard, and brainstorm a plot to bring ideas to life! Every camper will practice their photography and video techniques, and take home a copy of their project. Get Moving! How do you get from point A to point B without walking? Learn how planes, trains, and automobiles have been designed to travel the world. Find inspiration from sailboats, bikes, rocket ships, and motorcycles to help you create. Use the engineering design process to brainstorm, build, and test your vehicles! Spy Central Uncover the science of spying. Collect evidence, make your own spy gadgets, use escape and evasion techniques, and learn how to make and break secret spy codes to succeed where other spies have failed. Week 7: July Techie Tricksters Design and make your own door alarms, paper speakers, and electronic greeting cards using unconventional techniques and materials. Learn how to create circuits without wires, send secret communications to your friends, and paint a picture using light. At the end of the camp, you ll leave with a handful of electronic gadgets that will make your room light up, buzz, and sound an alarm! Spa Chemistry Spend the week in Discovery World s THIRST Lab making sugar scrubs, lotions, bath fizzies, and more as you learn how these products work. Learn how to extract scents, spend a day visiting the Institute of Beauty and Wellness, and explore brand creation while testing and perfecting products. Learn how to be an entrepreneur and sell your product creations to your friends! Week 1: June Bot Battle Engineer Build and pilot radio-controlled vehicles while learning about engineering, mechanics, and robot design. Campers begin by developing a unique game for robots to play, and then work with others to construct and operate a kit-based robot. Compete with and against other robots to complete goals and win the match. Custom Electric Guitar* Personalize your own electric guitar! Create and screen print custom graphics, design images for a pick guard, and even get a tune-up before the week is over. Learn how to assemble, wire, and customize your guitar with help from our printing pros. And YES, the guitar is yours to keep! *Note: Additional $50 FEE required for electric guitar materials. Week 2: June Future Veterinarian Discover what it s like to be a veterinarian as you learn the signs and symptoms of a sick versus healthy animal, conduct exams under a simulated lab experience, and meet live animals throughout the week. Talk to a professional veterinarian as you spend the week learning about animals from the inside out! Video Game Designer Is developing video games the career of your dreams? Learn the process of creating a video game, starting from the ground up. Focus on creating a digital world, add assets to your environment, and end with a playable game you can take home! Week 3: June Filmmaker 101 Rolling! Learn how to create your own video in a collaborative environment with professional gear and video editing software. Create a portable green screen to help you get creative and make your best work. Cover all the angles of filmmaking techniques, take home short video projects, and learn what you need to know to make your next award-winning video! Structural Engineer Become the next great Structural Engineer! Create buildings using all types of materials from paper and cardboard to concrete and brick. Can your bridges span great distances? Can your towers hold up under great force? Put them to the test after you learn from professionals what tools and techniques are necessary to work on any building or structure. Ready, Set, Code!* Want to make your world smarter? Learn the basics of programming while building electronics projects that can learn from the environment via sensors! At the end of the week, you ll use your newfound techy skills to construct a game of your own design, complete with an Arduino microcontroller that you get to keep! *Note: Additional $35 FEE required for Arduino materials. Week 4: July 2 & July 3 Single-Day Camps! SPECIAL PRICING APPLIES Circuit Bending Circuit bending is the art of purposefully shorting out circuits to reveal hidden sounds and capabilities. Dissect an old toy, explore the circuit, and add buttons and switches to access your hacks. Letterpress Create a one-of-a-kind print as you learn how to use moveable type and a press. Experiment with typography, layout, and design as you use this unique and traditional printing method. Week 5: July 9-13 Underwater Robotics* Dive into the world of underwater robots as you build and test your own ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle). Investigate the principles and technologies used in the creation of underwater robotic vehicles and their role in discovery, science, and exploration. End the week by putting your ROV to the test in an underwater environment. You ll be able to take your ROV home with you. *Note: Additional $50 FEE required for robot materials. 11

12 Week 5: July 9-13 continued Ready, Set, Code!* Want to make your world smarter? Learn the basics of programming while building electronics projects that can learn from the environment via sensors! At the end of the week, you ll use your newfound techy skills to construct a game of your own design, complete with an Arduino microcontroller that you get to keep! *Note: Additional $35 FEE required for Arduino materials. Digital Photographer Learn how to capture the perfect image from Discovery World s professional photographers. Explore the basics of cameras and photography as you hit the streets around downtown Milwaukee. Learn how to edit, print, and mat your photos to build a collection. Note: Campers are welcome to bring their own cameras, but it is not required. Week 6: July Video Game Designer Is developing video games the career of your dreams? Learn the process of creating a video game, starting from the ground up. Focus on creating a digital world, add assets to your environment, and end with a playable game you can take home! Investigate the principles and technologies used in the creation of underwater robotic vehicles and their role in discovery, science, and exploration. End the week by putting your ROV to the test in an underwater environment. You ll be able to take your ROV home with you. *Note: Additional $50 FEE required for robot materials. Week 10: August Aquarist in Training Meet Discovery World s team of aquarists to learn about what it takes to maintain the Reiman Aquarium. Get familiar with the processes our professionals perform on a daily basis; from cleaning tanks to feeding fish. Finish the experience by setting up a small aquarium to take home. Digital Photographer Learn how to capture the perfect image from Discovery World s professional photographers. Explore the basics of cameras and photography as you hit the streets around downtown Milwaukee. Learn how to edit, print, and mat your photos to build a collection. Note: Campers are welcome to bring their own cameras, but it is not required. Advanced Video Game Designer Advanced Game Design continues where Video Game Designer left off. Learn how 3D modeling and scanning can be used to create objects and characters and use the same software as the pros to create a complete game level. Take another step toward your dream job as a game designer. Week 11: August Custom Sk8board* Surf the sidewalk this summer! Screen print custom images on a blank deck, laser cut your design into grip tape, customize the trucks, and so much more in this design and build-based camp. This board will be yours to keep and unlike any other! *Note: Additional $50 FEE required for skateboard materials. Edible Art Ever wonder how people create amazing edible dishes that look more like art than food? Learn the tricks to creating these fun treats that almost look too pretty to eat! Explore the science behind the techniques that culinary professionals use and try your hand at creating these fancy desserts and snacks. Allergy Note: Campers will use foods that may contain milk, egg, soy, sesame, and wheat. Campers may come into contact with items that have been handled in a facility that processes nuts. Please alert the Discovery World camp staff to any allergies at the time of registration. Video Game Designer Is developing video games the career of your dreams? Learn the process of creating a video game, starting from the ground up. Focus on creating a digital world, add assets to your environment, and end with a playable game you can take home! 13

14 FAQs Can I register my child for a camp outside of their age range? No. We strictly enforce age requirements. Your child must be the correct age or entering the correct grade level of the camp. Will my child explore the museum during camp? Discovery World campers will be learning about the topic they ve signed up for each week. If there is a connection to the camp topic in the exhibits and/or extra time to explore the museum, campers will then do so. Otherwise, the campers will be focused on learning the topic at hand in their private classroom. What if I need to cancel or change my summer camp reservation? Changes to summer camp reservations can be made up to 3 weeks in advance of the camp start. You can view the Discovery World reservation policy on page 3 of this brochure. Please note changes to your camp reservation may incur a $25 rescheduling fee or a $75 cancellation fee. Is my child permitted to bring a cell phone or other electronic device to camp? We ask that all cell phones and electronic devices be turned off and stored away during camp hours, including lunch and recess times. If a camper is using an electronic device during camp hours, a Summer Camp Staff member will confiscate the device until the end of the day. What if I need to drop off my child late or pick up my child early from camp? We understand that your family has a busy schedule. We ask that you notify the Summer Camp Staff by phone, , or in person of the change in timing. When you drop your child off late, please accompany your child into the building and wait with them until they get checked in. Please Note: We are unable to accommodate any pick-ups between 3:45pm and 4:30pm. If you wish to pick up your child in the afternoon, you must do so by 3:45pm or wait until the check-out procedure begins at 4:30pm. Camp Showcase 3:30 pm Fridays See what your camper has been talking about all week when you head to their lab, studio, or exhibit space to pick them up and see them in action. Family and friends are invited to roam freely between showcase spaces to see what other camps have been up to!
