Gettig started How to use this maual tams elektroik This maual gives step-by-step istructios for safe ad correct assembly of the kit ad fittig ad coectig of the ready-built module, ad operatio. Before you start, we advise you to read the whole maual, particularly the chapter o safety istructios ad the Page 31

4 Eglish Multi-Timer checklist for trouble shootig. You will the kow where to take care ad how to prevet mistakes which take a lot of effort to correct. Keep this maual safely so that you ca solve problems i the future. If you pass the kit or the ready-built module o to aother perso, please pass o the maual with it. Iteded use The Multi-Timer is desiged to be operated accordig to the istructios i this maual i model buildig, especially with model railways. Ay other use is iappropriate ad ivalidates ay guaratees. The Multi-Timer should ot be assembled or mouted by childre uder the age of 14. Readig, uderstadig ad followig the istructios i this maual are madatory for the user.! Cautio: The Multi-Timer cotais itegrated circuits. These are very sesitive to static electricity. Do ot touch compoets without first dischargig yourself. Touchig a radiator or other grouded metal part will discharge you. Checkig the package cotets Please make sure that your package cotais: oe kit, cotaiig the compoets listed i the parts list ad oe PCB or oe ready-built module or oe ready-built module i a housig (complete uit), 4 short circuit coectors (jumper) to set the operatio mode, oe maual. elektroik Page 32 tams

5 Multi-Timer Eglish Required materials For assemblig the kit you eed: a electroic solderig iro (max. 30 Watt) or a regulated solderig iro with a fie tip ad a solderig iro stad, a tip-cleaig spoge, a heat-resistat mat, a small side cutter ad wire stripper, as ecessary a pair of tweezers ad log ose pliers, electroic ti solder (0,5 mm. diameter). I order to coect the module you eed wire. Recommeded diameters: > 0,10 mm² for buttos ad switches (e.g. item o x, x=0..9), > 0,25 mm² for all other coectios (e.g. item o x, x=0..9). For testig the module you eed a electric light bulb with a separate power supply ad a switch. For the coectio to the switchig iputs you eed: for use as a time switch or a pulse delay: four push buttos, e.g. item o x, x=1..5 (or circuits to release a switchig pulse); for use as a radom switch: four switches, e.g. item o (or comparable circuits); for use as a start-brake-stopover switch: oe switch, e.g. item o (or a circuit to switch over the sigal); tams elektroik oe reed kotact (e.g. item o ) or Hall sesor (e.g. item o ) i combiatio with a maget (e.g. item o ) or a photoelectric barrier or similar for iitiatig of brakig; Page 33

Safety istructios Mechaical hazards Cut wires ca have sharp eds ad ca cause serious ijuries. Watch out for sharp edges whe you pick up the PCB. Visibly damaged parts ca cause upredictable dager. Do ot use damaged parts: recycle ad replace them with ew oes. Electrical hazards Touchig powered, live compoets, touchig coductig compoets which are live due to malfuctio, short circuits ad coectig the circuit to aother voltage tha specified, impermissibly high humidity ad codesatio build up ca cause serious ijury due to electrical shock. Take the followig precautios to prevet this dager: Never perform wirig o a powered module. Assemblig ad moutig the kit should oly be doe i closed, clea, dry rooms. Beware of humidity. Oly use low power for this module as described i this maual ad oly use certified trasformers. Coect trasformers ad solderig iros oly i approved mais sockets istalled by a authorised electricia. Observe cable diameter requiremets. After codesatio build up, allow a miimum of 2 hours for dispersio. Use oly origial spare parts if you have to repair the kit or the ready-built module. elektroik Page 34 tams

7 Multi-Timer Eglish Fire risk Touchig flammable material with a hot solderig iro ca cause fire, which ca result i ijury or death through burs or suffocatio. Coect your solderig iro or solderig statio oly whe actually eeded. Always keep the solderig iro away from iflammable materials. Use a suitable solderig iro stad. Never leave a hot solderig iro or statio uatteded. Thermal dager A hot solderig iro or liquid solder accidetally touchig your ski ca cause ski burs. As a precautio: use a heat-resistat mat durig solderig, always put the hot solderig iro i the solderig iro stad, poit the solderig iro tip carefully whe solderig, ad remove liquid solder with a thick wet rag or wet spoge from the solderig tip. Dagerous eviromets A workig area that is too small or cramped is usuitable ad ca cause accidets, fires ad ijury. Prevet this by workig i a clea, dry room with eough freedom of movemet. Other dagers Childre ca cause ay of the accidets metioed above because they are iattetive ad ot resposible eough. Childre uder the age of 14 should ot be allowed to work with this kit or the ready-built module.! Cautio: tams elektroik Little childre ca swallow small compoets with sharp edges, with fatal results! Do ot allow compoets to reach small childre. Page 35

I idustrial istitutios, health ad safety regulatios applyig to electroic work must be adhered to. 3. Safe ad correct solderig! Cautio: Icorrect solderig ca cause dagers through fires ad heat. Avoid these dagers by readig ad followig the directios give i the chapter Safety istructios. Use a small solderig iro with max. 30 Watt or a regulated solderig iro. Oly use electroic ti solder with flux. Whe solderig electroic circuits ever use solderig-water or solderig grease. They cotai acids that ca corrode compoets ad copper tracks. Isert the compoet coectig pis of ito the PCB s holes as far as possible without force. The compoets should be close to the PCB s surface. Observe correct polarity orietatio of the parts before solderig. Solder quickly: holdig the iro o the joits loger tha ecessary ca destroy compoets ad ca damage copper tracks or solderig eyes. Apply the solderig tip to the solderig spot i such a way that the part ad the solderig eye are heated at the same time. Simultaeously add solder (ot too much). As soo as the solder becomes liquid take it away. Hold the solderig tip at the spot for a few secods so that the solder flows ito the joit, the remove the solderig iro. elektroik Page 36 tams

9 Multi-Timer Eglish Do ot move the compoet for about 5 secods after solderig. To make a good solderig joit you must use a clea ad uoxidised solderig tip. Clea the solderig tip with a damp piece of cloth, a damp spoge or a piece of silico cloth. Cut the wires after solderig directly above the solderig joit with a side cutter. After placig the parts, please double check for correct polarity. Check the PCB tracks for solder bridges ad short circuits created by accidet. This would cause faulty operatio or, i the worst case, damage. You ca remove excess solder by puttig a clea solderig tip o the spot. The solder will become liquid agai ad flow from the solderig spot to the solderig tip. tams elektroik Page 37

10 Eglish Multi-Timer 4. Operatio overview The Multi-Timer has 4 outputs to cotrol dowstream circuits. I order to release the switchig operatios, the cotacts of the 4 related switchig iputs have to be closed. The switchig duratio ca be set via trim-pots idividually for the differet switchig operatios. There are four differet modes of operatio available: whe used i aalogue or digital layouts: 1. time switch, 2. pulse delay, 3. radom switch; whe used i aalogue layouts: 4. start-brake-stopover switch. The mode of operatio has to be set by meas of jumpers. The operatio modes 1 ad 2 are set to the 4 outputs of the Multi-Timer idividually. Thus usig oe Multi-Timer as a combied time switch ad pulse delay is possible. Whe usig oe Multi-Timer as a ramdom switch or a start-brake-stopover switch, the settig is effective for the whole module. The Multi-Timer works like a switch ad does ot provide curret for the operatio of dowstream circuits at it s outputs. Therefore the dowstream circuits have to be provided exterally with curret. It is possible to use d.c. as well as a.c. voltage for the power supply. Operatio mode 1 "Time Switch" elektroik The activatig time has to be set idividually at a trim-pot for each output. The maximum activatig time is 4,5 miutes. After the closure of the cotacts of a switchig iput the related output is switched o for the set time. I order to release a switchig pulse push-buttos or comparable exteral circuits ca be used. Page 38 tams

11 Multi-Timer Eglish I this operatio mode the Multi-Timer ca be set either to allow it to be retriggered or ot. To be retriggered: Whe the cotacts of the switchig iput are closed agai (e.g. by activatig the push-butto agai), before the set time has ru out, the time starts to ru from scratch agai. Example: Whe at a set time of 60 secods the cotacts of the switchig iput are closed agai after 30 secods, the overall activatig time is 90 secods. Not to be retriggered: Whe the cotacts of the switchig iput are closed agai, before the set time has ru out, this has o effects. A ew switchig operatio caot be released befort the set activatig time has ru out. Applicatio: You ca apply the operatio mode 1 for all actios you wat to be switched o for a certai time ad to be switched off automatically after the time has ru out. Operatio mode 2 "Pulse Delay" The delay time has to be set idividually at a trim-pot for each output. The maximum activatig time is 4,5 miutes. Each chage i state at oe of the switchig iputs is trasmitted to the related output with the set delay. Oe chage i state is as well a opeig as a closig of the cotacts of the switchig iput. A maximum of 64 chages i state ca be saved withi the set time of delay. I case there are more chages of state withi the time of delay, the chages of state first executed will be deleted. Applicatio: tams elektroik You ca apply the operatio mode 2 for all actios that should be executed with a time delay after a precedig occurace, e.g. opeig the level-crossig after a trai has passed or settig the sigal to stop after a trai has passed. 12 Eglish Multi-Timer The operatio mode 2 ca be used as well to release switchig operatios delayed, i order to prevet switchig cotacts from beig blocked permaetly. Example: The power supply i a rail sectio has to be switched off (ad the trai brought to a stopp), as soo as the trai has passed a reed cotact. I case the trai would stop immediately after passig the reed cotact, it would be impossible to switch o the rail sectio agai. With the Multi-Timer it is possible to delay the switchig pulse so that the trai does ot stop before the reed cotact will ot be released ay more. Operatio mode 3 "Radom Switch" The 4 outputs of the Multi-Timer are switched separately for a time at radom. The time iterval after which the radom geerator decides whether to release a switchig operatio or ot, ca be set for each output idividually via a trimpot, the maximum iterval is 4,5 miutes. The dowstream circuit ca stay switched o or off for several time itervals (maximum 10) Whe coectig switches (or similar circuits) to the switchig iputs of the Multi-Timer, the radom cotrol ca be affected maually. As soo as the cotacts of the switchig iputs are closed (= o), the curret state of the related output will be "froze" ad the radom switch has o more ifluece o the output. The output will be cotrolled by the radom switch oly after the cotacts of the switchig iput are opeed agai (= out). Applicatio: You ca apply the operatio mode 3 for all actios to be switched o ad off at radom. Operatio mode 4 "Start-Brake-Stopover Switch" The Multitimer cotrols the sigal positio (stop or clear) as well as brakig, stoppig ad startig of aalogue locomotives at a sigal stop. Additioally, the Multi-Timer affects the drivig characteristics of a Page 40 tams elektroik

13 Multi-Timer Eglish locomotive i the coected rail sectio. I cojuctio with the PWM it is set to cotrol the locomtoive s movemet withi the rail sectio. The legth of time for brakig, stoppig ad startig ad the supply voltage whe startig has to be set via trim-pots. The maximum time to be set for stoppig is 4,5 miutes, you ca reduce or prolog it via a switch as required. The maximum time for brakig ad startig is 12 secods. The supply voltage whe startig ca be set so that the locomotive i fact starts without delay, but at a low rate. The maximum supply voltage is ot applied before the ed of the startig time. It is possible to set either a low or a high PWM for the coected rail sectio by correspodig settig of the jumpers. The PWM is the rate cotrollig the locomotive s motor. Whether a low or a high PWM is more suitable, depeds o the idividual characteristics of the motor. low PWM: higher motor output, but loud ad possibly disturbed egie ruig; high PWM: lower motor output, but quiet ad smooth egie ruig. Sequece: Via a switch coected to switchig iput 1, the sigal is set to "stop" (switchig iput closed) or to "clear" (switchig iput ope). Semaphore sigals are to be switched directly, light sigals ca be switched via bistable relays as well. It is also possible to do without coectig sigals, the outputs 1 ad 2 stay the ope. The switchig iput 2 is used to release the brakig, as soo as the locomotive passes a cotact at the begiig of the brakig track ad thus the cotacts of the switchig iput are closed. Here a reed cotact or a hall sesor i combiatio with a maget or a photoelectric barrier ca be used. tams elektroik Depedig o the sigal positio (= switchig iput 1 closed or ope), the locomotive will brake ad stop or drive o. The sigal s chage to "clear" is carried out either Page 41

14 Eglish Multi-Timer automatically after the set stop time has elapsed or before the stop time has elapsed by opeig the switchig iput 1. You ca prolog the stop time by closig the cotacts at switchig iput 3. The sigal remais o "stop" as log as the iput 3 is closed, but at least for the set stop time. As soo as the sigal turs to "clear", the locomotive starts with the set startig delay ad startig supply voltage. elektroik Page 42 tams

16 Eglish Multi-Timer 6. Assemblig the kit You ca skip this part if you have purchased a ready-built module or device. Preparatio Put the sorted compoets i frot of you o your workbech. The separate electroic compoets have the followig special features you should take ito accout i assemblig: Resistors Value: Resistors reduce curret. The value of resistors for smaller power ratigs is idicated through colour rigs. Every colour stads for aother figure. Carbo film resistors have 4 colour rigs. The 4th rig (give i brackets here) idicates the tolerace of the resistor (gold = 5 %). Colour rigs: 1 k brow - black - red (gold) 1,5 k brow - gree - red (gold) 10 k brow - black - orage (gold) Trimm-potetiometers Trimm-potetiometers (abrv. "trimm-pots") are resistors which allow the value of resistace to be varied ad that way to be adapted to the particular demads. I the middle they have a small slot ito which a small screwdriver ca be put i order to vary the value of resistace. The maximum value is prited o the housig. Depedig o the moutig situatio trimmpots with a lyig or a stadig package are used. elektroik Page 44 tams

17 Multi-Timer Eglish Ceramic capacitors Amog other thigs ceramic capacitors are used for filterig iterferece voltages or as frequecy determiig parts. Ceramic capacitors are ot polarized. Normally they are marked with a three-digit umber which idicates the value coded. The umber 104 correspods to the value 100 F. Electrolytic capacitors Electrolytic capacitors are ofte used to store eergy. I cotrast to ceramic capacitors they are polarized. The value is give o the package. Electrolytic capacitors are available with differet voltage sustaiig capabilities. Usig a electrolytic capacitor with a voltage sustaiig capability higher tha required is always possible. Diodes ad Zeer diodes Diodes allow the curret to pass through i oe directio oly (forward directio), simultaeously the voltage is reduced by 0,3 to 0,8 V. Exceedig of the limit voltage always will destroy the diode, ad allow curret to flow i the reverse directio. Zeer diodes are used for limitig voltages. I cotrast to "ormal" diodes they are ot destroyed whe the limit voltage is exceeded. The diode type is prited o the package. Rectifiers tams elektroik Rectifiers covert alteratig ito direct voltage. They have four pis: two for the iput voltage (a.c. voltage) ad two for the output voltage (d.c. voltage). The pis for the output voltage are polarized. Page 45

18 Eglish Multi-Timer Trasistors Trasistors are curret amplifiers which covert low sigals ito stroger oes. There are several types i differet package forms available. The type desigatio is prited o the compoet. Trasistors for a high power ratig (e.g. BD types, BT types) have a flat package (TO-package), which is i use i differet versios ad sizes. The three pis of the field effect trasistors (e.g. BS types, FETs, MOSFETs) are called "source", "gate" ad "drai" (abbreviated with the letters S, G, D i the circuit diagram). Itegrated circuits (ICs) Microcotrollers Depedig o the type, ICs fulfil various tasks. The most commo housig form is the so-called "DIL"-housig, from which 4, 6, 8, 14, 16, 18 or more "legs" (pis) are arraged alog the log sides. ICs are sesitive to damage durig solderig (heat, electrostatic chargig). For that reaso i the place of the ICs IC sockets are soldered i, i which the ICs are iserted later. Microcotrollers are ICs, which are idividually programmed for the particular applicatio. The programmed cotrollers are oly available from the maufacturer of the circuit belogig to it. Opto couplers Opto couplers are ICs, which work similar to laser beam switches. They combie i oe housig a light emittig diode ad a photo trasistor. Their task is the trasmittio of iformatio without galvaic coectio. They are i a DIL-housig with at least 4 pis. Page 46 tams elektroik

19 Multi-Timer Eglish Termial strips Termial strips are solder-i screw-type termials. They provide a solder-free ad safe coectio of the cables to the circuit, which ca still be separated ay time. Assembly Proceed accordig to the order give i the list below. First solder the compoets o the solder side of the PCB ad the cut the excess wires with the side cutter. Follow the istructios o solderig i sectio 3.! Cautio: Several compoets have to be mouted accordig to their polarity. Whe solderig these compoets the wrog way roud, they ca be damaged whe you coect the power. I the worst case the whole circuit ca be damaged. At the best, a wrogly coected part will ot fuctio. 1. Resistors Moutig orietatio of o importace. 2. Diodes, Zeer diodes 3. Ceramic Capacitors Observe the polarity! The egative ed of the diodes is marked with a rig. This is show i the PCB layout. Moutig orietatio of o importace. 4. IC sockets Mout the sockets that way, the markig o the sockets shows i the same directio as the markigs o the PCB board. tams elektroik 5. Rectifiers Observe the polarity! The pi coectios are prited o the housig. The loger coectig pi is the positive pole. Page 47

20 Eglish Multi-Timer 6. Trimmpotetiometers 7. Solder pis 8. Electrolytic capacitors The moutig orietatio is preset by the layout of the three pis. Observe the polarity! Oe of the two leads (the shorter oe) is marked with a mius sig. 9. Trasistors Observe the polarity! With trasistors for a high power ratig i TO packages (e.g. MOSFETs) the labelled frot side is marked by a beveled lie i the PCB layout. 10. Double termial strips 11. ICs i DILhousig Put together the termial strips before moutig them. Isert the ICs ito the soldered socket. Do ot touch the ICs without first dischargig yourself by touchig a radiator or other grouded metal parts. Do ot bed the "legs" whe isertig them ito the sockets. Check that the markigs o the PCB, the socket ad the IC show to the same directio. elektroik Page 48 tams

21 Multi-Timer Eglish Performig a visual check Perform a visual check after the assembly of the module ad remove faults if ecessary: Remove all loose parts, wire eds or drops of solder from the PCB. Remove all sharp wire eds. Check that solder cotacts which are close to each other are ot uitetioally coected to each other. Risk of short circuit! Check that all compoets are polarised correctly. Whe you have remedied all faults, go o to the ext part. 7. Coectig the Multi-Timer Fuctioal test Especially, whe you have mouted the Multi-Timer from a kit, you should perform a fuctioal test before moutig it i your layout. Coect a electric bulb with a separate power supply to output 1 ad a push-butto to switchig iput 1 as described below for operatio mode 1. Coect the Multi-Timer to the power supply. Choose operatio mode 1 (r) for testig all outputs, so do ot isert a jumper to ay of the solder pis. Set a short switchig time (trim-pot as far as it will go to the left). The check all four outputs ad switchig iputs oe after the other.! Cautio: Whe a compoet gets hot, discoect the module from the power supply immediately! Risk of short circuit! 22 Eglish Multi-Timer Coectio to the outputs (operatio modes 1, 2 ad 3) The Multi-Timer works like a switch. It does ot provide curret for the operatio of dowstream circuits at it s outputs. That is why these eed a exteral voltage supply (d.c. or a.c.). Whe usig the Multi-Timer with operatio modes 1, 2 or 3 (as time switch, pulse delay or ramdom switch), coect the dowstream circuits to the four outputs accordig to your eeds. Coectio to the switchig iputs (operatio modes 1 ad 2) As soo as the cotacts of the switchig iputs are closed, the switchig operatios will be released at the related outputs. For the operatio modes 1 or 2 you have to coect push-buttos to the switchig iputs. As a alterative you ca mout upstream circuits releasig a short switchig pulse like push-buttos. Coectio to the switchig iputs (operatio mode 3) I order to affect the radom cotrol maually, you have to coect switches (or circuits with a similar mode of operatio) to the switchig iputs. As soo as the cotacts of the switchig iputs are closed, the previously by the radom switch set state will be "froze". Coectio with operatio mode 4 For use as a start-brake-stopover switch you have to isolate the rail sectio to be cotrolled by the Multi-Timer from the remaiig layout. These ca be e.g.: rail sectios with a sigal stop (e.g. block sectios), flag stops. Here cut with 3-rail systems the middle coductor ad with 2-rail systems the same coductor you have cut for other applicatios. elektroik Page 50 tams

Whe usig istead of a soleoid article with double coil drive (e.g. semaphore sigal) a light sigal, you have to mout a additioal bistable relay. Switch, push butto or upstream circuits The locomotive stops as log as the switchig iput is closed, but at least for the set stop time. With the operatio mode 1 "time switch" you ca choose whether you wat to retrigger the outputs or ot. Possible cause: oe or more compoets are soldered icorrectly. à I case you have mouted the module from a kit, perform a visual check (à sectio 6.) ad if ecessary, remedy the faults. Otherwise sed i the module for repair. There is o reactio after releasig a switchig operatio. Possible cause: The push-butto, the switch or the circuit used to close the cotacts of the switchig iput are defective or coected icorrectly. à Check the push-butto, the switch or the circuit ad the coectios. Possible cause: The dowstream circuit is defective or coected icorrectly. à Check the circuit ad the coectios. I this case you should exchage the circuit by a electric bulb for a test ad set operatio mode 1 for the output cocered. With use as a start-brake-stopover switch The locomotive does ot start although the sigal has bee set to "clear" / the stoppig time has elapsed. Possible cause: The PWM is set to "high", but the voltage at the track is ot sufficiet for the locomotive. à Alter the settig to "low PWM". The locomotive s egie ruig loud ad disturbed. Possible cause: The track voltage for startig is set too high. à Reduce the track voltage util the locomotive starts with a low velocity after a stop. The locomotive starts after a stop but with a log delay. Possible cause: The track voltage for startig is set too low. à Icrease the track voltage so that the locomotive starts immediatly with a low velocity after a stop.
