You will explore what color is, how it is made and how it is applied in a variety of arts. Participants will learn about color theory and the intricacies of color perception. This illustrated talk will chronicle the history of noncommissioned art in the public eye from the Renaissance to the present day. Artists, their preferred materials and techniques, issues of ownership and laws governing graffiti will be discussed in depth. This is a class for artists to work from a live model in a studio setting This series consists of drop-in sessions. There is no registration fee: simply pay the monitor on site. $13 per day Pay-What-You-Can Figure Drawing Class 5:30 pm 7:30 pm Sept 17 Dec 12 no class Nov 26 To celebrate 100 years of art eduction at the Newport Art Museum, the Coleman Center offers this pay-what-you-can class every Tuesday. No cancellations, no minimum class size, no registration required. Just drop in and contribute what you can. Draw a live model from observation to hone your drawing skills. You will create an energetic surface pattern in an irregular geometric composition, as well as use invented textures, to enliven such subjects as a mythological animal, an imaginary landscape, and an expressive portrait. Techniques include the use of plant parts as stencils, plants as printing blocks and as ink. Member price: $45 Non-member price: $55 WORKSHOP Gyotaku: Japanese Fish Printing Elizabeth Stearns Offered twice 5:30 pm 7:30 pm Sept 23 5:30 pm 7:30 pm Dec 6 Gyotaku is the traditional method of Japanese fish printing, dating from the mid-1800s. Ink a real fish s scales and create a life-size print on traditional rice paper. Make a simple collagraph from found materials and learn more advanced surface treatments in an atmosphere where experimentation is encouraged and attention is given to individual needs. The technique can be combined with monotype, monoprint or collage. This is a multi-level class. The work of various local and famous artists will be used for illustration and you will draw from observation well as from the imagination. Anyone can search for classes, but to register, you will need a username and password. You can follow the on-screen prompts to do so. If your Newport Art Museum membership is current, we have already created a username and password to get you started. Contact the Membership Office at (401) x 7983 if you do not have this information, or if you need assistance. We strongly recommend that you change your password by going to the class registration pages of our website and following the onscreen prompts. classes will be cancelled one week prior to the start of class; there is a six-person minimum enrollment per class. Student cancellation must be at least 5 business days prior to a class start date for a tuition refund, less a $25 service fee. No refunds will be given for withdrawal within 5 days of class start date. We do not offer refunds for oneday or Visiting Artist Workshops. We do not offer pro-rates to attend part of a course. Inclement Weather Policy Classes postponed because of weather or factors beyond our control will be made up, if possible, at the end of the term. During inclement weather, the Newport Art Museum follows the Newport Public Schools: if Newport Public Schools are closed, the Museum and Coleman Center are closed.
