2 SUMMER 2014 CLASSES White Line Woodcut Workshop with Lisa Houck 10 am 4 pm June 28 VISITING ARTISTS WORKSHOP STUDIO INCAMMINATI Painting the Figure in Color Instructor: Darren Kingsley 9 am 4 pm June 19, 20, 21 Join renowned artist Lisa Houck, instructor at the Fuller Craft Museum and Mass College of Art, for a one-day intensive printmaking workshop. White line woodcut is a technique developed by Blanche Lazell in Provincetown in the 1920s. Inspired by European modernism and American craft techniques, Lazell developed this method from the techniques used in Japanese woodblock printing. Start by carving linear drawings in a pine block and then print multiple color areas using watercolor washes. Results are painterly and textured. All levels are welcome. Member: $185 Non-member: $215 Materials fee: $20 This workshop focuses on fundamental principles essential to achieving a convincing three-dimensional representation of the human figure in oil. These principles will be analyzed in a logical sequence beginning with gesture and continuing through to the study of color and its effect on the figure and its environment. STUDIO INCAMMINATI Painting the Head in Color Instructor: Lea Colie Wight 9 am 4 pm June 23, 24, 25 This workshop focuses on the fundamental principles essential to achieving a convincing three-dimensional portrait in oils. These principles are analyzed in a logical sequence beginning with gesture and continuing through an introduction to the study of color and value. (215) in-your-town-workshops Plein Air Watercolor with David Dewey 9 am 4 pm September 6, 7 Newport Art Museum is excited to welcome back celebrated artist David Dewey for a two-day intensive watercolor workshop. This plein air workshop applies fundamental watercolor methods and characteristics to painting from observation with emphasis on COLOR as an intrinsic part of development. A brief studio presentation will introduce the methods used in the workshop. For over 20 years, David Dewey has been conducting watercolor workshops in Maine, throughout New England, and in Europe. His national reputation, breathtaking watercolor paintings, engaging informative teaching methods and demonstrations have drawn students to his workshops from throughout the United States and Europe. 4 SUMMER 2014 CLASSES DRAWING Life Drawing Saturday Open Studio with Model Bill Heydt 9 am 12 pm May 10 August 23 No class June 21, July 5, or August 16 The artist and the model is one of the oldest and most enduring relationships in art. This is a class for artists to work from a live model in a studio setting. This series consists of drop-in sessions; there is no registration fee simply pay the monitor on site. Join us every Saturday morning. $13 per day Pay-What-You-Can Figure Drawing Class 5:30 pm 7:30 pm May 13 August 26 No class June 24 or July 1 The Coleman Center presents an evening figure drawing studio session to incorporate into your weekly schedule. No cancellations, no minimum class sizes, no registration required just drop in and contribute what you can. Draw a live model from observation to hone your drawing skills. Suggested donation: $8 Drawing for Everyone Diane Conlon July 9 August 13 Learn to draw in a convivial atmosphere. This class is for beginners and those with some drawing experience. You will explore line, shape, and form. You will also learn about composition, values, and space in order to develop the ability to draw what you see. Learn the logic to art and bolster your self-confidence as an artist. Plein Air Sketching Glenn Secrest July 15 August 19 Open to all media all levels. This course is designed to hone your skills in quickly capturing the essence of plein air scenes. Compose and create quick studies in the field, which focus on composition, shapes, values, edges and (lastly) color. Member: $145 Non-member: $170 Colored Pencil Drawing Kendra Ferreira May 12 June 16 No class May 26 Discover the many ways of creating vibrant colored pencil drawings. Learn layering, blending, and burnishing. Try your new skills on different toned surfaces. For all levels; appropriate for beginners. Whether you are accomplished cutter or someone new to this medium, endless possibilities and inspiration awaits you. We will explore various paper traditions from around the globe. With simple tools the limits of paper cutting will be tested. Member: $175 Non-member: $210 Materials fee: $8 Gyotaku: Fish Printing Dabba (Elizabeth) Stearns July 15 Gyotaku is the traditional method of Japanese fish printing, dating from the mid- 1800s. Ink a real fish s scales and create a life-size print on traditional rice paper. Member: $32 Non-member: $40 Materials fee: $8 NEW! Paper Making Grace Davis 10 am 2 pm June 7 June 21 Abaca is a non-flowering banana plant and when broken down into its basic fibers, the leaves can be used to create sheets of paper. During this class you will engage in the paper-making process by utilizing concentrated abaca sheets to make a paper vat. Dream Drawing with Plants Noelle King August 5 August 14 You will use the natural environment for art-making tools. Using dreams or dream imagery, participants will use the various plants in specific ways to create dream drawings. A portfolio of unique drawings based on dreams is the end result. Digital Portfolio Preparation Rachel Villari May 24 This intensive workshop focuses on preparing student work for submission to college applications, juried shows, and requests for grant proposals. Experience a Variety of Media Trish Hurley August 7 August 28 Have you ever wanted to try your hand at working in a different medium, but didn t know where to start? This is the class for you! The class begins with a discussion of art history and the artists who have tried each medium. Starting with pencil sketches to represent form in space, work in charcoal to express value, explore printmaking to create a monoprint, and finally experiment with color and the medium of oil painting. You will learn the tools and principles of representational painting from simple still life subjects, with an introduction to using color, then transition to simple outdoor settings for a landscape painting introduction. Member: $225 Non-member: $260 Plein Air Oil Painting Mini-Class: Landscape Oil Painting Peter Dickison 9:30 am 1 pm July 11 July 25 An introduction to outdoor oil painting, this class is a follow-up to Intro to Oils (above) or as a plein air class to brush up on your landscape painting skills. You will be painting outdoors using fundamental approaches to color, focusing your ability to paint nature in the wonderful medium of oil. Member: $95 Non-member: $120 Fundamentals of Acrylic Painting Jeannine Bestoso July 24 August 21 Learn to express yourself using bold vibrant colors and just have fun learning the basic techniques of this new-to-you medium. You will meet in Battery Park, Green Bridge, Watson Farm, Glen Farm, Coggeshall Farm, and Mount Hope Farm. 7 Capture the colors of a RI summer, while pushing your painting technique to the next level. Member: $165 Non-member: $200 Portrait with a Hat Peter Dickison May 12 August 11 No class May 26 or June 30 In the early days of the Art Association of Newport, one of our models wore a Turkish turban. We continue that tradition today. Develop your portraiture skills by working with models dressed in different headwear and costumes. Experienced artists are encouraged to bring their media of choice. Member: $300 Non-member: $360 Model fee: $45 Landscape Painting with David Barnes David Barnes 9 am 12 pm July 7 August 11 Get painting outdoors in this plein air landscape painting class. Visit a new location each class, on or near Aquidneck Island, and paint in the tradition of Constable, Corot, and Monet. There will be demonstrations and individual and group critiques. This is primarily an oil or acrylic class, but students who want to use watercolor or pastel will be accepted. Member: $165 Non-member: $200 Portraiture (Painting and Drawing) with David Barnes David Barnes 9 am 12 pm June 2 June 30 No class June 23 This class will explore traditional and contemporary approaches to portraiture. The class is open to all skill levels and materials. Each class will begin with a brief demonstration by the instructor followed by a series of short poses and then one longer pose. Member: $125 Non-member: $140 Model fee: $45 Painting Around Fort Adams Diane Conlon June 4 June 25 Painting outdoors by the Bay is an opportunity to work with extreme lights, darks and a multitude of hues. Visit this location for four weeks and learn to paint what you see in this inspiring local landmark. Member: $115 Non-member: $140 Plein Air Pastels Jeanne Tangney May 28 June 25 No class June 18 Learn various ways to approach plein air painting using pastels. Discuss equipment and materials. Explore under-painting techniques, layering, mark-making, composition, value relationships and color selection. Learn to simplify the landscape to make a stronger painting. Member: $115 Non-member: $140 Figure in the Landscape David Barnes 9 am 12 pm July 9 August 13 Each morning we will pose the figure in a different setting (beach, park or garden). Students will face the creative challenge of integrating the figure into a natural landscape. Open to all painting media or pastel. Some previous experience is recommended. 9 BE READY FOR WET PAINT 2014 PRINTMAKING Printmaking Studio Margot Rubin 9:30 am 1:30 pm May 13 June 17 You will make monotypes and monoprints, woodcuts and linocuts, solar plates, collagraphs, copper plates etched with ferric chloride, and paper lithographs. Many of these techniques can be combined in a single image. We use oil-based and Akua Inks. Experimentation is encouraged and attention is given to each person s needs. This is a multilevel class. Member: $220 Non-member: $265 Materials fee: $25 Collagraph Printmaking Grace Bentley-Scheck 1 pm 4 pm May 14 June 18 Collagraphs are prints made from collaged plates using simple non-toxic materials. Make a simple collagraph from found materials and learn about more advanced surface treatments in an atmosphere where experimentation is encouraged and attention is given to individual needs. The technique can be combined with monotype, monoprint or collage. This is a multi-level class. In this three-day workshop we will explore the ancient Japanese firing technique of Raku. The workshop is for students with some clay experience; you can build, glaze, and then Raku fire a piece. Exploring Poetry Through Art Emily Manice 3 pm 5 pm July 21 July 25 Identify poetic elements in selected poems and weave these devices into their writing. Art in the museum and the world will serve as inspiration for students poems in order to develop strong imagery with sensory language and specific details. There are millions of planets out there and maybe one has life! What would your planet look like? Explore through art a way to imagine what the world out in space may look like. Use clay and collage to create a galaxy of your own and beyond! Digital Artists (8 12 years) Learn to use digital cameras, scanners and editing software to create digital works of art. Take walking field trips around Newport neighborhoods to find inspiration for your images and then creatively manipulate them in our imac Digital Studio. Play with Mâché: Papier Mâché Camp (11-14 years) Jodi Manca 10 am 2 pm This camp will explore the versatile medium of paper. You will construct sculptures beginning with wire, cardboard, and wood as a base. Then you ll cover them with paper and watch them transform into amazing creations. 11 SUMMER CAMPS JULY 7 11 CAMPS Monster Mash (6 9 years) Sherry Italiano 9 am 2 pm Come to the Monster mash extravaganza for a multi-media experience. In this camp you will create a monster mug from clay, then add an array of scary sculptures from much more. Explore and manipulate materials and have a monster of a week. Member: $235 Non-member: $285 Myths, Monsters & Magicians (8 12 years) Lisa May Tobin Explore the stories of the Greeks, Vikings, and King Arthur s court. Get inspired by these legends to create masks of Zeus or Aphrodite, make a Viking ship, maybe even design for the scary characters, like Medusa! Create your own magic that even Merlin would admire! Tween Photographers (11 14 years) Create a portfolio filled with a week s worth of photographs that explore a variety of subjects and themes. Learn strategies for photographing nature, architecture, people, motion, interiors and more. Then use our imac digital studio to edit your final images. JULY CAMPS Arrr Matey, It s A Pirates Camp for You (6 9 years) Lisa May Tobin Calling all would-be Pirates, let s ship ahoy to the South Seas! Use your treasure maps to fill your handmade treasure boxes full of jewels and doubloons. Make Pirate outfits and a ship. There is so much to explore about Pirates, you will need a week at camp to do it all. Young Illustrators (8 12 years) Jodi Manca 10 am 2 pm Create a book of your very own. Camp will include writing a story and then illustrating the tale. Many different manners of illustration will be explored including digital illustration. You will even bind the book at the end of the week to complete your camp session. Learn how all of these elements work together to create a finished artful image. Be inspired by what you learn. Create masks, sculpture, fantastic costumes and colorful works of art to display and brighten your home. Every (Digital) Picture Tells a Story (8 12 years) A picture s worth a thousand words! Photograph the people, buildings, artworks and summer scenes that make Newport such an exciting place. Then take your photos back to the imac digital studio and edit your images. What story will you tell with your camera? NEW! Pattern, Print & Color on Fabric Fiber Art Camp (11 14 years) Patti Bigrig In this camp you will explore the art of surface design on textiles and create fabric using the ancient Japanese process of Shibori a shaped-resist dying process. Create and come to appreciate textiles, from the clothes you wear to the sheets you sleep on. Materials fee: $8 Explorers grab your cameras and get ready to trek through historic Newport. You will go on a photo safari through the old streets to the waterfront. Create special projects documenting your adventures while you discover how to use a camera to creatively look at the world around you. Draw & Explore (8 12 years) Peter Dickison Learn a series of five drawing skills, presented one per day. We ll explore the Newport Art Museum neighborhood to search for observational drawing opportunities for each drawing tool. Use various graphic media, including graphite, charcoal, chalk, collage and ink wash. 13 SUMMER CAMPS AUGUST 4 8 CAMPS Tea in the Garden (6 9 years) Sherry Italiano 9 am 2 pm Using local summer gardens in bloom for inspiration, you will create a ceramic tea set in our well-equipped ceramic studio. Join in that excitement by coming up with so many ways to imagine these unique machines. You will design fantastic robot costumes to wear and make awesome sculptures using recycled and handmade materials. Each camper will assemble a simple, mobile tin can robot. Do mermaids exist? They can in our camp! You will create fantasy aquariums; make large, papier-mâché starfish and shark pillows. Campers will shape clay to create fun fish mobiles and use shells and colorful tile to make mosaic wall pieces. Introduction to Digital Photography (11 14 years) You will discover professional shooting techniques and learn expert Photoshop tools in this immersive course while exploring historic Newport. Working with the instructor you will learn how to consistently produce superior-quality images. NEW! 14 SUMMER CAMPS 2014 CLASSES AUGUST CAMPS Digital Discoverers (6 9 years) Young photographers, you will use walking field trips, basic camera instruction, and some time in the imac digital studio to look at the world from a different and creative point of view. If your Newport Art Museum membership is current, we have already created a username and password to get you started. Student cancellation must be at least 5 business days prior to a class start date for a tuition refund, less a $25 service fee.
